Effexor with paxil

Common Questions and Answers about Effexor with paxil

effexor

I have been taking paxil 20 mg. for about 15 years. With my doctor I am weaning down, I am on 10 mg right now for about 5 days and feel dizzy and a little foggy. I started reading about all of the terrible side effects and began to get very nervous. My situation is a little different where I am 7 weeks pregnant and that is my motivation to stop taking it. I had a rough night last night, had a panic attack and trouble sleeping. I am hoping this will not last too long.
I was on Paxil (20mg) for 1 year. I've gained 50 lbs in that one year with numerous attemtps to lose weight with no success. The most horrible thing is when you try to get OFF of the drug. The withdrawal symptoms are HORRENDOUS! You have to taper off very slowly and you feel like absolute HELL. Don't get on this drug if you don't have to.
ive been on effexor xr for 9 yrs, was on it for 7 then got off (WITH NO WITHDRAWS) but couldnt cope with anxiety on my own so after a yr later i been back on it for about another yr now and im gonna take it forever. i was on 17 medications this is the only one that has helped and its helps 99%. im happy to say ill take it the rest of my life to feel how i do. good luck and i hope it helps you as well.
After 6 of these and no tests or anything, I've had it with the meds. I was on Paxil. Paxil put loads of weight on me, made me nauseous and never really took away my anxiety. I was very very sick coming off it. I was also on Effexor which completely took away my anxiety for about a year at the highest dose. With the exception of the HUGE weight gain, both meds were OK when I was on them... coming off them is Hell on earth. (mind you, I got to lose the 60 lbs I gained on them when I came off).
I had the same problem you are having with Paxil. With me it wasn't just Paxil, but also Effexor and Cymbalta, all to treat panic attacks. I could not stand them until my mother, who had the same problem in the past, was given a tricyclic amine, in this case, nortriptolyn (Pamelor). It worked great with no side effects like the SSRIs. I slept again and basically got my life back.
that was pretty much my experince with Paxil as well,, everything became very 'unreal'. I was in my 20s, married to a military man who was often gone for guard duty leaving me alone, and we did the typical 'weekend' thing with our friends, bar hopping. Let me tell you,, there should be a REALLY strong label warning on paxil about not mixing it with any kind of alchohol.
Hi I've been on paxil for over 3 years now and really want to get off of it completely. So it's been about 2 months now that i have been cutting the dosage in half. I was on 20 mg,and now to cut them in half i just break them with my fingers, no measuring or anything. So far i feel ok, but i did feel a little dizzy the first few weeks. My intentions are to do this for about 6 months and then i guess i'll try to cut this half in half again but i'm not to sure on how to continue this.
Withdrawal is always a concern with any medication but I have to agree with you that when you are transitioning from one med to another the chance of having withdrawal from the previous med is very low!!!!! I've had panic/anxiety for 15 years and have had a smooth transition with most of my medications so dont give up!!
Your doctor is correct about the dosage, and getting off Effexor, even at high doses is not that difficult if you follow the recommendations carefully, and wean yourself over a 2-3 week period. Regarding its effect on sleeping, it should help but sometimes we see a paradoxical response..the only way to find out is to try it, and if you only use a low dose for a short time, you won't have to go through a full length withdrawal.
I have also read what appears to be a greater problem with withdrawel from the Effexor than from Paxil. She did tell me that she had read an article about Paxil and Zoloft that said they were possibly being recalled, so we thought that might have something to do with the change, though this was not addressed by her Doctor. She has been doing very well and we want to maintain that. If this is a positive change in medication, so be it.
taking them to the park everyday, going to the gym, not fighting with my husband, not crying every night. Effexor was such a life saver for me!!!
When I mixed Effexor with Ultram it caused seizure-like activity. However, taken alone it may have done well. I'm not sure about the CFS and a rheumatologist. You could contact a rheumy and inquire if he/she would treat it and then move on from there. Best of luck lvfrogs. Take care.
Also remember, anytime you go high on a nutrient like folate you disrupt the balance the body needs of B vitamins, so you have to be careful to add other Bs to keep that balance. You don't know the half of it with Paxil and Effexor. An incompetent psychiatrist took me off Paxil incorrectly, and three years later I'm still a goner. No life left. Irony is, I went off it to try natural remedies, and they had the reverse effect after withdrawal.
Have come off cymbalta and lamictal, cymbalta withdrawal awful, put on effexor xr, great for deppressin not anxiety, now on 4th week paxil, not helping at all with deppression or anxiety. Can Paxil cause alcohol craving?, i used to drink 3 beer a nig but stopped was doing great, since paxil started again. On 4mg of klonopin which helps but makes me tired. Have been sitting in my char in pj,s most days, not doing much housework, have little energy, do force myself to gym though as it does help.
