Epinephrine for dental work

Common Questions and Answers about Epinephrine for dental work

epipen

Avatar f tn It's the epinephrine in the anesthetic that causes the racing heart, etc. Next time you're at the dentist and you need/want an anesthetic ask for one WITHOUT epinephrine. The medication generally takes a little longer to "kick in" and wears off faster, but your dentist will work with you for maximum comfort.
Avatar f tn My EP said the thinking used to be that the dental work would introduce bacteria into the bloodstream that could come to rest on a floppy valve and cause more problems. I've taken antibiotics most of my life for dental work because of a slight mitral valve regurge. According to the EP, recent studies show that the same amount of bacteria is in the bloodstream after a meal. Antibiotics also interfere with Warfarin, or perhaps Vitamin K, if memory serves.
Avatar f tn I do all dental work without epi and my dentist knows I will let her know if something starts to wear off. She's great at asking me as she goes along if I am doing ok. Have you been to this dentist before? I am sure even if you go with the epi, you'll be fine too. Lots of people are! Good luck!
Avatar f tn s the epinephrine that is in the lidocaine. You can ask your dentist to use an anesthetic without epinephrine, I have had tons of dental work and always ask for that. Dentist doesn't mind at all and I've never had any problems. It doesn't last as long but if you start to feel anything while they are working the dentist will just give you more. I have done fine with it.
Avatar f tn By the way, I've been a dental assistant for 10 years so I do have some knowledge on dental procedures but of course its always good to check with your ob before you have any type of procedure done.
1817071 tn?1366228243 I have had a ton of dental work done and I remind my dentist every time no epinephrine. Also something to be aware of...if you have a tooth crowned when they are doing the crown prep they use a string coated in epinephrine to retract your gum prior to making the impressions. It is equivalent to about 3 shots with epi. They have string that does not have the epinephrine so be sure to remember to ask if you are having a tooth crowned.
Avatar m tn I have ME/CFS and I hadnt seen the online warnings that for those of us with ME, anethestics with the epinephrine in them can be very bad and best avoided for those of us with this, so I found this out the hard way. I didnt have any other pain relief except this lidocaine injection so my reaction was certainly from that. It caused me to have a near seizure or a seizure. My legs started majorly jerking, I started twitching all over.
Avatar f tn I have had dental work done at all stages of pregnancy my dentist says that it's best in the 2nd trimester but can be done at anytime. As far as the wisdom teeth they told me I needed them out when I was pregnant with my 2nd I opted to wait till I had the baby. You can do it while your pregnant but you won't be able to be put out for it and won't be able to take as strong of a pain med or antibiotic.
Avatar n tn It may be due to the epinephrine but since they removed that element, it could be either anxiety/nervousness or what we call lidocaine toxicity. The anesthetic may have made its way through the bloodstream and into your brain, resulting in some of the symptoms you've described. Which tooth are they treating?
Avatar f tn Will the loose skin return to normal, how long does it take, and how can this be prevented in future dental work? Did the dentist inject the local too quickly or not quite in the right place? Did the local get into the soft tissues of my face and I don't know, displace adipose tissue or something, is that even possible?
Avatar f tn It is much, much weaker than epineprhine and you would get a much, much lower dose of it than dental injection with epinephrine. Even so, I would just play it safe for regular exams and just get tropicamide which should not affect blood pressure or pulse.
Avatar f tn Yep I am getting a root canal. Pain has lessened because apparently the nerve is dying now, oh joy. Luckily my insurance changed over and now it at least covers part of it, what a relief.
Avatar n tn The second trimester is OK to do dental work if necessary. I'm not sure i follow. The root canal has gone bad and you're in pain?? or the tooth has broken and you will require a post and crown to restore the tooth. Either way, it's OK to have novocaine without epinephrine, and only take x-rays if absolutely necessary with double shielding.
Avatar f tn In local anesthetics (like those used in dentistry), it's the epinephrine that's mixed in with the anesthetic that causes the problems for most patients with dysautonomia. There are local anesthetic formulations available without epinephrine, they just last for shorter periods of time and may require higher doses for efficacy.
