Then, too, there is also submissive urination which can give the appearance of incontinence if the dog has an especially submissive personality. How old was she when she first started leaking? Does she have a submissive personality?
Avatar m tn re basically losing the ability to make estrogen, which is needed for muscle development. If you deprive them of that estrogen too early in their life, they lose muscle tone, or don't develop enough muscle tone, in their bladder, and subsequently, leak all over the place. **** (*What the internet says: Urinary incontinence may be caused by an underdeveloped urinary system or may arise as a part of the aging process.
Avatar n tn Our dog was the same age, she would wet herself when she was sleeping. The vet put her on Stilbesterol, I think its some type of an estrogen medication. It worked while we had her on it, I don't know if they have to stay on it for good, or its just temporary.
Avatar f tn Completely different medications are needed to treat urinary incontinence such as estrogen supplements or products like Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) which is also labelled as Proin.
Avatar n tn Are you sure that your dog is just peeing or are you finding wet spots? It can likely be estrogen. That is the issue with our female spayed lab and have seen it in many other breeds. Urinary incontinence is a common disorder of older female dogs, as many as 20% of neutered ******* develop it at some point in their lives. The reason is usually urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (USMI).
Avatar m tn In a study of 226 spayed female dogs, a greater percentage of dogs treated with Incurin improved compared to dogs treated with placebo. Incurin was shown to be effective for the control of estrogen-responsive urinary incontinence in spayed female dogs 1 year and older." Hope this is helpful.
Avatar f tn Hello, I was just reading about an older dog having a problem with urinary incontinence and the treatment she was given, particularly the possible side effects. My White Bearded Collie (13 years old) started being incontinent last year and my vet has prescribed INCURIN 1mg daily. This has been mostly effective (just the odd occurrence when she was asleep or distressed). I was just concerned that it may have some serious side effects such as those mentioned for the other treatment (PPA).
Avatar n tn however, at that age also consider urinary incontinence due to decreasing estrogen levels. after ruling out bladder infection/ stones/ metabolic problems your vet may want to try estrogen supplement the arthritis can be eased with new non-steroidal meds from your vet. reduce her weight and try some physical therapy on the affected joints.
1951021 tn?1324580615 I give my dog the Glucosamine and Chondrotin, maximum dosage for her weight. It has worked a treat with her! Mine has an old leg injury (her leg was broken once) which had just started giving some arthritic symptoms a couple of years ago now. But since the Glucosamine and Chondroitin she's been doing fine! I like your inventiveness with the Diapers! If it does the trick -that's what counts!
Avatar n tn 5 years old beautiful and full of joy English Setter Mia from the Rescue Shelter. After having her for a few days, we discovered that she has urine incontinence and often leaking while resting or sleeping. She is also unreasonably consuming allot of water, just like she has run for a long time.
Avatar m tn what would cause a dog to consistently lose weight even though it is eating constantly, the dog has started to lose vision in both eyes (cloudy appearance to corneas) and has had problems with incontinence. The dog was recently on prednisone but was taken off due to incontinence issue. Please help.
Avatar f tn Thank you for the information. If it's mites or mange, wouldn't my other dog have contracted it by now? This dog has had this problem with increasing severity for a couple of year now and my other dog does not show any signs. My vet told me it was related to her allergies, but I will discuss further testing with them.
Avatar m tn In the meantime, put a urine pad under her to sleep on...It will absorb the moisture and keep it from burning her skin...
Avatar f tn Thanks for the input. I'm glad to know that others have had the same sort of problem. But what I need help with now is how to remedy the situation...it's been a couple of months since the kennel stay and he still does the urinating now and then at the same time of day. We are keeping a close eye on him and I have closed off the room he seems to prefer for his habit. Have you any answers for me?
Avatar m tn He was satisfied with his work and sent the dog home with us again the next day. however the dog is no better he is constantly wet and has not appetite or energy. i have no idea what to do now as he smells horrible and is so out of character. its really upsetting and the vet doesn't seem to know what to do with him.I have read a lot about dogs wetting themselves after being neutered as a result of a lack of testosterone being produced. could this possibly be the issue?
Avatar f tn Hot flashes and night sweats Irritability, mood swings and depression Loss of libido and energy Trouble sleeping Urinary incontinence Vaginal dryness Weight gain (especially in the abdomen, hips and thighs) I am 54 and was thrown into surgical menopause 20 years ago. I used synthetic estrogen for 16 years. I tried to get off of it and wow did I get hit hard with menopause symptoms. So now I've been on bioidentical hormones for the last 4+ years.
1149072 tn?1269769247 I have a 9 year old dog on Proin for spay incontinence and it has helped tremendously. She would wet her bed often at night, and then started leaking on the sofa or even on my lap while I was petting her. She has also had a few uti's but normally that causes her to go more often. However, my 13yr old Pumpkin will tend to hold it more when she gets a uti.
Avatar f tn First off, please don't tell me to see a doctor. I can't right now. I want to treat with vitamins and herbs anyway. I'm pretty sure I'm either estrogen dominant or deficient, but I can't be sure which. It seems that I have most of the symptoms for both, and not just the ones they have in common. I'm obviously leaning toward dominant because it's much more likely being 27 years old.
Avatar f tn Incontinence is normal for a 15 yr old dog, there is a med they can give him that will help...
131114 tn?1380083190 t seem to hold his bladder- he will lay for hours licking his penis due to the dribble. i feel so bad for him. he is still frisky and eating, but dribble dribble dribble. anybody have any suggestions as to age related, or what? just had his kidneys ckd and that's ok for now. thanks and ralph thanks you!
Avatar n tn Try cleaning the are good and put lots of vaseline in that area to barrier the skin from the urine. It's hard when they reach that age and then can't even help themselves go potty. Poor thing! Try making a sling out of a towel, place it under the dogs hind end, waist area and you can help him or her get up. If your dog can't make it up at all I'd get to the vet and discuss quality of life issues.
Avatar f tn My dog is on Proin for incontinence. It's working very well. I know there are other meds for this as well. Check with your vet. It isn't that expensive and has made a huge difference in our quality of life (and quantity of laundry!
Avatar n tn Is this a common occurrence for a dog of her age? I DO have to help her get up and down the steps for her to go to the bathroom, but other than that, she walks on her own. I thought about getting those "puppy pads", but after reading the back of the package, it states that there is something in the pad to "encourage" the animal to go on the pad. I don't want her to get "lazy" and just go inside because the pad is there. What do you suggest? Also...
Avatar m tn She is having incontinence problems with her bladder then, not bowel problems. Is your dog spayed? It is not uncommon for spayed females to have incontinence issyes. Let your vet know about this and they can prescribe medication for her that will stop the problem.
Avatar n tn I had some estrogen deficiency symptoms for quite a few months. If your estrogen deficiency symptoms are really bad, you could consider taking phytoestrogen supplements such as Soy, Black Cohosh, Ginseng, Red Clover or **** Quai.
