Common Questions and Answers about Estrogen side effects progestin

Avatar f tn If you were my patient, I would be tempted to give you 14 days of progesterone (Prometrium seems to have fewer side effects) and then repeat the ultrasound before doing a biopsy. If you wanted to continue Vagifem, I would consider scanning again in 3 months to see if the lining was building up again. If so, you could stop the medication, or consider a small daily dose of progesterone. Hope this helps!
Avatar f tn Although not a common side effect, the hormones in the pills (either progestin alone or progestin combined with estrogen) can cause some women to bleed at unexpected times. If that is the cause of your bleeding, it is not dangerous and you should expect it to go away by itself after you get your next period. You should know, however, that your unusual bleeding could be caused by something else that, in rare cases, may be more serious.
Avatar f tn Side Effects What if I bleed after taking emergency contraceptive pills? Most of the time, there is no reason to worry if you bleed after taking emergency contraceptive pills (also called "morning after pills" or "day after pills"). Although not a common side effect, the hormones in the pills (either progestin alone or progestin combined with estrogen) can cause some women to bleed at unexpected times.
Avatar n tn s disease, colon cancer, macular degeneration, urinary incontinence and skin aging. However, HRT has many short-term and long-term side effects. But sometimes, changing the dosage or the way it is administered can help control side effects. It is important to weigh all of the potential benefits and risks, as well as your preferences and needs before beginning HRT with your doctor. Women who take HRT should be closely monitored.
Avatar f tn s Health Initiative showed that combined HRT as Prempro (conjugated estrogen plus progestin formulation medroxyprogesterone acetate) increased the risk of breast cancer. Estrogen taken without a progestin (Premarin) did not increase risk of breast cancer. But you are correct that a progestin or progesterone needs to be taken with estrogen to protect the uterine lining from proliferation and risk of hyperplasia or cancer.
Avatar m tn Endometriosis feed off estrogen. The estrogen-dependent endo lesions, if left unchecked, will begin to create their own estrogen. I do want to clarify that the pill or any other form of HRT does not prevent the Endometriosis from growing. The reason it is used is to help stop the pain by stopping the periods. I was on a low dose BCP (Marvelon) for 8 yrs continuously and did help with my pain. However it still continued to grow even after deep excision surgery.
1353681 tn?1387083733 Started norethindrone recently; it is not estrogen, but rather a form of progestin... but is also partially used as birth control and for endometriosis.. It is a chalky pill, and I let it sit in my mouth to get it just right so it doesn't hit my throat.. but I notice it dissolves most of the way in my mouth before I swallow.. is it ok to just dissolve it for a couple mins in water before taking it.. I'd assume it is the same thing as it dissolving in my mouth.. ?
Avatar n tn Most info I find on side effects involves HRT with estrogen and progesterone. What are the risks of blood clot or heart attack with just progesterone? Has anyone else had a similar experience/treatment? Thank you.
561921 tn?1216605621 This change causes early menopause and increased osteoporosis risk When taking hormone therapy after an oophorectomy it is important to take estrogen plus progestin (hormone replacement therapy). The progestin protects the uterus from the increased risk of estrogen-related endometrial cancer. You can read more about this through this link: http://www.healthgrades.com/kbase/dp/topic/tn9713/dp.htm Take care an regards.
Avatar n tn The doctor will start you on a basic birth control, probably combination estrogen / progestin, bare in mind there are different concentrations which can lead to different benefits/ side effects or they might not work as indicated at first. Doctors usually recommend 3 month trial before switching.
Avatar f tn 5% of women using combined OCs with 30 μg of estrogen, regardless of the progestin content. Breakthrough bleeding also depended on other factors like dose, potency, and activity of the particular progestin in the combined OC as well as the ratio of the estrogen and progestin in the formulation and other factors like missed pills and smoking.
Avatar m tn I asked her if I needed to take any hormone therapy like progesterone, she said no she does not like putting her patients on hormones due to the side effects only if absolutely necessary. so basically she just wants me to see what happens with my periods. I did get a full period three days after the biopsy which was good but who knows when I will get another one.
