The Evista is suposed to help with osteoporosis as well as cut my chances of ibc in half. Since I am prone to hot flashes, doc prescribed Effexor, an anti-deppresant known to combat hot flashes to take along with the Evista. I hate the idea of taking a med to offset SE's caused by another med. I was hoping that my flashes would be gone by now so that I wouldn't get a double whammy of them when I started the Evista. But I think valuable time is going by.

Hair loss in a known but not highly common side effect of Evista. If you do a search: "Evista and hair loss" you will find numerous references to this side effect.

When a doctor on ABC national news suggested that women stop taking it after 5 years, I made an appointment with my doctor to discuss stopping this med. My doctor agreed, but now suggests that I take Evista. I researched Evista online and found that it is linked to increased risk of ovarian cancer and stroke, in addition to other nasty symptoms I have never experienced (including hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia). I am afraid to take this drug, too, and don't know what to do.
Doctor gave me an antibiotic but again next week it recurs. Body aches mostly knees and ankles [ i suffer through osteoporosis and joint pains too but the pains were not troublesome earlier] Can anyone tell is it viral or anything else.
I do not think that any drug, medication can cause the cancer to come back....but, if the cells are there, I believe, and just my personal observation, that estrogen can cause the cells to grow. It happened to me and a few others on this forum would probably feel the same that I do, that taking HRT caused the cancer cells, or masses, or cysts to grow faster than they would have otherwise.
to be tollerable. Now I start Evista for lcis and osteoporosis. That is supposed to cause flashes. My doc says Effexor and Clonidine will help flashes. I do not want to take Effexor, and Clonidine may lower my blood pressure too much since I am already on two blood pressure meds. I will try the Evista and if get flashes again, I may just stop. I read magnesium helps, so I tried. It did help quite a bit, but unfortunately, if you take enough, you get diarrhea. Some choice.
Either estrogen replacement or Evista are good choices in prevention and progression of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Evista may also protect against uterine and breast cancer. If you don't have true osteoporosis, and you are headed in that direction (osteopenia), then estrogen (or Evista) therapy is more appropriate for prevention, than the addition of Fosamax. At the point of osteopenia, Fosamax may be used at reduced doses for prevention of the progression to osteoporosis.
I am a 59 year old female.The reading on my bone density test is minus 4.1 for my spine and minus 2.6 for my legs and hip. However, my doctor isn't prescribing any medication for me but tells me to continue taking calcium supplement and Vitamin D and come back in a year to do another test. Since I am obviously having osteoporosis, shouldn't I be taking any prescription drug? I am worried sick over the reading and need some expert opinion to go back and talk to my doctor again.
I am currently on 2 osteoporosis medicines (Evista and Fosomax) in attempts to stop the microfractures from occuring. After a few months of taking these, I did improve. However, my hips and back recently started bothering me again, in the form of spasms. I cannot get another MRI for a few more weeks. I take Naproxin 2x's/day and muscle relaxers 1-2 times/day. Acupuncture gives me great short term relief, but the spasms are back the next day.
Has anyone heard of taking Tamoxifen or Evista as a possible step in breast cancer prevention? My doctor has suggested it because I'm in a high risk category. I'm not sure what to do.
he said I am cancer free right now, but a high risk of getting breast cancer so he is recommending this medication Evista. He said Evista was better then the tomoxafin because it causes less blood clots. Is this true? I haven't started any meds yet, since IM going to get a second opinon first to see what is the best course of medication for me to take.Of course there are side effects now what medication doesn't have any side effects right.
My doctor told me that I have Osteoporosis and wants me to try Forteo an injection for two years. Has anyone tried this drug and what were your side effects, if any. I don't want to make my stomach problems worse than there already are.
However, you may also want to ask your oncologist about taking an osteoporosis drug. I am currently in a phase 3 drug study which is checking the protective effects of osteoporosis drugs to help keep breast cancer from recurring as bone cancer. Early results seem to be very promising. At the very least, taking an osteoporosis drug will treat your osteoporosis. If there is an added benefit - even better! Thinking of you.
I just had my frist Bone scan and the office called me and said I had osteoporosis and that they called in RX for Atelvia..
I picked up the RX and was reading the information and I am concerned about the side effect of this medication.
Is this the only way to help with osteoporosis? Is there anything elso another way?
I am currently on Copaxone, Depakote, Neurontin, for the MS; Evista for osteoporosis, Tenormin, (as a beta blocker),for Migrane headache, Cinestin - an estrogen replacement (I had a complete Hysterectomy in 1991), Vesicare and Oxytrol for my neurogenic bladder and Tylenol with codine for acute pain. I recently had blood work and my WBC was slightly elevated at 11, RBC, Hemoglobin, and Hematocrit were slightly low and my lymphocytes were above 5000, (high normal is 3900).
Has anyone been treated for osteoporosis with intravenous medication rather than orally? I have a very sensitive stomach and am afraid the oral medications may get me sick,so I am considering the intravenous therapy.
Are there side effects ot the intravenous therapy?

I am a breast cancer patient in a drug study taking the osteoporosis drug, Zometa. There is some promising data that suggests osteoporosis drugs may help prevent breast cancer patients having recurrances of cancer as bone cancer.

My blood pressure at the bloodmobile yesterday was 102/70. The only meds I take are Evista to prevent osteoporosis and Topamax for neuropathy from the chemo (it's helped greatly, I can walk barefoot again). Because I work nights I occasionally take a quarter of an Ambien to get to sleep to put myself back on a "normal" sleep pattern. Don't drink coffee or tea. Since it started,I always feel this when laying down, sitting up only when I am very tired.
Not everyone will experience these to a degree that would be sufficient to stop the drug. Have a serious discussion with your Oncologist and weigh the benefits against the side effects and risks. You may not have much of a problem at all but you would have to try them to know this for sure. Kindest regards ....
I believe this drug is widely used in India but not in the U.S.
There are several drugs available in the U.S. for the treatment of Osteoporosis and all have some value. One with a similar name (Boniva) is used quite often and is said to have good results.
Each SAT occurance, my iodine uptake was initially zero and TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies negative. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis 2 years ago with Dexascan results having Z-scores slightly below -2.5.
