Epinephrine and croup

Common Questions and Answers about Epinephrine and croup

epipen

Avatar n tn When this occurs, I drive as quickly as I can to the ER where they give him racemic epinephrine and dexamethasone. He has had a complete work-up with ENT and lung doctors at CHOP as well as allergists. The conclusion is that this is just something that he will eventually outgrow. It is very terrifying for him and I notice that it not only occurs with an upper respiratory infection, but the humidity and the "bad air days" in the summer can give him a severe case of croup.
Avatar f tn In October, my daughter turned blue and could not breath, I called 911, the hosp. diagnosed her with the Croup Virus. I was told to take her home, keep a close eye and that it was a virus so there is no medical treatment. They told me about the moist air (cold air outside, steaming shower, humidifier ect.) Over a week, it disappeared.. I am now found with complications again. She started out with a stuffy nose, and a small cough..
Avatar f tn Again i brought him and she said it was the start of CROUP. His lungs were clear and she said to give him 15mg of Prednosolone 2 tiems a day. ...it seems to get the coughing to ease up. Today i put him in the shower w me to clean him up a bit and he began to get hives on his face like crazy. scratching he was so upset. I quickly gave him Benadryl and he was ok after a while. My question is this...can the croup be causing the Hives? and was it the steam opening up his pores what made it worse?
Avatar f tn Epinephrine is the a hormone and neurotransmiter. It is produced by the adrenal gland an is a "fight-or-flight catecholamine." So is norepinephrine. In biochemistry, the prefix "nor" means that norepinephrine is an analog of epinephrine. They function quite differently in the body. epinephrine is most commonly thought of in terms of t effect on the sympathetic nervous system - increasing heart rate, increasing blood pressure, hyper alertness, etc.
Avatar n tn She is 2 years old and 11 months and it began with the first croup attack at 6 months of age. We have been to the ER 11 times and 7 times it resulted in an admission to the hospital. Nobody can explain why she gets it so much. She has never had any other illness or infection besides the croup. Never even rotovirus, only croup. A couple (2-3) times it has turned into pneumonia. The pediatric ENT did a bronchoscopy on her and it was perfectly normal.
Avatar n tn My now 16yr old had her first round of croup at 8 weeks old and turned blue in her crib and her first diagnosed asthma at age 18mos ... so you have come to the right place for "Mom" experience with croup. She had croup no less than 6-8X a year and now looking back at her history (she is documented asthmatic) she was probably having RAD or asthma going on which was misdiagnosed as croup or was croup along with the asthma. She was on nebulizerr, etc.
Avatar n tn My 14 year old daughter has had 7 bouts of vomiting and abdominal pain over the last 7 weeks. Symptoms have varied, but all episodes involved one or more bouts of vomiting and intermittent abdominal pain, always at the navel. The first two episodes included low-grade fever, sore throat and difficulty swallowing. Last five episodes had no fever. She has tested negative for strep.
Avatar f tn My son has been battling croup 5+ time a year since he was 2. He will be 6 in 12 days. Croup is always worse at nght, and if your child wakes up and can't breathe put him in the bathroom to sit with the hot shower on or bring them out into the cold air (if its cold where you live) and it will help open up the airways. If the croup is really bad, either a doctors office or the ER will give them an oral dose of steroids or an injection of it. Croup is a scary illness.
Avatar f tn It's the epinephrine in the anesthetic that causes the racing heart, etc. Next time you're at the dentist and you need/want an anesthetic ask for one WITHOUT epinephrine. The medication generally takes a little longer to "kick in" and wears off faster, but your dentist will work with you for maximum comfort.
Avatar n tn My son sounds exactly like your son, and my husband and I are so baffled as well. My son has croup right now, and we are considering having his adenoids out. How is your son doing now?
Avatar n tn We went to the ER 2 weeks ago and followed up with his md who gave him prednisone for 4 days to help with the inflamed airways for his croup, but it also lowers the immune system which is why we had to wait another week to get his vaccinations. He had an elevated body temperature last night, but it was 100.9 rectally so I wasn't too concerned. Last night and tonight he seems fussier than normal and just looks like he isn't feeling well.
Avatar f tn So this morning I took him to the doctor (I was super scared that he may have the swine flu) and discovered he has croup. I have been sent home with a slew of medicines to administer, and a sick little baby to care for. The poor thing. Anyway my ped said that croup is pretty common this time of year, but he had seen some pretty mean strains so far. That's what I wanted to share... that, apparently, a mean strain of croup circulating around this winter.
