Epinephrine with local anesthetic

Common Questions and Answers about Epinephrine with local anesthetic

epipen

Avatar f tn The dentist prescribed Halcyon (which I took 1 hour before the appointment) saying it will relax me and make numbing easier and the non-epinephrine local anesthetic last longer. He gave me 2 shots of local on each side. Afterwards, I felt slight pain at one of the injection places, no pain anywhere else. The next day, my face was swollen, and I still had just the slight pain from one of the injections. The swelling was just of the skin of my face, not inside my mouth, not on my lips.
1305767 tn?1361192676 t bad this time because they gave me nitrous but I learned they put epinephrine in the local anesthetic shots (it has something to do with helping the anesthetic last longer) So I'm thinking the epinephrine sends my anxiety level from like a six to a ten. Last November I had a tooth pulled and while the dentist was injecting the shot my heart rate got so high I almost passed out. They put a monitor on my finger and it was about 150! That is just crazy.
Avatar f tn In local anesthetics (like those used in dentistry), it's the epinephrine that's mixed in with the anesthetic that causes the problems for most patients with dysautonomia. There are local anesthetic formulations available without epinephrine, they just last for shorter periods of time and may require higher doses for efficacy.
Avatar n tn Even a small dose of local anesthetic injected directly into an artery takes the local anesthetic directly to the brain and induces a seizure. It is specifically for that reason that there are limits to the total amount of local anesthetic used at a time. This can be altered by adding epinephrine to the lidocaine to decrease the uptake into the blood vessels (you can use a higher dose) In relation to the nitrous oxide, very unlikely to cause seizures.
Avatar f tn It's the epinephrine in the anesthetic that causes the racing heart, etc. Next time you're at the dentist and you need/want an anesthetic ask for one WITHOUT epinephrine. The medication generally takes a little longer to "kick in" and wears off faster, but your dentist will work with you for maximum comfort.
Avatar n tn There is no need to be anxious over having oral surgery with local anesthetic. It is your friend...remember that. Heck, I'd pull a tooth on a patient with no anesthesia if he or she could take it. I won't feel a thing. The anesthesia is available for the comfort of the patient. As far as the use of "caine" anesthetics, you are painting with too broad a brush.
Avatar n tn I do have a history of sinus tachycardia and palpitations, but just had a full cardiac workup in April and he said I was fine just having PACs and they were harmless. Does this anesthetic issue have something to do with heart rate possibly and is it dangerous of just uncomfortable? I also can't understand why the non epi injection caused the same issues and epinephrine. It's never happened until just recently and I've had more than my share of dental work through the years.
Avatar f tn s the epinephrine that is in the lidocaine. You can ask your dentist to use an anesthetic without epinephrine, I have had tons of dental work and always ask for that. Dentist doesn't mind at all and I've never had any problems. It doesn't last as long but if you start to feel anything while they are working the dentist will just give you more. I have done fine with it.
Avatar f tn Local anesthetics can cause seizures, I think some of the local anesthetic must have been injected inadvertently into an artery. Usually very high doses are needed to produce a seizure but if it is injected directly into an artery going into the head and neck area much smaller doses are required.
1817071 tn?1366228243 I had a tooth pulled, they used epinephrine. I was in afib with low rate for 8 days. Then afib every 2-3 day. I was given Rythmol as PIP. I gradually have had less afib, but, each one has 100 for rate...I called dr. and asked him what to do....he said I needed ablation and bp monitors were not accurate. I got a new dr. and new dr. did not say anything about the lowered rate. I go to new EP next week. I will ask him.
Avatar n tn Does a local anesthetic for eye surgery promote faster healing of the eye versus a general anesthetic? Sue 1.30.
Avatar n tn It is going to be a local anesthetic with the surgery being at 1pm. The doctor told me that the procedure lasts and about an hour. My question is can I drink alcohol that night, say around 8pm. What side effects will happen with just a local anesthetic. Thanks.
1927233 tn?1326670387 My moms doctor and anesthesiologist were fantastic, as they pulled off a very risky surgery with local anesthetic. My mom Debbie is going on 92 years old this November.

Avatar f tn Yes its ok, they will most likely need to do xrays, for that they will cover your chest and belly with a blanket, i cant remember what its called but it will protect your baby, good luck girl =)
Avatar n tn Lidocaine used as an anesthetic often has a small amount of epinephrine in the solution. The amount is so small that I have never heard of it causing tachycardia, although this is theoretically possible. Lidocaine and epinephrine is used in the suturing of millions of wounds every year with no cardiac events. My guess is that that is a coincidence here. The temporary fast heart rate in the absence of chest pain, pressure or other symptoms should have no long-lasting effects whatsoever.
Avatar f tn The numbers look dramatic, but also keep in mind that adrenaline levels are highly variable. They can increase 2-3 times just by standing up, 10-30 times with stress, 50-100 times with panic attack, and up to 1000 times with pheocromocytoma. But if you have an andrenaline sensitive arrhythmia, you should keep this in mind.
Avatar f tn Has anyone had just a local anesthetic for surgical excision removal of intraductal papilloma? I’m having 2 papillomas removed by local anesthetic was wondering if anybody has done this and how it went and what to expect. I’m having radioactive seeds put in the day before. One by ultrasound and the other with a mammogram. Had already done stereotactical biopsies and both came back benign.
Avatar f tn Thanks for the answer. I'll give some cough syrup a try. I didn't think it had anything to do with the surgery. I wasn't given gas, just 2 sedation pills and a local anesthetic. it took a little over an hour for the procedure. Could the sedation pulls also cause a sore throat?
Avatar f tn m not sure about that kind of surgery but I had my gallbladder removed and an abdominal xray under general anesthetic at 21wks, and also had a cavity filled at 18wks with local anesthetic.
Avatar m tn Also, when I go to the dentist, since I have an arrhythmia, I always ask that they use a local anesthetic (like Novocain) without Epinephrine, which is related to adrenaline. Epinephrine helps to sustain the anesthetic, but can cause heart rhythm problems. Many people probably don't realize, but Cocaine has a useful purpose in hospitals, as, you guessed it, a local anesthetic.
Avatar f tn I have to go have a tooth filled tomorrow and I'm somewhat apprehensive about the anesthetic. I know most often the ones they use contain epinephrine because it's a vasoconstricter and causes the anesthesia to work longer. I know you can request the anesthetic without the epi but then it wears off quickly (like when they are drilling on your tooth). I asked my cardiologist and he said if I didn't get a big dose of the epi, if it was mixed, with the beta blockers I should be ok.
Avatar f tn Could this operation be done under a local anesthetic or is there anything else I could do apart from having the surgery.
Avatar n tn All local anesthetic used in dentistry today are amides rather than esters. With the old ester-type locals (no longer used), cross-allergenicity did occur, so if you were allergic to one ester-type local anaesthetic, all the others were contraindicated. The good thing about the amides used nowadays is that cross-allergenicity does not occur. In other words, allergy to one amide local doesn't mean that you're allergic to other amide locals.
