Avatar f tn Anyone have elevated ammonia levels? Are you having any symptoms and at what level did your symptoms start? I just had my first ammonia screening done and the level came back 119, with less than 47 being the reference range. I'm not having any symptoms. This seems to be the story of my life. All of my labs are going whacky and I'm still feeling fine. I'm afraid one of these days it's all going to hit and I'll be a mess.
Avatar f tn While elevated ammonia levels are seen in cirrhotic patients there can be encephalopathy with normal ammonia levels and there can also be no mental impairment in some patients with elevated ammonia levels. Basically, ammonia levels are of limited use for diagnosing cirrhosis or hepatic impairment. I would also think some other results of your blood work would have been out of range if you are cirrhotic or are suffering significant liver impairment.
412873 tn?1329174455 Does anyone know the name for the condition that leads to elevated ammonia levels in the blood? I think it happens when the liver is less able to remove toxins from the blood and can lead to confusion and other symptoms. Thanks for any input.
Avatar f tn I know that Hep patients need to be monitored for elevated ammonia levels, so why did it take me, a CNA of 17 years, to be the one who brought this to their attention? According to their charts they never checked the levels until after I called, this means that the nurse lied to me. Is it just me or did I possible just help to save my uncle's life? I am begining to think that this teaching University Hosptial is not what it is craked up to be.
Avatar n tn THIS IS THE INFO I HAVE BEEN GIVEN CONCERNING AMMONIA LEVELS. NORMAL IS 80 AND UNDER. MY AMMONIA HAS BECOME ELEVATED AS HIGH AS 800. WHEN MY AMMONIA BECOMES ELEVATED, ENCEPHALOPATHY SETS IN. THIS CAUSES ME TO BECOME CONFUSED, DISORIENTED, AND UNSTEADY ON MY FEET. THIS IS USUALLY THE POINT WHERE I END UP IN THE HOSPITAL.

Avatar f tn He had numerous episodes with elevated ammonia levels and severe confusion before transplant. His ammonia levels continue to go up even after transplant. All on his blood tests, bioposy, ultrasound are shw normal lover functions. He has been hospitalized several times after transplant for confusion. His ammonia levels can be as little as 10 points above normal to 165. This makes it hard to do anything. He takes 9 Rifaximin a day and at first sign..if I catch it.. I give him lactulose.
Avatar n tn Aher docs looking into the possibility that there may be liver problems as a result of either the chemo or the pancreatic issues? Elevated blood ammonia levels are typically due to liver problems or disease although there are some unusual circumstances in which someone can have an elevated ammonia and a normal liver. If there is any possibility that her liver might be damaged the elevated ammonia may be due to that. The problems you're seeing in forgetfulness etc.
Avatar n tn At the age of 36 she had to have a complete gastrectomy(entire stomach removed) due to massive polyps. One year ago she started developing high ammonia levels, range from upper 60's to 110. Massive headaches seem to accompany the elevated levels. She has had liver function tests and biopsies for years now and have determined the problem isn't her liver. They prescribed lactulose and Xifaximim(antibiotic given to liver disease patients, might have the spelling wrong).

Avatar m tn If you have decompensated cirrhosis, with elevated ammonia levels and hepatic encephalopathy I have see many patients say they have been prescribed Lactulose http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a682338.html But you definitely need to have this conversation with your liver specialist .
1475202 tn?1536270977 Since not all persons with cirrhosis are affected by elevated ammonia levels what’s the point in the test? Some persons are greatly affected with slightly elevated ammonia levels while others with experience no symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy with high ammonia levels or vice versa. Seeming that the test is irrelevant or at least this is the way of thinking by my hepatologist during my most recent visit to the transplant center in my area. So why do we even talk about it?
Avatar n tn He was advised to increase the lactulose to 30 ml twice a day for 5 days and then resume back to 15 ml twice a day. Is there any other medication for elevated ammonia? The side effects to lactulose are intolerable at times. He is experiencing depression, mood changes and personality changes. He did take the treatment of Ribavirin and Pegasys which was not effective.
Avatar m tn my mother was very lethargic and we took her to ER. She had an ammonia levels of 169. would this be the reason and is this related to the liver?
Avatar n tn My ammonia levels have increased to 159. I am not at the present experiencing confusion but I feel as if I a in a fog and have muscle soreness all over. Can this be from the elevated levels. I do have stag 4 cirrohis and hep C but HCV load is not detectable at this time.
Avatar m tn If the liver is failing, high ammonia levels can cause depression, head pressing, dull mentation, and seizures, especially right after a meal. If BUN, albumin, glucose, and cholesterol are all low and certain liver enzymes are high, it indicates liver failure +/- an acquired shunt. This is just a guess without seeing the numbers.
Avatar f tn Hi, Well i must say that God was really watching over you. It's a miracle that you have returned to normal state after having such a high level of ammonia. In India, we have never seen anyone alive after such a high level. I can just say that, the medical care you received was EXCELLENT! How are you doing now? All the best.
1481758 tn?1287638643 My question is, is it common for meds that can dehydrate you (e.g diuretics, antihistamines etc in combo) to contribute to elevated ammonia levels? Esp if not historically drinking enough H20 and too much diet coke? Also take 20mg zolpidem and 1mg clonazepam ea nite and zyrtech 10mg every night and sometimes supplement w/benedryl 50mg if allergies and/sleep issues.
Avatar m tn After being told that there was nothing wrong with me for three years a geneticist discovered that my ammonia levels (reference range is 12-47 umol/L) were double and triple what they should have been after eating. I should also note that during that time I was having Ensure meal replacements as I thought this was a healthier option. After cutting down on protein, taking lactulose (30ml/3x/day) and starting Rifaximin (600mg/2x/day for the encephalopathy) my symptoms quickly started to improve.
190885 tn?1333025891 I am assuming you have cirrhosis? (I have a list of cirrhotics but I know it doesn't include everyone with cirrhosis here). Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) and brain fog are two different conditions. "Brain fog" has nothing to do with ammonia levels. Most ammonia in the body forms when protein is broken down by bacteria in the intestines. The liver normally converts ammonia into urea, which is then eliminated in urine.
Avatar n tn If you suspect that you are experiencing encephalopathy, you should contact your physician immediately to have your ammonia levels checked, as there are medications that can alleve the symptoms. I hope you are currently under the care of a good hepatologist -- if you are stage 3 or 4, it would be important for you to be followed by a doctor familiar with liver disease and hep c. Hope this helps.
1654058 tn?1407159066 For example, a person with severe cirrhosis may have only slightly elevated blood ammonia levels and yet may not be thinking clearly or may be sleepy or in a coma. Other people with very high ammonia levels may think and act normally.
Avatar m tn Lactulose previously used and excretion working normal other than loss of muscle control. I heard there are other ways that serum ammonia levels can get elevated. Do you know any?
Avatar m tn High blood ammonia levels can occur with various forms of chronic liver disease, acute liver failure and gastrointestinal bleeding. Elevated blood ammonia levels adversely affect brain function. Early diagnosis and treatment of an elevated blood ammonia level helps reduce the risk of potentially life-threatening complications.