Avatar f tn I got all my dental work done in my first trimester. Had a wisdom tooth pulled in my second and about to get another wisdom tooth pulled Thursday and I'm now 34 weeks. My dentist was iffy on doing any dental work in my third trimester but my dr said it's perfectly fine.
Avatar m tn Hello everyone. I am in need of having to get some dental work done where I know for sure that I am going to be needing antiobiotics. Since my heart is so sensitive to stimulants such as, caffeine, asthma inhalers, choclate, antihistamines, and too much sugar and salt I am very worried about having to take these antibiotics for probably a week or so maybe even twice a day. My mom tells me that people die because of certain antibiotics.
Avatar n tn For the first time in 37 years, two weeks ago when I received regular dental anesthetic my heart raced and I started having palpitations. It passed of course in a few minutes and when I went in yesterday for a root canal I asked for the anesthetic without epi. The first shot was fine, but the second injection sill caused my heart to pound hard, my chest felt shallow and made me feel a little panicy. It passed and the 3rd injection did the same.
Avatar f tn My dentist had my OB sign something saying that should I need dental work they would use injectable anesthesia but it needs to be epinephrine free!!!
290867 tn?1333569278 i am 33 week and i go in this morning for a root canal they say that the third trimester is the best time to get dental work done. Because in your first your babies organs are starting to develop.
Avatar f tn The reason for my question is because I have to take a very high dose of amoxicillin prior to dental work do to a congenital heart defect and it happens to be time for some dental work and I'm just about 22 weeks pregnant. My obgyn, says it's not genetic to be allergic and its probably just a fluke so many in his family are, my pcp says the babies chances are higher due to my husband's allergy.
Avatar f tn I went when I was 8weeks and im 24 weeks now and need to go again. Its the same as all dental appointments. Just ask for an extra xray vest if u get xrays and also they have something thats like novacain idk how to spell it. Anyway ask for that, it doesnt have something in it that novacain does that makes that babys heart beat faster.
Avatar f tn U usually feel like that with the epinephrine in the numbing agent..it usually goes away. I'm a dental assistant so I see these kinds of things.
Avatar m tn I've dental work done in the past 3 weeks and I've been prescribed two antibiotics. Zithromax took for 5 days as directed One week later prescribed Amoxycillin 2x875mg twice daily for 7 days. On the 4th day of the amoxy I woke up with hives mostly on arms neck and chest and a little red dwelling around lower left eye (lid swollen) (i stopped the amoxy) I took Benedryl 1x25mg four times 4 hours apart.
Avatar f tn Teeth cleaning is perfectly fine I'm 28 weeks and just went to the dentist last month to have my teeth cleaned and a week ago I got crowns done so it's definitely ok. I'm not sure about whitening though.
1047019 tn?1256719961 More than likely you didn't have an allergic reaction, it's so rare for that to happen. The dentist probably injected the novacaine directly into the vein instead of into the gum like they were supposed to. This happened to me 2 years ago and I seriously thought I was going to do. If it wasn't injected into your vein then you are probably just hypersensitive to it. Your allergy to wheat and gluten probably has nothing to do with the novacaine.
Avatar f tn Lol she said is way worse to sit and risk an infection and anything of that sort.. But I was really scarred to get dental work done, but with reassurance from both my ob and dentist the pain is long gone...
1399363 tn?1462342610 i have been experiancing tachycardia and palpitation for years for unknown reason (doctors still couldnt find it but it's not psychologycal problem) and on beta-blocker. I just got root cannal treatment for 1 teeth last week for the 1 day. The doctor killed the nerve(thats what they told me) temporary filled it and sent me home. Yesterday i went back there and the doctor said they clean up my root cannal and pull out the nerve, filled it and sent me home.
Avatar n tn More likely is that there was or is some underlying predisposition for her to have a seizure and this traumatic event set off her episode. Has she ever had dental work with a local before? or was this her first cavity? I don't know if she is prone to seizures or what the chances of this happening again would be. I will do some investigating and research to see what sort of rate of occurrence exists with seizures and local anesthetics.