Avatar n tn A 19% decrease in endometrial cancer rates A 58% increase in ovarian cancer rates Thus, women taking E+P have a risk of endometrial cancer that is similar to or slightly less than women taking placebo. Progestin appears to cancel the harmful effect of estrogen in the uterus, as previous studies showed. However, E+P does not completely prevent endometrial cancer, so the bleeding problems that women often have with this therapy must still be monitored.
Avatar f tn Just like you, I would often experience the nausea at odd times when I took the oral hormones - estrogen, and progestin. Right now I have a post in about the side effects for me of taking proton pump inhibitors for GERD and how they cause me so many side effects. I have been off Prilosec for one day, and my stomach is somewhat better, and I feel better in general. But when the heartburn and pain comes back, I will try to manage with Tums and antacids. Always, always look at your meds.
Avatar n tn If your body was making insufficient amounts of estrogen, but is introduced to estrogen and progestin (synthetic progesterone), it is completely normal for your libido to be increased while on birth control. Congratulations, you now get to experience the hormonal changes many people experienced in high school. While on birth control (with sufficient amounts of progesterone and estrogen in your body) you will notice a significant change in libido at a specific time during your monthly cycle.
Avatar f tn Visanne is a progestin medication. It's my understanding that these medications may help reduce or prevent cysts but I don't think it works for all women or all cases. The use of progestin only contraceptives does seem to be used quite a bit for endometriosis (endo) as it can counteract the estrogen that feeds the endo lesions.
Avatar f tn If you are breastfeeding then you should do the progestin only pill as the pill with the combo of estrogen and progestin has been shown to affect milk supply. It's called the mini pill. It's slightly less effective so you have to make sure that you don't miss any doses, as it will increase your chances of another pregnancy. They also have a progestin implant that is quite effective as well, and then you don't have to worry about if you miss a pill.
Avatar f tn Im planning on using progestin only birth control. If you plan to breastfeed you should avoid any birth control that has estrogen because it dries up milk production. I personally plan to take the progestin only pill my dr did say there are some other option too. You should talk to your dr to see what they offer/recommend.
Avatar f tn Have you started on a progestin-related hormonal therapy? Endo shrinks with progestin and grows with estrogen. Combination pills won't help most women with endo but may help with PCOS. There are hormonal tests that could help you identify if you have "estrogen predominance." Truly, you should see a specialist if your periods are that painful. Pain is NOT normal and you should see a specialist to get a treatment plan that helps you either way.
Avatar f tn Some of the most common products are known as hormonal contraceptives (they contain estrogen and/or progestin). Hormonal contraceptives prevent pregnancy by preventing ovulation.
Avatar f tn Micronor (noretindrone) is a Progestin-only birth control medication. One of the primary side-effects of progestin-only oral contraceptives is irregular menstrual bleeding. This can be spotting or breakthrough bleeding, shortened cycles, or amenorrhea. Amenorrhea is the absence of menstruation (one or more missed periods). This is a normal occurrence for some women taking birth control pills.
Avatar f tn Hello, I was just reading about an older dog having a problem with urinary incontinence and the treatment she was given, particularly the possible side effects. My White Bearded Collie (13 years old) started being incontinent last year and my vet has prescribed INCURIN 1mg daily. This has been mostly effective (just the odd occurrence when she was asleep or distressed). I was just concerned that it may have some serious side effects such as those mentioned for the other treatment (PPA).
Avatar f tn There are many hormone options from contraceptives to hormone "replacement." Since estrogen feeds endo, it is thought that a progestin or progesterone should be taken along with any estrogen to attempt to keep the endo from growing.
Avatar f tn Hello - I'm in the same boat just a bit older than you! Left overay had three cysts and endometriosis. Surgery - cysts came back again this year - had a lot of endometriosis this time - the endometriosis wrapped and attached my ovary to the "wall" so that was causing the pulling and pain along with the cysts. With that said - has the doc spoken about being on the pill? The pill may help delay the growth and return of these issues a bit.
