Epinephrine in dental anesthetic

Common Questions and Answers about Epinephrine in dental anesthetic

epipen

Avatar f tn It's the epinephrine in the anesthetic that causes the racing heart, etc. Next time you're at the dentist and you need/want an anesthetic ask for one WITHOUT epinephrine. The medication generally takes a little longer to "kick in" and wears off faster, but your dentist will work with you for maximum comfort.
Avatar n tn For the first time in 37 years, two weeks ago when I received regular dental anesthetic my heart raced and I started having palpitations. It passed of course in a few minutes and when I went in yesterday for a root canal I asked for the anesthetic without epi. The first shot was fine, but the second injection sill caused my heart to pound hard, my chest felt shallow and made me feel a little panicy. It passed and the 3rd injection did the same.
Avatar f tn The dentist prescribed Halcyon (which I took 1 hour before the appointment) saying it will relax me and make numbing easier and the non-epinephrine local anesthetic last longer. He gave me 2 shots of local on each side. Afterwards, I felt slight pain at one of the injection places, no pain anywhere else. The next day, my face was swollen, and I still had just the slight pain from one of the injections. The swelling was just of the skin of my face, not inside my mouth, not on my lips.
Avatar f tn In local anesthetics (like those used in dentistry), it's the epinephrine that's mixed in with the anesthetic that causes the problems for most patients with dysautonomia. There are local anesthetic formulations available without epinephrine, they just last for shorter periods of time and may require higher doses for efficacy.
Avatar f tn Hi ladies I am a dental hygienist in Jersey and in our office we usually wait until the patient is past their 1st trimester..too risky for anything to happen. 2nd & 3rd ok as long as we have clearance from OBGYN...we take absolutely NO RISKS. if the patient isin massive pain we HAVE to take an xray and you will be shielded w/ a lead apron...sometimes two! Anesthetic used is also diff. Usually no epinephrine! Hope this helps!!

1305767 tn?1361192676 t bad this time because they gave me nitrous but I learned they put epinephrine in the local anesthetic shots (it has something to do with helping the anesthetic last longer) So I'm thinking the epinephrine sends my anxiety level from like a six to a ten. Last November I had a tooth pulled and while the dentist was injecting the shot my heart rate got so high I almost passed out. They put a monitor on my finger and it was about 150! That is just crazy.
Avatar f tn im training as dentist and in want to know about dental surgery in drug abusers- what problems do you anticipate
1817071 tn?1366228243 I had a tooth pulled, they used epinephrine. I was in afib with low rate for 8 days. Then afib every 2-3 day. I was given Rythmol as PIP. I gradually have had less afib, but, each one has 100 for rate...I called dr. and asked him what to do....he said I needed ablation and bp monitors were not accurate. I got a new dr. and new dr. did not say anything about the lowered rate. I go to new EP next week. I will ask him.
Avatar f tn s the epinephrine that is in the lidocaine. You can ask your dentist to use an anesthetic without epinephrine, I have had tons of dental work and always ask for that. Dentist doesn't mind at all and I've never had any problems. It doesn't last as long but if you start to feel anything while they are working the dentist will just give you more. I have done fine with it.
Avatar n tn with virtually no risk of side effects, especially cardiac ones, that would prevent you from having them administered. What it sounds like is you had a mild reaction to the epinephrine in the anesthetic previously. You can have your dentist use an anesthetic that does not contain epinephrine to rule out any possibility of these complications. For example, carbocaine 3% without epi. I use it every day on heart patients. It is perfectly safe if you are not allergic to it.
Avatar n tn I too have never heard of a lidocaine induced seizure. It is called a local anesthetic because it does just that, remains in that local area. So i don't think it numbed your daughter's brain. More likely is that there was or is some underlying predisposition for her to have a seizure and this traumatic event set off her episode. Has she ever had dental work with a local before? or was this her first cavity?
Avatar f tn Boy o boy am i going to weigh in on this one....no worries...i think the doc is right. I have had 6 root canals plus fillings, etc. and on top of that i have them numb me for the cleanings as well since i am such a baby at the dentist. I am on a beta blocker now and have been for about 3 years after my ablation was done and for a time before.
Avatar f tn In my experience, the anesthetic without epinephrine is shorter acting, but it's been plenty for me for fillings and if it wears off, they can just give you another shot, no problem. I wouldn't worry about that at all.
Avatar m tn I had a terrible experience today. In a simple dental procedure, I had what I can only describe as a seizure after getting what was supposed to be lidocaine and epinephrine injection. The area never got numb, and the pain from the point of the needle each time they attempted to inject me was painful. I was taken to the ER and released after 8 hours with no explanation. I read that lidocaine can cause a seizure. I have had injections many times with no problem. What could have gone wrong?
Avatar n tn Normally we aspirate the needle/syringe prior to injection. That's how we prevent intravascular injections of lidocaine. Otherwise it would directly travel up to the brain and can cause seizures or other symptoms such as restlessness, disorientation, etc. There are several possibilities in regards to the seizure. It may be due to an intravascular injection although from my understanding, the seizure would occur more rapidly since its goes directly to the brain quickly.
Avatar f tn It is much, much weaker than epineprhine and you would get a much, much lower dose of it than dental injection with epinephrine. Even so, I would just play it safe for regular exams and just get tropicamide which should not affect blood pressure or pulse.
Avatar f tn Its usually ok to get dental work done while pregnant. Next time though, if you remember, ask them to use anesthesia that doesn't have any epinephrine in it. Epinephrine can cause your heart rate to increase. And of course nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is definitely off limits.
Avatar f tn I work in dental you can have work done, it won't hurt the baby.
Avatar f tn Sometimes with infections, because of the acids that the bacteria makes, it can neutralize the local anesthetic. The anesthetic is a basic solution. Also, when a patient is in pain, the body releases signals that creates more sensitivity to pain and it makes the body more prone to pain. Sometimes I've used plenty of anesthetic with very little numbness for an extraction due to severe infection. This was at the hospital I was a resident in.
Avatar n tn Can I get any dental work that doesn't involve amnesia like braces or cleaning while I'm pregnant
Avatar n tn Complication after dental anesthetic injection is extremely rare. The descrbed blister may be periodontal or periapical abscess. Seeing a dentist is advised.
Avatar f tn U usually feel like that with the epinephrine in the numbing agent..it usually goes away. I'm a dental assistant so I see these kinds of things.
Avatar n tn The dentists have also made different mixtures of the anesthetic but nothing works. There are many in my family with this same condition. I have been put under to do fillings and root canals because I am terrified to sit on the chair to receive what I call "required torture". I look at others in the dental office and wish I could receive my dental treatments with no pain, I envy them. What other methods are out there that I can receive dental treatments without pain.
Avatar f tn Im a dental assistant and also had one they don't hurt the only reason they hurt is when you wait months to get it and now the tooth is infected so the anesthetic is fighting the infection there for you don't get numb. Other wise its like a regular dental procedure.
Avatar n tn Lidocaine used as an anesthetic often has a small amount of epinephrine in the solution. The amount is so small that I have never heard of it causing tachycardia, although this is theoretically possible. Lidocaine and epinephrine is used in the suturing of millions of wounds every year with no cardiac events. My guess is that that is a coincidence here. The temporary fast heart rate in the absence of chest pain, pressure or other symptoms should have no long-lasting effects whatsoever.
