Epinephrine and allergic reaction

Common Questions and Answers about Epinephrine and allergic reaction

epipen

Avatar m tn This can be a serious and life-threatening problem. The minute sensitivity starts, the next attack may result in death and an antidote should be kept on the person forever. It is not unusual for such a sensitivity to start at some point in life for reasons that are unclear. Consult your allergist to put together a "kit" of emergency medications. Prednisone, epinephrine and an antihistamine are commonly prescribed and kept on hand. You must srupulously avoid shellfish.
1047019 tn?1256719961 This happened to be once, the dentist called it an adverse reaction, but needless to say the next time I had to have novacaine I was a nervous wreck. But that was almost 30 years ago, and it has never happened again. Sorry I couldn't answer you question.
338416 tn?1420045702 Bob, do you think the Epipen would work to control a Copaxone allergic reaction? (Not that it matters - I'm not taking it any more!) So it sounds like the allergy pill wasn't keeping an allergic reaction from Copaxone at bay... I still have to wonder if it had something to do with the angioedema.
Avatar f tn When I called the office they told me it was probably not the lidocaine but instead was a reaction to the epinephrine. It landed me in the ER that night and since that single incident, I've tried to stay away from both. Incidentally, after my ablation for a-fib 15 mo. ago, I've started having short tachycardia episodes (10-30 min) and my EP has told me to take a "beta-blocker in a pocket" and it has, thank God, helped to shorten the episodes.
1666434 tn?1325262350 Then about 2 weeks ago I go to the dentist and have an immediate reaction to Septocaine which contains epinephrine which has Sulfites in it, grrrr. Do I need a medical alert bracelet or necklace?
Avatar f tn The dentist prescribed Halcyon (which I took 1 hour before the appointment) saying it will relax me and make numbing easier and the non-epinephrine local anesthetic last longer. He gave me 2 shots of local on each side. Afterwards, I felt slight pain at one of the injection places, no pain anywhere else. The next day, my face was swollen, and I still had just the slight pain from one of the injections. The swelling was just of the skin of my face, not inside my mouth, not on my lips.
750269 tn?1233271586 Hello. I am 19 years old and I think I am allergic to water. It sounds crazy, and it truly is. When I take a shower I usually have my water warm, and by the end of my shower I am covered in itchy hives. It happens no matter where I take a shower. I get them manly on my back, neck, and chest. I do not just get hives in the shower...I get them when I go swimming!! It seems to me that the hotter the water, the faster they occur. I get them when I sweat, and my cheeks burn when I cry.
Avatar f tn And yes sweating will get me into a reaction, and its worse since friday, and Im taking 2 kinds of antihistaminics and now have to try Penactyl :S I will try that tonight I hope that will help...
539780 tn?1213943976 Emergency medical kits containing self-administrable epinephrine to counter anaphylactic shock are available for allergic people and should be carried by them at all times. People who suspect they are allergic should consult an allergist about shots that can reduce reactions to bee and wasp venom. Most stings can be treated at home.
Avatar f tn Hello, You seem to be allergic to penicillin/augmentin.Pls discontinue taking augmentin as you may get an anaphylactic reaction which may be fatal. Allergic reaction to augmentin includes hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
1639028 tn?1300617084 Hi, welcome to the forum, anaphylaxis is an emergency allergic reaction and is due to hypersensitivity reaction (type 1). Usually responsible allergen is known. Drugs like amoxicillin, certain painkillers, certain garments, environmental allergen and certain food (fish, mushroom, peanuts, soy etc) can cause such reaction. You need to keep track of things (maintain a diary) you were exposed to such as food, cloths, drugs etc. and you should avoid further exposure.
Avatar f tn I had 25mg of benadryl when I had an anaphylactic reaction in 1988 after being given epinephrine, and I slept for 3 days. Every time I tried to wake up, I kept falling back to sleep and couldn't awaken. I couldn't call for help either. They had to break down my door to see if I was okay because I didn't show up for work - just from 25 mg of benadryl!
Avatar f tn Epinephrine is the a hormone and neurotransmiter. It is produced by the adrenal gland an is a "fight-or-flight catecholamine." So is norepinephrine. In biochemistry, the prefix "nor" means that norepinephrine is an analog of epinephrine. They function quite differently in the body. epinephrine is most commonly thought of in terms of t effect on the sympathetic nervous system - increasing heart rate, increasing blood pressure, hyper alertness, etc.
Avatar f tn t know whether my condition was the result of an infection, an allergic reaction, or something else, though my dentist admitted to having worn latex gloves. The swelling gradually moved up to my cheeks and under my eyes and my upper lip and cheeks were protruding. I wasn't running a fever, and I didn't have itching or redness.
Avatar f tn Hello, I cannot confirm anything without examination but it can be contact dermatitis or allergic reaction to the chlorine in the swimming pool water. Treatment includes epinephrine, antihistamines, or cortisone-like drugs. Take some oral antihistaminic like Benadryl and apply calamine lotion. Itching can be controlled with cold packs or commercial topical agents that contain menthol, camphor, eucalyptus oil, aloe, antihistamines, or cortisone preparations.
Avatar f tn I have the heat allergy reaction and one time had exercise induced anaphalaxis. I went out to dinner, came home to exercise, took 2 excedrin and went to bed. I woke up in the middle of the reaction. Eating then excercising or taking med like excedrin then excercising can bring it on. I now carry an epi-pen and benydryl with me.
Avatar f tn This definitely does sound like an allergic reaction of some sort because you said the shot helped for little while. I would keep on working with your doctor to try to find the source of your hives...they can almost come from anything, but of course if you have problems breathing and have really bad breakouts I would go get it checked out ASAP, but if the Benedryl is working I would say that it is not anxiety in my opinion; although this can CAUSE alot of anxiety! Keep us posted!!
Avatar f tn I feel king of dumb asking this, but has anyone here had an allergic reaction to bees that comes back hours later? After getting stung by bees I usually have about a 20-30 minute "window" to get to my epi shot and benedryl -my reaction is unusual in that I get dizzy, my blood pressure crashes, and my throat and chest get really tight. -No rashes or redness...
Avatar n tn It all depends on the amount of allergen to which you are exposed and also to the resistance and reaction of your body to the allergen.Secondly, epipens contain epinephrine or adrenaline. They are used to treat anaphylactic shock. Using an EpiPen that has expired is mostly discouraged but is better than no medication in emergencies.
Avatar n tn I had a similar reaction, and, in fact, I passed out. Next time I went to a different eye doctor and she suggested I may have an allergy to epinephrine. Actually, I later found out my mother has an allergy to epinephrine. The doctor was able to take pictures of my eyes which are apparently a decent alternative to dilation.
Avatar f tn So far I always got eye drops without epinephrine/or something equal to epinephrine, but this last eye doctor did not want to use any drops at all. He examined my eyes without dialating them.
Avatar m tn Take extreme care to avoid those substances you can identify that act as antigens and provoke a systemic reaction. Clearly, you require an albuterol emergency inhaler (not the epinephrine sold in the drug stores). Your physician may also prescribe anti-histamines and prednisone for emergencfy use. "Cheaper and convenient" have no meaning for those in the grave.
