Excess protein liver function

Common Questions and Answers about Excess protein liver function

protein

Avatar n tn Hence you will need to get heart function assessed by ECHO and EKG, get kidney and liver function tests done and get a complete blood picture for anemia. Low sodium in blood, hypothyroidism and malabsorption syndromes (possible as you have green stools) causing low protein in blood have to be looked into. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper investigations and referral. Take care!
Avatar m tn does excess protein intake (like eating excess tuna fish) increase liver enzymes ast and alt?
Avatar n tn t drink during the week for the last 15 years approx just on the weekends but I do drink to excess then. I have recently had 3 series of liver tests Dec 23/08 ALT 104/ AST 57 / ALP 40 / Bili 13 Jan 23/09 ALT 250/ AST 156 / / Bili 14 Feb 26/09 ALT 216/ AST 131 / ALP 53/ Bili Direct <2 /Ferritan 632 / TIBC 74 / Iron 22 GGT 101 Just wondering what all this means.
2073790 tn?1335305414 I understand that ALT/AST can be indicators of liver function and there is a lot of information about what those results are about. I was wondering about the significance of ALP(alkaline phosphatase) I have done some research but have not found much information. My ALP was low prior to treatment and normalized during treatment, now two months post treatment it has dropped back down to below normal.
Avatar n tn s protein levels are very low as confirmed by blood albumin tests prior to her discharge from hospital. Her renal function was normal as was her liver function. Lasix has had little effect. Her nutritional status was poor going into surgery and after 8 days without food her albumin was very low. She is slowly 'restarting' her bowel function and eating some food daily. We see her Oncologist Mon. Morning (11/29).
Avatar f tn Friends have lost 30-60 pounds when this happens. End-stage liver disease patients need to have protein to maintain as much muscle as possible.
Avatar m tn It all started back in August 2006 where I was in my town shopping when I collapsed with a sudden chronic feeling of nausea, this stayed for many weeks. I of course visited my Doctor who did a liver function test which came back abnormal and I got told I have Gilberts syndrome, which I understand is harmless. With this life draining nausea I have severe abdominal pain in my upper abdomen around my liver, which I can only describe as a feeling like I am being stabbed.
Avatar m tn If there were Fatty liver changes it can be due to alcoholism when it is called Alcoholic fatty liver disease. If you do not have symptoms of liver disease like jaundice, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and fever, I would advise you to wait for now and repeat the test after four weeks to see how the levels are progressing. In the meantime you could follow certain precautions. Avoid smoking and alcohol. Avoid drugs like paracetamol and sedatives. Get vaccinated for hepatitis A & B.
Avatar m tn Albumin and total protein. Levels of albumin — a protein made by the liver — and total protein show how well your liver is making proteins that your body needs to fight infections and perform other functions. Lower than normal levels may indicate liver damage or disease. Bilirubin. Bilirubin results from the breakdown of red blood cells. Normally, bilirubin passes through the liver and is excreted in your stool.
Avatar f tn There is a great website called liver doctor by Dr Sandra Cabot which goes into great detail on how to help improve liver function. I can personally recommend milk thistle.
Avatar f tn The trouble is that a damaged liver cannot process as much healthy liver. And, when a damaged liver gets unduly overloaded with protein, encephalopathy ( a state of mental confusion that can lead to coma) may occur. Finally, diets high in protein have been demonstrated to enhance the activity of the cytochrome P450 enzyme system, which is responsible for drug metabolism.
Avatar f tn the current recommended daily intake of protein is 46 grams for women aged 19–70 Any excess protein consumed is turned into energy by the body, and it is controversial whether this excess protein causes a strain on the liver. A deficiency in protein leads to muscle atrophy, and impaired functioning of the human body in general. low sodium Parmesan cheese provides the most protein with 41.
Avatar m tn Personally I like to see low enzymes but they do not reflect the overall function of the liver. Tests that can more accurately reflect liver function are prothrombin time (clotting time), platelet count, albumin, bilirubin and some others that I am forgetting right now.
468408 tn?1208433009 Being an amino acid, the main problem with excess would be the same as the over ingestion of any protein (amino acids are the end result of the metabolism of protein, it's how your body absorbs protein).
Avatar f tn subutex and liver function tests. do you need this. i have read it on several sites and research i have done.
1527017 tn?1291671470 This is what I know about protein urine testing. Urine protein testing is used to help evaluate and monitor kidney function, and to help detect and diagnose early kidney damage and disease. If the level is high, the doctor may order a secondary test to determine which proteins are being excreted and in what quantities. Greater than 1200 appears high. However, rereading your post I am unsure if you are mixing the tests urine protein against urine keytones?
Avatar m tn Hence if both ankles are swelling then you will need to get heart function assessed by ECHO and EKG, get kidney and liver function tests done and get a complete blood picture for anemia. Low sodium in blood, hypothyroidism and malabsorption syndromes causing low protein in blood have to be looked into. I think you should discuss these possibilities with your doctor. It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining.
Avatar m tn The diagnosis of hepatic encephalopathy requires the presence of impaired liver function and the exclusion of an alternative explanation for the symptoms. Blood tests (ammonia levels) may assist in the diagnosis. Attacks are often precipitated by an intercurrent problem, such as infection or constipation. Signs and symptoms The mildest form of hepatic encephalopathy is difficult to detect clinically, but may be demonstrated on neuropsychological testing.
873823 tn?1240072948 Studies have shown little or no difference in encephalopathy between patients on a protein restricted diet and those without protein restriction. The worry some doctors have with protein restricted diets is that muscle wasting could occur due to protein deficiency. Some doctors recommend that protein should come from plant sources because it is easier to digest and absorb than is animal protein.
Avatar f tn HI ZJ Yes our livers can heal. they are very remarkable.. although when you are diagnosed with liver disease there are 4 stages.. you can maintain by healthy eating no alcohol and such.. just taking good care of yourself.. peps have been known to donate parts of their liver to another.. amazing organ..
Avatar n tn Protein, and particularly meat protein produces ammonia in the colon; and while a healthy liver can manage this, a cirrhotic liver is often incapable of removing it. This results in ‘brain fog’, or hepatic encephalopathy. It can often be effectively managed with the drug ‘Lactulose’; a laxative that encourages frequent bowel movements.
Avatar m tn I would recommend to keep working out as that’s great for overall health but to stop taking the supplementary protein as all that excess protein puts your liver under stress having to process it especially with hep b it could be damaging in the long term.
