My doctor told me that Effexor XR does not affect your weight and if anything it causes loss of appetite or weight loss, which I did read on the perscription label from the pharmacy.
Lately, I've been doing more research and all I am finding are blogs about people who have gained a minimum of 25 lbs!!!!!
Can someone give me a straight answer as to yes, it makes you gain weight or no it does not?
I would not call myself an expert on effexor xr, I can only share the info I had as a sales person for the company. Effexor xr is a very potent drug (antidepressant) and people need to understand that before taking it. You cannot just stop when you want, you must taper off the drug. This is due to Effexor xr at higher doses, anything above 37.5 mg which is the lowest starting dose will cause some type of w/d if stopped suddenly.
My doctor has now taken me off the Avanza at night and prescribed 15mg Reductil to take with the Effexor in an effort to perk me up a bit and help with the weight.
My own research, the pharmacists concerns etc are making me think that this combination would not be advisable.
As my sugar is also starting to be a problem, I did suggest to my doctor that perhaps metaformin would be a better aid to assist with the weight issue.
did tell me very vague about the Effexor XR and that Pristiq was its cousin. Now, I will say that when I was on Effexor XR I had horrible leg cramps to the point I couldn't move. They put me on rls meds. When I got off the Effexor my leg cramps stopped. I still have leg tremors, but nothing like before.

I called the pdoc back and he's having me take a 75 effexor xr and my pristiq 50---I guess a ween off of it, no more brain zaps for now, I dont know what will happen after I stop taking effexor all together, we shall see in a few weeks.
As for the comment above, I too have seen people have to pay out of pocket for perscriptions and its usually elderly and people like me, who had been laid off and take medications and are put into a situation of having to pay out of pocket, what to do?
Effexor DOES make you gain weight....and get bloated, etc. I was taking effexor XR since 2004 and gained 45 pounds....my Dr. said it's not from the drug; but I knew it was and couldn't convince him until I mentioned the other side effect of not being able to have an orgasm. I would also get extremely bloated & had severe stomach pain & my stomach felt hard as a rock. I had stomach ex-rays and nothing was found to be wrong so finally after all these yrs I convinced the Dr.
Has anyone out there ever used Effexor for anxiety and panic disorder, I am running out of options the only one I have not tired is Paxil and my Dr. refuses.... ( Must be a reason, cannot be any worse then Prozac was) I am doing ok on 37.5 mg and every time I try going up to 75 mg I feel worse, so wondering ig I need to go higher or just stay at 37.5 and feel so so!!
I have been taking Effexor XR for years and I am in the process of weaning off this drug. I am down to 37.5 mg and am experiencing rapid weight gain and bloating. Has anyone else had this problem while withdrawing from Effexor? I have not changed my diet and exercise routine one bit yet still gain weight. Help!
ve NEVER had this from depression- gasp. anybody had this kind of thing? To be stressed about possible job loss- and then screw up from loss of memory, zero concentration etc. is really bad for me- I made a mistakeI COULD NOT BELIEVE I HAD MADE and had zero memory of making - a big one... this is really scary. could the meds be poisoning me after years on most of them? I have added buspar for teeth grinding- is it old age- mom has alzheimers?
This is why Effexor XR is made with a slow release formula. This keep a steady flow of the drug in the system and reduces spikes and hard drops between dosages.
One way around this with Venlafaxine is that you could for example take half your daily dosage twice a day. (You see what I mean?) so lets say your doc prescribed you 150Mgs of Venlafaxine a day. Then you could break that tab in half and take one in morning and one around 4:00pm.
yes bev i have been on effexor xr since 2001 and i gained a tremendous amount of weight and then my thyroid bit the dust so now i'm on meds for that. i'm hoping that will help me lose weight. it's really hard. but this profuse sweating is just awful. i'm in texas and it's already been 100 many days. i am just wondering if there is something herbal or ANYTHING that would decrease the sweating. i drink tons of water a day.
I mentioned about switching from Effexor Xr 225mg (which on my own I lowered to 150mg) He said that Effexor XR affects two different areas of the body whereas Zoloft only affects one area. Now he mentioned NOTHING about keep taking the Effexor Xr in lower does while I make hte switch to Zoloft. Am I supposed to just switch right over to Zoloft and discontinue the Effexor Xr??
ive gained at least 100 lbs health going down because of effexor xr i would never recommend this ****! i tried going off cold turkey didnt work so well . bad side ffects such as virtigo achey crying for no reason night sweats and night mares! now that ive went from 75 mg to 37.5 i feel great back to normal yay! i got on it only because i was dealing with my father dying of brain cancer felt very anxius and worried .he passed away two years ago! depression never really affected me!
Paxil began losing effectiveness and after seven years, doctors tried new medications like Lexapro which was less helpful. Finally I began Effexor, then Effexor XR, then increasing the dose last year. Though depression bleeds through occassionally, (feels more like the blues than a dark suicidal hole), I think I'm doing very well on Effexor XR 150 mg. But I can not help but wonder .... Will I eventually need 225mg? What will it take after that?
