I had to get stitches last night, and was given 5-6 shots of epinephrine and lidocane. I told the intake nurse I was taking synthroid (which I presume implies thyroid problems). I felt a little "unusual" afterward (pounding heart, feeling calm and detached..), and was googling the side effects of the shot.. an article said this: "Additionally, epinephrine and lidocaine usually aren’t used in patients with thyroid disease, or disease of the kidneys or liver.

My dentist who pulled my tooth charged me $85. for a consultation. I never talked with him. My consultation was with the dental nurse. She knew I had afib. We had talked about my discontinuing Pradaxa before the procedure. She said at that time, a day would be fine. I knew she was clueless. After I went into afib, I called to ask her if they used epi. She said the Lidocaine had epi in it. I said, you knew I had afib, why did you use it?

Dentist doesn't mind at all and I've never had any problems. It doesn't last as long but if you start to feel anything while they are working the dentist will just give you more. The dentist prescribed Halcyon (which I took 1 hour before the appointment) saying it will relax me and make numbing easier and the non-epinephrine local anesthetic last longer. I recently went through a similar experience with lidocaine. I had a ruptured cyst in my breast and as it had broken through one of my milk ducts it had developed an abscess. The doctor wouldn't let me leave without having a butt shot of antibiotics - she wanted fast acting because I had a high fever and my breast was the size of Mount St. Helens. When the nurse came in to inject me she made the mistake of telling me that it was antibiotic PLUS lidocaine.

Hi mady01. You may concider asking your dentist to "not" use the anesthetic with the epinephrine in it. You will be fine. In my case, the numbing shot that contains epinephrine caused me Tachycardia (racing heart rate). Later when I had to go back to the dentist, I told him this and he agreed that it can affect some people that way and he advised not to use anesthic with epinephrine on me any longer. He used something else and I was fine. Have a great day.

I really appreciate it. Will the dentist be annoyed if I ask him to use lidocaine without epinephrine? Because, doesn't this mean he will have to keep injecting me to keep me numb? I have never been allergic to preservative substances as far as i am aware. If I do not use antibiotics prior or post root canal do i put myself at risk for infection? Thanks again!

It's the epinephrine in the anesthetic that causes the racing heart, etc. Next time you're at the dentist and you need/want an anesthetic ask for one WITHOUT epinephrine. The medication generally takes a little longer to "kick in" and wears off faster, but your dentist will work with you for maximum comfort.

Novocain sometimes doesn't interact very well with other mediations. Did the dentist know of any medications you may have been taking. Also, side effects can be reduced if the dentist takes into consideration the patient's size to prevent too much of a dosage. Your doctor is correct, but the "sometimes" may be dosage related.

I cannot have epinephrine at the dentist due to severe reactions as in a racing heart, PVC's, and a rise in BP. My question: Do these drops have enough in it to maybe cause for me to have the same reaction? So far I always got eye drops without epinephrine/or something equal to epinephrine, but this last eye doctor did not want to use any drops at all.

In a simple dental procedure, I had what I can only describe as a seizure after getting what was supposed to be lidocaine and epinephrine injection. The area never got numb, and the pain from the point of the needle each time they attempted to inject me was painful. I was taken to the ER and released after 8 hours with no explanation. I researched on the web and found many warnings about pregnant women receiving Lidocaine from the dentist but not what they gave me. The Epinephrine was used to clot my blood and the Xylocaine to numb the area. I know the medical community doesn't know everything and they reassured me this medication would not reach my baby but I think they may have been wrong on this one.

This is only somewhat related to the deep concern you have for your child. I had a lidocaine (?) injection which was one of dozens over the years. One such numbing up caused me heart palpitations and my face went white. The doctor gave me oxygen to breathe while I got over it. I really can't say why that one injection caused that reaction after having so many many over the years.

While it usually affects only those with heart disease it can affect anyone and is one of the side effects listed of these antibiotics. If you are bothered by caffeine, antihistamines etc. I would avoid these antiobiotics. They are especially bad when mixed with other heart stimulating drugs. Make sure you mention this to your doctor. A good doctor will prescribe another antibiotic that has less affect on the heart if you request it.

t bad this time because they gave me nitrous but I learned they put epinephrine in the local anesthetic shots (it has something to do with helping the anesthetic last longer) So I'm thinking the epinephrine sends my anxiety level from like a six to a ten. Last November I had a tooth pulled and while the dentist was injecting the shot my heart rate got so high I almost passed out. They put a monitor on my finger and it was about 150! That is just crazy.
