Avatar m tn It is often associated with the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Sun exposure is also a strong risk factor for melasma. It is particularly common in tropical climates. Creams containing tretinoin, kojic acid, and azelaic acid have been shown to improve the appearance of melasma. Chemical peels or topical steroid creams may sometimes recommended. Melasma often fades over several months. Take care and keep us posted.
890192 tn?1241184417 I have had it evaluated by a dermatologist and used the prescribed Tri-Luma, and it has never gotten any better. Am I ingesting something (i.e. cola, foods) that could be causing its persistance?
Avatar f tn It's called melasma or also "pregnancy mask" and is thought to be caused by the elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone in pregnancy. The elevated hormone levels stimulate the melanin in our skin (which gives our skin its pigmentation) and causes dark patches. They get better after baby is born and hormones go back to normal. It's very common in pregnancy.
Avatar f tn I had things like the mask of pregnancy when not pregnant which has a real name of melasma, very long cycles where I had infrequent periods, infertility due to too much estrogen (I was like my own walking birth control pill), etc. My hormones evened out on their own. A simple blood test will tell your doctor your hormone levels. Progesterone excess is well known for someone bleeding frequently or spotting often. Let us know what the results are.
Avatar f tn It's totally normal. :) It's called hyper pigmentation. The most common sights are the inner thighs, middle of the belly and armpits. It's caused by the increase in estrogen. Sunlight can make it worse so, careful with the tank tops. Since you have noticed it under your arms,be prepared to see it on your face too. Then it's called melasma. Neither is permanent. It usually clears up on its own after delivery.
9523089 tn?1414211966 It went away completely and would have without the Renova as it is often a reaction to too much estrogen in the system. I got dermablend cover up that comes in a little pot and put it on the spots that had the dark covering. It worked pretty well. Not the greatest thing in the world but better than the mask of pregnancy showing. Again, mine went completely away so was a temporary pregnancy thing.
Avatar m tn TSH is using the old range and you are hypothyroid IMHO... My doc likes the t3 and t4 in the upper areas of the range so you are trending low. What time was the cortisol test? If not 8am fasting, it was not useful... And you don't have complete loops (cortisol and ACTH, estrogen and LH,FSH, DHEA-s, bioavailable testosterone, GH and IGF-1 etc). Plus sodium and potassium and renin and aldosterone are needed to know if you have low cortisol followed with a stim test.
Avatar f tn This hormone related and usually too much estrogen.

Avatar m tn For the melasma, treatment options include treatment with vitamin C and hydrocortisone, peel with carbon dioxide snow and alexandrite and ND-Yag Q-Switched laser treatment preceded by a hydroquinone-based application. But get it done after the course of Accutane. Please discuss these options with your dermatologist. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
Avatar f tn Hi, 'Laser treatment for melasma - A Wood's lamp test should be used to determine whether the melasma is epidermal or dermal. If the melasma is dermal, laser (or "IPL") will acually DARKEN and worsen the appearance of the spots. Dermal melasma is generally unresponsive to most treaments, and has only been found to lighten with products containing mandelic acid. In all treatments for melasma the effects are gradual and a strict avoidance of sunlight is required.
Avatar f tn I have had melasma and now have vitiligo. Around 2002-2003 I was on Paxil and I developed hot flashes and melasma. I was given a prescription bleaching creme Benoquin which removed most of the melasma but I have a couple of stubborn spots that won't go away with the creme or tri-luma. I have tried using retinol products faithfully and although my skin is soft the spots are there. Oddly enough as the melasma started to improve the vitiligo kicked in. I don't know if there is a connection.

Avatar n tn Other medications, such as anti-seizure medications, may also cause melasma. The condition is usually seen in the 2nd and 3rd decade of life. The rash is usually symmetrical and present on the cheeks, lips (including upper lips), nose or the forehead. Sun exposure is strongly associated with melasma. However, the best treatment for melasma is prevention. One should avoid the sun and use daily sunscreen.
Avatar n tn As it was little wheatbrownish colour that time . Now facial skin and arms skin have tanned and looks quite black . Can i regain earlier skin back or more fairer skin than that ? Plzz.. someone reply soon ...

Avatar f tn I was already producing two much estrogen and had issues like melasma (the butterfly pigment thing on my face) so more hormones would have been a bad route for me. I also had the slow thyroid. I had a little bit of depression which often goes hand in hand with thyroid issues and DID treat that and while waiting to see an endocrinologist to figure out the plan for my thyroid and hormonal imbalance, it righted itself. (feel lucky!).
Avatar m tn Hello, I am a 37 year-old male currently suffering from mild-moderate melasma and have been advised by my doctor to avoid UV/sun exposure. The melasma is localized mainly to my forehead and right cheekbone. I currently use a Kojic-Acid based treatment 2x a day, and Retin-A 2x a week. I am interested in using the a Hair Regrowth System to combat male pattern baldness.

5994222 tn?1378018692 I earlier thought it to be tan and use fairness creams. Then I found from net it could be melasma and used melacare forte for a month. It lighten the spots for some time but became even darker when stopped using. You can check on my profile photo. These spots are not 3-4 year old and increasing. Kindly advise.
Avatar f tn Hi, I have a dark spot on my cheek which I have probably had for at least a couple of years. Recently I have noticed that my entire face seems to be developing melasma (previously diagnosed in only one spot on my forehead). I now have become obsessed with one spot on my cheek, larger and darker than the rest, mainly because it has one tiny pinhead-sized 'mole' that I can feel when I put sunscreen on it. I have an appointment with the dermatologist at the end of next month.