Avatar f tn My (just turned) one yr mold had hand foot and mouth AND croup two weeks before He's birthday. One after the other, it was heart breaking but Dr said they are as common as a cold and just the same, except the spots / cough make it seem worse. They have him oral steroid one a day for three days and he was himself two days later. It ***** but it's all part and parcel with being a parent.
Avatar f tn Awe, I hope she feels better soon, my LG is almost 4 weeks and has a stuffy nose, it's so sad seeing her try to eat and have to stop a bunch of times because she can't breathe, poor girls!!
568659 tn?1256139982 Noah got croup over the weekend and I cant remember if that is something that he needs to go to the doctor for or if it should clear up on it's own. I have been doing the hot shower thing and taking him out in the cold air. I also have a humidifier in his room and I have been giving him chamomile tea with honey but he seems to be getting worse. What do you ladies think?
Avatar f tn Their asthma is triggered by viruses and infections like croup and bronchitis. We have a nebulizer, a spacer and an aerochamber -- every kind of inhaler possible. They don't need them all the time, but when they do, we are prepared. About a month ago, my 5 1/2 year old woke up gasping and sounding like he had croup. It was the worst we'd ever experienced and he told me he felt like he was going to die. It broke my heart!
Avatar f tn As a new and first time mother I could not get any one (including 6 peditricians) to listen to me until he was a year old and had to hospitalized for croup in June. Apparently this is out of the norm for our area. Even at that point no one was concerned or felt that we should do any type of preventitive medications. Then when he was 18 months old he got what I assumed was croup again, I called the pediatrician and they called in his usual round of steroids, at this point he had croup appx.
Avatar n tn Hello. The cysts can be benign, or harmless. You will probably need to monitor your nephew's growth and development closely. And also watch for any symptoms. The cysts are pockets of fluid collection. These form during the early development stages. What problems did your nephew had with the throat ?
1817071 tn?1366228243 I have had a ton of dental work done and I remind my dentist every time no epinephrine. Also something to be aware of...if you have a tooth crowned when they are doing the crown prep they use a string coated in epinephrine to retract your gum prior to making the impressions. It is equivalent to about 3 shots with epi. They have string that does not have the epinephrine so be sure to remember to ask if you are having a tooth crowned.
Avatar f tn I had to get stitches last night, and was given 5-6 shots of epinephrine and lidocane. I told the intake nurse I was taking synthroid (which I presume implies thyroid problems). I felt a little "unusual" afterward (pounding heart, feeling calm and detached..), and was googling the side effects of the shot.. an article said this: "Additionally, epinephrine and lidocaine usually aren’t used in patients with thyroid disease, or disease of the kidneys or liver.
Avatar f tn s left after the epinephrine is spent, and normetanephrine, the inactive metabolite of norepinephrine, which they also measure). But it sounds like from what you are saying that it doesn't block the emission of epinephrine, just the action it takes- I'd suggest if you don't hear quickly from your doctor you consult a knowledgeable pharmacist for their opinion.
Avatar n tn I had a 2nd trimester miscarriage the day that I had a mole removed at my dermatologist. They used Epinephrine and Xylocaine and when we received the autopsy report it revealed that my baby was perfectly normal and healthy without chromosonal issues prior to him dieing in my womb that day. Has anyone experienced this or known anyone who has? I researched on the web and found many warnings about pregnant women receiving Lidocaine from the dentist but not what they gave me.
Avatar f tn Involved is the sympathetic nervous system that prepares the body for action...oftened referred to as the "fight or flight" response to a stressful situation. And it quickly does the following and heart rate is only one factor: Increases strength of skeletal muscles Decreases blood clotting time Increases heart rate Increases sugar and fat levels Reduces intestinal movement Inhibits tears, digestive secretions.
Avatar f tn So far I always got eye drops without epinephrine/or something equal to epinephrine, but this last eye doctor did not want to use any drops at all. He examined my eyes without dialating them.
Avatar m tn Hi, It is a serotonin and nor epinephrine reuptake inhibitor. The name of the neurotransmitter is nor epinephrine it is different from epinephrine. Most of the side effects occur during the period when one is taking the medication. But the important thing to remember is to follow the doctors instructions carefully. To reduce the incidence of side effects it is always started with a low dose and then it is gradually increased.
Avatar f tn s the epinephrine that is in the lidocaine. You can ask your dentist to use an anesthetic without epinephrine, I have had tons of dental work and always ask for that. Dentist doesn't mind at all and I've never had any problems. It doesn't last as long but if you start to feel anything while they are working the dentist will just give you more. I have done fine with it.
