Common Questions and Answers about Effexor xr and prozac

effexor

SO I DECIDED TO GO BACK AND HE ACTUALLY GAVE ME 10MG OF PROZAC TO OFFSET THE WITHRAWL FROM THE EFFEXOR AND IT WORKED!. HE TOLD ME TO TAKE ONE DAY OF 37.5 EFFEXOR, AND 10MG OF PROZAC. THEN FOR 3-5 DAYS TAKE JUST THE 10MG OF PROZAC. I FELT A LITTLE SICK STILL GETTING OFF THE EFFEXOR WITH THE PROZAC BUT IT WAS NOT NEARLY AS BAD. THE REASON HE GAVE THE PROZAC TO OFFSET THE EFFEXOR SIDE EFFECTS IS BECAUSE PROZAC HAS A MUCH LONGER HALF LIFE THAN EFFEXOR.
She put me on Effexor XR. I have been on it two days and I feel very groggy all day. I feel that I am not sleeping well either. Will this go away after I have been on this a couple weeks? I was also conerned about weight gain, I do not want to gain weight on this, I've read that some people have gained weight on Effexor. I used to be on Prozac too but never gained weight on that or Wellbutrin.
I have been on effexor xr for more tha 2 years. Before that I had been on prozac for about 8 years. I have PMS (hormonal) issues that is why they started me on prozac. Anyway, I went from 150 mg 2 months ago to 75 mg because I felt the 150mg was making me have insomnia, I noticed if forgot to take the effor I would sleep better. It has taken me a while to figure this out because I usally take my meds everyday. My question is can you develope side effects after being on effexor xr this long.
Has anyone out there ever used Effexor for anxiety and panic disorder, I am running out of options the only one I have not tired is Paxil and my Dr. refuses.... ( Must be a reason, cannot be any worse then Prozac was) I am doing ok on 37.5 mg and every time I try going up to 75 mg I feel worse, so wondering ig I need to go higher or just stay at 37.5 and feel so so!!
I am feeling tired most of the time.I am thinking of switching from Prozac to Effexor XR.Does Effexor XR makes you feel more energetic?
has me taking my wellbutrin 150 mg once every 3 days and had me take 1 37.5 mg of the effexor for 5 days and no more effexor just wellbutrin. I am feeling tired, nausea and headaches I asume due to no effexor. Should I have been prescribed the effexor diffrently?
I have been on Effexor XR 150 mg for 4 years and due to the cost and effect on my libido, I have started withdrawal, first tapered to 75 mg for 30 days, now on 37.5 for 15 days, then everyother day, and to continue till I'm done. Well in talking to my pharmacist she said she has seen violent reactions when people stop suddenly. My mood swings are terrible and I'm suprised my husband hasn't locked me up. I get angry, moody, incredibally sad.
I will take the withdrawl when that time comes and pay the piper. Many people complain about Effexor and it's withdrawl, but you never hear them talk about the 4 years of normalcy that it provided them. Everything worth anything comes with a cost.
Just wondering how people out there have done on Effexor XR for anxiety and panic attacks and what dose has worked for them? I started on it July 10th feel pretty good, a few panic attacks here and there but for the most feel good!!
Hello, I was diagnosed with Lyme and a co-infection about 2 years ago and was recently put on Effexor XR 150. I have been on it for about 2 months now and it has done wonders for me and my panic attacks and depression. The big problem that I have is that it has caused me to lose an enourmous amount of weight. I saw my general doc. this week and he said that my weight loss was unacceptable. You see, I am pretty skinny as it is anyway. I do not have the weight to lose.
I CLEARLY told the doctor that I did NOT want to gain weight. I just lost 30 lbs and I feel so great! My doctor told me that Effexor XR does not affect your weight and if anything it causes loss of appetite or weight loss, which I did read on the perscription label from the pharmacy. Lately, I've been doing more research and all I am finding are blogs about people who have gained a minimum of 25 lbs!!!!!
I weaned off Effexor xr very very slowly and had no withdrawal symptoms. I opened the capsules and took a few grains out. Every day I took out a couple more than the last. When I was down to 5 grains I quit. It was a long, tedious process, but totally painless. I know it sounds stupid but it works.
I have been on Effexor for about 7 years. It has been a godsend and tho I have a few of the side effects, they never come up unless I miss a dose. I recently lost my job and can no longer afford my medication so I'm having to go 'cold turkey'. This is my 3rd day without it and I'm doin ok. a little dizzy and a 'muggy' feeling in my head but I know it gets worse, I've missed as many as 4 before and I know I need to literally crawl in bed and lock my door until the worst is over. But....
I know the risk involved with being on effexor and I am TERRIFIED of coming off my medications. Effexor saved my life in regards to anxiety and panic attacks and now I am afraid to get pregnant. I know I want to be pregnant more than anything and to have a healthy baby but i'm not sure what to do. I take 37.5mg (the lowest dose) and don't know what to do. Anyone else been here?
I didn't do too well on Paxil, so 7 weeks ago he changed me to Effexor XR. Started at lowest dose for one week and now on 75 mg. a day. I started feeling a lot better but he now wants me to start weaning down off the Klonopin. I tried last week by cutting out 1/4 of my mid-day dose and after three days the anxiety started returning, not sleeping, etc so I started back on my full dose and feel fine again.
I was wondering if anyone has ever had negative side effects from drinking beer while on Effexor XR. I recently went on vacation and drank beer for 11 days straight. A few times I got pretty drunk. Since then, I have been depressed and feel like my medication is not even working. I believe the beer nullified the effects of my Effexor XR. It has been 2 weeks now since I have drank anything and still feel that depressive, blue, unable to concentrate or make decisions feeling.
Which is exciting and intimidating, because I've taken Effexor and Effexor XR for more than a decade. Over the summer, I cut my dosage in half, to 75mg. And now I'm struggling. I feel more anxiety, and I generally feel more vulnerable, reactive and tired. I also find I become angry more easily. All of which has had a negative impact on my quality of life and makes it more difficult to work. I appreciate people sharing their experiences in this forum. It's helpful to know I'm not alone.
As Cupcake said, it's much too early to tell. Sometimes these meds can make you feel a little lousy for the first couple weeks until your body adjusts. Expect that it will take a good 4 to 6 weeks before the Prozac will even start working. These SSRI meds take plenty of time to build up theraputic levels in the blood streem. They are by no means a quick fix.
I have been on effexor xr 75 for 4 weeks and stopped abruptly. I am now taking prozac 5mg to start and ativan. I am feeling gassy dizzy and have diarrea. this is my second day off and I want to know if there is anything I can take to lessen symptoms. Also very nauseated. took pepto for that. any info would be appreciated.
I can't write much, because I recently switched from Effexor XR to Cymbalta and I can barely function. One Pschiatrist (not mine...I'm suffering..
I'm wondering if maybe Effexor XR is too strong for me and maybe just the regular Effexor would be more suitable? I like the fact that I'm wired and on task all day, but the headaches aren't fun. My therapist says that if cutting my dose down on the Effexor XR resolves the headaches then she has to take me off of it altogether. Do you have any insight on this med, or perhaps suggest something else. I am afraid of staring a med that makes me feel lethargic, I have to be on task.

