Avatar f tn Hi, welcome to the forum, Epipen delivers a measured dose of epinephrine (also known as adrenaline) using autoinjector technology, most frequently for the treatment of acute allergic reactions to avoid or treat the onset of anaphylactic shock. In certain cases it can be used to stop local bleeding. Epinephrine is known to act on the uterus through beta 2 receptors and can cause relaxation of the uterus. At term, it can prevent the contraction and delay the labor.

In certain cases it can be used to stop local bleeding. Alternatively, the same drug can be given by the local health care provider or you need to go to emergency department. Adrenaline is life saving drug in this case and there is no other better alternative exists.
Avatar m tn I’m also allergic to green onions and chives! I’ve been wondering if there’s anyone else out there like me. I’m not bothered by any other foods in that same food family, but the spring/green onions and chives cause my tongue to swell, turn red, and become very sore as well as make my throat hurt and make swallowing difficult. I’m considering carrying an epipen, but since nothing else like onions, leeks, or garlic bothers me I’m unsure.
Avatar f tn a whole body reaction like that sounds a lot like a food allergy. and your reactions sound pretty serious. just as a warning, these type of allergies can cause more severe reactions the more you are exposed, so next time it happens it could be much worse. I would go to a doctor and get an epipen (spelling?). hopefully you will never need it, but it might save your life.
Avatar n tn I have some serious allergies and often they close my throat. I live 20 minutes from the nearest doctor or hospital. Until recently I always felt safe because I could use an epipen and that would give me time to get help. But now I have been diagnosed with about 8000 PVCs a day, and was told by another sufferer that I shouldn't use an epipen anymore, that it's not a good idea for those with PVCs.
453255 tn?1205792176 I have anaphylaxis and severe asthma, and I have several known anaphylactic triggers, (such as all treenuts, certain types of pollen, and raw fruit - especially apples) - but my new allergist I recently met with explained to me the reason I am allergic to raw fruit such as apples, peaches, pairs plumbs is because of a condition called "Oral Allergy Syndrome" where my tongue recognizes the fruit as pollen in its raw state.
Avatar n tn On exposure to the allergen, an Immunologic (IgE) or a non-immunologic reaction is set in process, which ultimately releases histamine, which acts at the peripheral receptors, resulting in allergic reactions. This can range from common hay fever to hives to asthma or anaphylactic reactions. Of these the anaphylactic reactions are the most severe forms and the symptoms can include breathlessness with stridor and with dropping of blood pressure resulting in loss of consciousness.
Avatar f tn Are allergic reactions to stings regional? If we return to the US will our son not be allergic to the wasp venom there?
Avatar n tn Here is a brief history/timeline of the "allergic reactions" I've had. Prior to this I have not had allergic reactions before. Also I live in Mexico and, so far, the doctors have been of no help. January 2012 - while vacationing at the beach had a big lump appear on the bottoms of each foot. It was hard, painful and itchy. At the time I was taking 2 anti-biotics for a bladder infection. I didn't not pay any attention to food or anything I consumed.
Avatar m tn Its not common to develop anaphylactic reactions suddenly to commonly eaten food, but it can happen. Also, if there is no past history of allergic reactions to food, its less common or less likely to happen. The chances are less. Any further questions will be glad to answer. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn The past 18 months I have had 5 allergic reactions while eating or immediately following. I was skin tested by an allergist with benign findings. The meals consisted of pancakes/bacon, sausage gravy and biscuits, and steel cut oatmeal. The symptoms are itchy skin which spreads from neck to face and the remainder of the body (feels like heat swarming my legs and arms). My lips may or may not itch and my throat may start to swell.
Avatar f tn I do know that if a person is allergic to certain foods, they will also have reactions to certain drugs. For instance, if allergic to shell fish, a person can possibly be allergic to the contract dye.
Avatar f tn I have noticed a garlic smell on my hands in the last few weeks, I take levothyroxin for thyroid condition, the only medication I take. I recently am having allergic reactions to food. My dr. has prescribed a epipen to use in case of emergency, since I had a bad reaction to something which we haven't pinpointed as of yet about 10 days ago. I am beside myself trying to figure out what I am allergic to and why I'm suffering from so many different reactions to my system.
Avatar f tn I suffer allergic reactions to blood pressure medications. Over a long period I have tried a huge number of different BP meds, and not found one that eventually didn't make me feel unwell. The most recent, Candesartan, lowered my BP in the first few days, but after that it gradually rose again to a point where my BP was way above normal levels and I was suffering severe chest pains..
1322157 tn?1279656681 A better and additional choice for those of us that have extreme allergies or a history of severe allergic reactions is to keep an Epipen on hand. Epipen's which is an Epinephrine injection is used to treat life-threatening allergic reactions. I have one on me at all times. It can be life-saving.
Avatar n tn The spectrum of these reactions can vary widely; reactions may present as typical allergic symptoms (eg, itching, urticaria, rash, and edema) after a single dose, or may manifest as severe idiosyncratic dermatologic reaction, usually after multiple doses. If drug allergy is suspected you need to discontinue the drug and report to your doctor immediately. In the future avoid further exposure to it as prevention is best.
Avatar f tn It should only be used in case of life threatening allergic reaction. Epipen is known to be associated with shaking esp. when the larger doses are taken. You should not take more than recommended dose; otherwise you may land up in complication. This is due to stimulation of the muscles. Hence, epipen should be better used under doctor's observation. If you are allergic to water following measures will help you- - Stay away from water as long as possible. - Avoid going in rain outside.
Avatar m tn In some cases, people who are allergic to wheat, beans (legumes), milk or other foods can have an allergic reaction to soy. You can confirm this by blood test to see for raised IgE levels and skin testing for soy products. I would suggest you obtain a referral to an allergist or an ENT who does allergy testing. Some allergies can be life-threatening as they can precipitate anaphylactic shock in which the swelling can be so severe that it impairs the ability to breathe.
Avatar n tn I was rushed to emergency, given benedryl and sent home 4 hours later. I got an Epipen for I was told, although rare, that I could have a secondary reaction within the next week. Sure enough November 5 I had a second reaction (bi-phasic reaction). I was given the epipen by my mother for I passed out and couldn't give it myself. Back to the hospital.
Avatar f tn Oh, my! Not knowing the icecream had walnuts in it. That's what I was talking about when I was mentioning being aware of what's in your food. From now on you will have to be even more vigilant than ever. The severity of the allergy to walnuts varies from person to person. But, I do know that allergies to walnuts is more common than I thought it was 'til I read some information about it recently.
