Epinephrine and heart attacks

Common Questions and Answers about Epinephrine and heart attacks

epipen

Avatar f tn Doctors were no help at first, then I was medicated with a Beta blocker for an entirely different problem (blood pressure and heart rate issues) and wow.....the anxiety attacks calmed almost immediately, MD said it was being caused by the beta blocker slowing the "flight or fight" response coming with the anxiety attack, slowing the a"push" and responding with the nor epinephrine faster....slowing the heart rate, lowering the BP, etc.
Avatar f tn It's the epinephrine in the anesthetic that causes the racing heart, etc. Next time you're at the dentist and you need/want an anesthetic ask for one WITHOUT epinephrine. The medication generally takes a little longer to "kick in" and wears off faster, but your dentist will work with you for maximum comfort.
Avatar f tn Epinephrine is the a hormone and neurotransmiter. It is produced by the adrenal gland an is a "fight-or-flight catecholamine." So is norepinephrine. In biochemistry, the prefix "nor" means that norepinephrine is an analog of epinephrine. They function quite differently in the body. epinephrine is most commonly thought of in terms of t effect on the sympathetic nervous system - increasing heart rate, increasing blood pressure, hyper alertness, etc.
Avatar f tn I recently went through a similar experience with lidocaine. I had a ruptured cyst in my breast and as it had broken through one of my milk ducts it had developed an abscess. The doctor wouldn't let me leave without having a butt shot of antibiotics - she wanted fast acting because I had a high fever and my breast was the size of Mount St. Helens. When the nurse came in to inject me she made the mistake of telling me that it was antibiotic PLUS lidocaine.
Avatar f tn Involved is the sympathetic nervous system that prepares the body for action...oftened referred to as the "fight or flight" response to a stressful situation. And it quickly does the following and heart rate is only one factor: Increases strength of skeletal muscles Decreases blood clotting time Increases heart rate Increases sugar and fat levels Reduces intestinal movement Inhibits tears, digestive secretions.
Avatar n tn m wondering with my heart problem how dangerous is it to get a dose of epinephrine and how will that affect my heart? I had an epinephrine dose in the early nineties due to a breathing problem, but that was before I was diagnosed with the mvp and atrial misfire.
Avatar m tn s always high. I get heart rates of 100-150 (though my resting heart rate is 50), ice cold hands and fingers, palpitations, almost the feeling of panic. And my BP answers with results up to 160/90. If I, towards all odds, manage to stay calm when I measure it, it's usually 110/60 or lower. BP and heart rate aren't especially related but if your heart rate is high, there is usually a reason for that (elevated stress hormones) which also increases the blood pressure.
Avatar f tn s correct that local anesthetics contain both lidocaine and adrenalin (epinephrine). They both can have effects on the heart, adrenalin has an obvious effect and lidocaine is actually an antiarrhythmic drug (class 1b sodium blocker) which may have proarrhythmic effects. The problem is - adrenalin is added to prevent the lidocaine from having systemic effects, the blood vessels are constricted. If you have reactions towards lidocaine, choosing the one without adrenalin would be bad.
1817071 tn?1366228243 I have had a ton of dental work done and I remind my dentist every time no epinephrine. Also something to be aware of...if you have a tooth crowned when they are doing the crown prep they use a string coated in epinephrine to retract your gum prior to making the impressions. It is equivalent to about 3 shots with epi. They have string that does not have the epinephrine so be sure to remember to ask if you are having a tooth crowned.
Avatar f tn I had to get stitches last night, and was given 5-6 shots of epinephrine and lidocane. I told the intake nurse I was taking synthroid (which I presume implies thyroid problems). I felt a little "unusual" afterward (pounding heart, feeling calm and detached..), and was googling the side effects of the shot.. an article said this: "Additionally, epinephrine and lidocaine usually aren’t used in patients with thyroid disease, or disease of the kidneys or liver.
Avatar f tn Do these drops have enough in it to maybe cause for me to have the same reaction? So far I always got eye drops without epinephrine/or something equal to epinephrine, but this last eye doctor did not want to use any drops at all. He examined my eyes without dialating them.
Avatar n tn I had a 2nd trimester miscarriage the day that I had a mole removed at my dermatologist. They used Epinephrine and Xylocaine and when we received the autopsy report it revealed that my baby was perfectly normal and healthy without chromosonal issues prior to him dieing in my womb that day. Has anyone experienced this or known anyone who has? I researched on the web and found many warnings about pregnant women receiving Lidocaine from the dentist but not what they gave me.
Avatar n tn The amount is so small that I have never heard of it causing tachycardia, although this is theoretically possible. Lidocaine and epinephrine is used in the suturing of millions of wounds every year with no cardiac events. My guess is that that is a coincidence here. The temporary fast heart rate in the absence of chest pain, pressure or other symptoms should have no long-lasting effects whatsoever. An EKG will verify that because tissue death is reflected in an abnormal ST segment.
1305767 tn?1361192676 m thinking the epinephrine sends my anxiety level from like a six to a ten. Last November I had a tooth pulled and while the dentist was injecting the shot my heart rate got so high I almost passed out. They put a monitor on my finger and it was about 150! That is just crazy.
16361457 tn?1449652821 I was finally diagnosed with dysautonomia after having rapid heartbeat, insomnia, panick attacks and head and chest pressure for 8 months. The doctor did not specify which type of dysautonomia it is but I thinks it is POTS. The symptoms started after the tooth infection which was very painful and it passed after few days of antibiotics. A day after antibiotc course, all these symtoms started.
Avatar f tn blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body such as ephinephrine on the heart and blood vessels." It also says to consult your doctor before using if you have "..........a certain type of tumor (pheochromocytoma)." Should we ask about waiting to begin this beta-blocker until after the 24-hour urine collection is finished? Will starting it now possible skew the results?
Avatar f tn Sometimes environmental, diurnal and temperature variations can trigger attacks. These are difficult to avoid, but you could be aware and protect yourself if they are the causative factors. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn That was surgically repaired in Jan and now my heart has settled down I have a heart rate between 60 -70. From the sublime to the ridiculous!!!
Avatar m tn I am sensitive to caffeine, alcohol, sugar, salt, and any source of stimulants where as I get heart palpitations and flutters. I do not know what to do because If I cannot take any meds or antibiotics how will I ever overcomes this gum disease or any other for that matter?
Avatar n tn I am 32 and have suffered from migraines for about 3 years. They started pretty much out of the blue, however, a lot of people in my family suffer from them. I have tried nortriptaline, amitriptaline, verapamil, all without success. The first two didn't do anything for my migraines, and the verapamil made my blood pressure so low I couldn't function.
Avatar n tn both WITHOUT EPINEPHRINE,YES,WITHOUT EPINEPHRINE and I made sure of that before the skin test. They had to discontinue the Lidocaine because of heart side effects. But they finished with the other one and they thought that everything was fine and sent me home..The next day,BOOM! they hit with a vengence..P.V.C.S over and over again lasting for 3 weeks or so until they finally tapered off.
1089281 tn?1314567514 I TAKE FLECANIDE FOR AFIB AND AM ALLERGIC TO EPINEPHRINE (CAUSES IRREGULAR HEART RATE) . CAN OR SHOULD I GET THE CVID VACCINE?
Avatar f tn There is also a specific condition which is found in about 30% of East Asians (Japan, China and Korea) called the alcohol flushing response which includes elevated heart rate as well as facial flushing after drinking alcohol. This is caused by an acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2) gene polymorphism. Although food ingestion does not cause heart rate elevations in experimental situations, it is always possible that it may in some people.