I was on 150 mg of effexor xr for around two years. i tapered very slowly and had horrible headaches and brain zaps that were very very scary. While tapering my doctor put me on 20 mg of prozac and I think that helped somewhat. but three months later im still having occasional brain zaps Are these symptoms going to be permanent? im afraid that the effexor has done damage to my brain.
Paxil and Effexor are the two drugs notorious for this withdrawl.
I tried Zoloft and Lexapro and they did not help. My brother is on Effexor XR so I figured I'd try it. I've been on it for 1and 1/2 years. It has helped me. To get off: I am going to try the method of opening the capsule and removing the little white balls by 5-10 % SLOWLY. I am so angry that this drug has taken me hostage! I wish everyone luck! I felt SO BAD reading the other posts hearing how everyone is suffering trying to come off it. It saddens me.
I went off Effexor a few years ago, and did experience some nerve pain in my hands and feet, and some surface numbness in my face. Those symtoms lasted for about 8 weeks, but they did eventually go away. I have heard of others who had similar symptoms. There are a number of people who need some kind of antidepressant in order to keep their body chemistry from contributing to depression.
I'll tell you, I didnt realize how bad the sides were from the Effexor XR until I switched. High BP, sexual sides, and panic attacks just to name a few. But then again, I have a friend who is taking Effexor and has very little sides and is fine. I guess its a trial and error thing for some people...some respond better then others. I just wish I would have known about Lexapro 2 years ago!
My doctor (general prac) said they are pretty much the same thing, and he switched me from effexor to cymbalta. I don't feel as crazy and out of control as I did with the effexor. I don't know how I feel about the Cymbalta yet. I AM going to see a pyschiatrist (sp?) at the end of the month, but I was just wondering if anyone has been on these. Thanks!
i cannot count the number of posts i've read here and on other forums about ppl having horrible side effects and/or withdrawal effects of meds to include effexor. i also took effexor and had similar experiences. i now refuse to take any ADs. i've been on so many that i can't even name them all! the side effects have been terrible as well as the withdrawal effects (and most of them just don't work!) remember, you are in control of what goes into your body....not some pdoc!
At that point, I'll go up to the therapeutically accepted maximum of 20mg and then go down to 37.5 of Effexor and then as the 20mg Lexapro kicks in fully, will drop the effexor like a bad habit. So far, so good I would say. I am glad to be getting off the effexor though.
