I am on Day 5 of taking Effexor XR. I have struggled with anxiety for about over a year and I recently saw a doctor to discuss medication. I was very against medication at first but I figured I would go to discuss. I CLEARLY told the doctor that I did NOT want to gain weight. I just lost 30 lbs and I feel so great!
I use to be sIze 0 now I'm sizE 8 fluaxol injections,sertraline,zeldOx&litium any advise would be help full
Wellbutrin is for depression, not anxiety, and as such can be stimulating. Drugs like Effexor are for both, but all can cause weight gain. You won't know until you try. The least problematic are probably Prozac, and then Lexapro, but even Lexapro has been known to cause significant weight gain and Prozac isn't usually that great for anxiety, but who knows? They're weird, these drugs, and affect everyone differently.
You are asking if there is an anti-depressant that is the less likely to cause weight gain than Effexor. As you can see, Effexor is amongst the least likely to cause weight gain, and in fact, is known to contribute to weight loss. You may wish to try an alternative on the list above.

Have taken paxil, celexa, effexor, xanax, and lexapro through the years but experienced weight gain of at least 40 lbs. My OB/GYN helped wean me off the meds this past spring but within the last month I have again started experiencing severe anxiety with bouts of depression. Family doc started me on Trazadone which just made me feel like a zombie and shortly after switched me to Wellbutrin 150mg daily.
All I can say is, I wish I had this problem, especially if you are not ill. I swear I just look at food, and on goes a kilo or two. I put on 20 kilos in the 9 years since having my uterus removed, and have just recently had my ovaries removed, so I'm hoping it doesn't cause any more weight gain. Keep up your healthy diet, but maybe you can allow yourself a few more of lifes (fattening) little luxuries. Have some for me while you're at it.
After trying a few different anti-depressants for my migraines, my neurologist decided to try Effexor. Within a matter of few, I began to experience side effects, including weight gain. When I questioned my doctor about this, he felt it was unlikely that Effexor was the cause. So, I assumed it must be other meds I was on and continued to take it. Well, the side effects, including the weight gain worsened.
Wellbutrin is for depression, not anxiety. It can cause anxiety in somebody who suffers from it because it's designed to "charge up" a depressed person. Effexor, like all snris and ssris, can cause weight gain. Whether it will for you or not you won't know until you try it. If the Zoloft worked, well, it's hard to find a med that works.
So , I have been on celexa for about 5 years and went off that because of my crazy weight gain.. Went on Effexor for about 6 months and I am gaining more weight!!! I have cut my calories, cut my sugar , went to a Nutrisionist , ate exactly how I am supposed to, exercised everyday, cardio and weights .. I have always been skinny ..
My doctor has now taken me off the Avanza at night and prescribed 15mg Reductil to take with the Effexor in an effort to perk me up a bit and help with the weight.
My own research, the pharmacists concerns etc are making me think that this combination would not be advisable.
As my sugar is also starting to be a problem, I did suggest to my doctor that perhaps metaformin would be a better aid to assist with the weight issue.
I was wondering, at what dosage did you notice a gain or loss of weight? I've read about people either gaining or losing weight, but no one says what dosage they're on. I'm taking 25mg right now and the doc and I were talking of moving me to 50mg. Standing at a whopping 5ft, I of course worry about the weight gain.
My doctor also told me that most of his patients lose weight or maintain weight on Effexor. He said there are more issues with making sure he tells his patient to eat 3 meals a day. So far everything he has told is consistent with my results. Remember, when you get older your metabolism slows down…so being on this drug for years could just be that. Just take a look around you….the majority of people in this country are overweight and gain weight regularly.
There have been a lot of double blind controled studies involving weight loss or gain associated with SSRI medications and most of them have been proven not to effect the bodies metabolism.
Older tri-cyclic antidepressants and Tetracyclic antidepressant cause weight gain. It is proven and a well known side effect. Many mood stabilizers can also cause weight gain.
i am a worrier and get very wrapped up in potential problems, things, which cause my heart to race and feel as if it is in my throat--a few times a year it could send me spiraling down into a dark place --it won't lft for maybe hours or a day or two. I HAVE a dr's appt, just picking your brains here--also, i had an eating disorder and if he suggests meds, i do bnot want to gain weight-i'd like to stay the same--i heard wellbutrin is good for not gaining weight. THOUGHTS? thanks.