i have been on paxil twice before and it worked quite well (though almost impossible to withdraw from) so i asked my p-doc if we could add paxil to the effexor. he said it seemed like it could work and is starting me with 10mgs, eventually hitting 20mgs in five days. i asked about serotonin syndrome and he said it was unlikely. after speaking with a few psych friends and looking around on the web i have suspicions that this combo might be a bad idea.
Eventually the prozac was stopped completely and now for the past 18 months, I have been only on effexor(225 mg). I have done well with the effexor. The side effects haven't been that bad on the effexor. However, I too have experienced some minor withdrawal flu-like symptons if I forget a dose of effexor. As long as I am continuing to do well, my dr. plans for me to be on effexor another six months or so and then we will try to wean off to see how I do.
only), started me on Effexor, after only 1wk. of weaning off the Paxil. the side effects of the Effexor were bad, so weaned off of THAT for only another 1wk. I have been absolutely OFF, both mentally and physically. Have been completely off any psychotropic drugs for the past wk. I bagen getting worried, as I was having neurological (adverse) symptoms, as well as the horrible "rollercoaster-ride" mentally & emotionally!!
I had forgotten to get my script and I thought I should try to see if I could do without the Effexor. I have been diagnosed with Adult ADHD and depression which I probably have had all my life and am now going through menopause. It did take me awhile to find the right medication mix as I did react to some until this combination seemed good for me. This is my fifth day and after very little sleep I am very tired and like a zombie.
She made me promise not to hurt myself and I made an appointment with her. Then I had to see a psychiatrist who recommended Effexor. I went on and continued counseling sessions. After a few weeks I felt like I was totally "BACK". Felt great because I felt like "ME". 3 months into treatment my grandma who lived down the street from me shot and killed herself.
I'm only 19 with ADHD, depression/anxiety issues. I had been on Effexor XR 75 mg for 6 years and Paxil 20 mg for 4 years. My liver enzymes (ALT 120) were elevated and both psychiatrist and primary doctor agreed to discontinue these drugs. I was tapered off each drug one at a time over a 6 week period plus my Straterra 60mg for ADHD. It has now been 3 weeks since no further meds. I experienced severe withdrawals including: vomiting (first 3 days), nausea (for abt.
It's funny that you mention going off of Paxil to Effexor, because it looks like what I'll be replacing Effexor with is Paxil, in hopes that I do not run into the same drastics effects. Good luck.
- Have you ever had such cases and can we combine paxil and effexor? (i'm worried to stop paxil after 12 years) - Should i take the risk or changing? if any risk.
I had been taking Wellbutrin SR with Paxil for three and a half months (300mg of Wellbutrin SR + 5mg of Paxil in the morning, and 150mg of Wellbutrin SR in the evening). I was prescribed 37.5 mg of Effexor to replace the Paxil. 9 months ago when the depression started, I was only taking Paxil. I was upto 40mg a day and I didn't feel that it was working as much as it should, plus many many side effects (mainly sexual and weight gain).
I don't know what to do. I am now ay 40mg a day on paxil, with a 0.5mg when needed for Xanax, whch I don't take very often at all, but just when absolutely needed. Paxil did save my life, I believe that, but now, it is taking it from me with the weight gain. I am scared to come off because of the panic attacks and depresssion, and the physical pain that comes with them. I need help and I need answers on how to get this fixed and get my life back on track.
I weaned off effexor 37.5 mg and stopped taking it 10 days ago. Then I went on Paxil for 5 days it didn't sit well so I stopped it, I am now having horrible headaches, and I am very out of sorts. Is it possible to start withdrawal effects 10 days later?
I have personally experienced panic attacks with Effexor. I too take Cymbalta 30mg. As a nurse, I can tell you many antidepressants are trial and error. Some work better than others. I personally have tried all the SSRI and wound up with SSNRI to combat my panic attacks and major depression. I sure hope this helps and you feel better soon. Take one day at a time.
I have been on paxil for 4 yrs now and I lost my insurance and the cost for the meds are 40 bucks. Now I have been off my paxil for 4 days now and im miserable and I still have 2 days till I can go get my script. The zaps and irritability is whats really getting to me. Will 1 klonopin a day help with the withdrawals?
I would ask myself if there were any other changes or circumstances that could contribute other than the Paxil. If you cannot find any, then the likelihood of Paxil contributing to the weight gain is higher. Last, playing with any anti-depressant is like playing Russian Roulette (sp.) with your brain. Not a good idea. Take it from me, definately a person with experience in this area. If you believe the med is no longer helping, talk to your doc and devise a plan to wean.
that I have finally found a site that actually deals with paxil and the ill effects of withdrawal. I have been on paxil on and off for 30 years after being diagnosed with a chemical imbalance at 17. I am or at least was feeling well and I wanted to try discontinuing paxil to detoxify my body. I did do it gradually which I would advise everyone however even after being off of the pills completely for 3 weeks I still suffer from a sense of hightened response to noise or movement.
