Hi. I'm on tamoxifen so I can't take any meds which inhibit cyp2D6 enzymes. I've been on almost ALL SSRI ( Effexor, lexapro, celexa, nortriptyline, fetzima, & viibryd) & my depression worsens with them (suicidal thoughts, etc). The only one that has helped is remeron but every time I've had to return to remeron I gain weight. I'm usually 110-112 and eat very well & workout almost everyday.
Weird, I think you did the right thing, because Effexor works in the 2 different areas. I weaned down on Effexor to go over to Celexa, and once you're down to a low dose it's not so bad. You should still expect some withdrawal effects, like the spins and zaps, but going over to Zoloft, that drug will ease it up a bit. It's good to be vigilant with your meds and question anything, I think passivity with meds can be dangerous.
I take celexa and I love it. I have been taking for almost 8 years and it has worked beautifully for me. I take it at night as it does help with insomnia . I think you should do quite well on it.
This is a common side effect of antidepressants. If anxiety is the main problem, Effexor might be overly stimulating, so if it doesn't agree with him stopping quickly is best as it's a very hard drug to stop once you've been on it for awhile. Here's the thing -- when you find a drug that works for anxiety, that's not an easy thing, so sometimes you just have to work on the side effects.
My doctor put me all the way up to 150 mg of effexor and it made me worse. I've only tried xanax once recreationally so I don't really know the side effects. But my doctor reduced me to 37.5 mg of effexor and 20 mg of celexa (citalopram) plus 5 mg twice a day of clonazepam.
I have found that the clonazepam has helped a lot, although I have been feeling extremely tired. But at least I don't have a constant knot in my stomach or get panic attacks.
What are your opinions? Did the doctor made a bad choice? Has anyone here ever been on Celexa and Effexor at the same time?
UPDATE: I just woke up after being asleep for about six hours and have the worst headache. I took my first dose of Effexor XR (37.5) 4 hours before bed time and then right before going to sleep I took 50 mg of Trazodone as I always do, there must be some type of bad interaction between these two.
My blood pressure has been giving me a fit lately, and my doctor noticed where Effexor can cause higher blood pressures. Today, he switched me from Effexor to Celexa, which is good because I was never completely happy with Effexor anyway. However, he said that I can stop the Effexor cold turkey and go straight to the Celexa. Is this correct? I always thought you had to taper off Effexor, and I know how badly it affects me if I even miss a single dose.
no, i went several months trying natural things like 5htp and omega oils. i do think it's much easier going from one antidepressant to another. i went from paxil to effexor with no problems, now i'm back on paxil. if you start the celexa then the withdrawal will probably go away. for me effexor was the worse antidepressant i've ever taken. if you take celexa i hope it works for you. take care.
At the same time that this was switched, I was also taken off of Celexa (10mg daily) which was being used as an add-on treatment for the Effexor. We stopped the Celexa due to severe bruising and nose bleeds. Is it possible that I just having withdrawal from the Celexa or can it be the Generic Effexor. At this point in time I do not feel that I am incontrol and I do not feel "safe" being on my own. Any insight would be appreciated.
Had sexual side effects and gained some weight but I am not positive is from the Lexapro but I think may be. The Dr gave me Effexor which knocked me out for 3 days, slept 36 hours straight, then Celexa which I broke out in a rash all over my body from. He tried Wellbutrin but that did nothing. I didn't lose weight on it like some people do.

How long were you on celexa and zoloft? I'm not on Effexor - I take zoloft myself. And I can tell you that first starting and when I upped, side effects always crept up on me after the first week or two.
Have you discussed your symptoms with your prescriber? Side effects with increased dosage are one thing, but them lasting to the degree you're describing is something I would ask him/her about.
I am titrating down off celexa while using the Effexor but find my self having panic attacks and bursting into tears and unable to calm myself. I have Ativan but an needing 2 mg now instead of the .5 or maybe 1 mg that I needed before. I know its been a short period of time, but will this get better? Its affecting my work, my kids, my father and my significant other. They are all being supportive but I don't want to get to the breaking point for them.
Hello, I'm in hell. I've been off of Effexor for 7 days now, at least. The withdrawal effects are beyond horrific. I feel extremely agitated and angry most of the time, hopeless, Like I should committ suicide so I don't put my family through the hell of having me in there life. I know these are not normal thoughts and I'm not going to kill myself I just need help.
This summer my ex-husband helped me to aquire another medication. Celexa which was given to me by th ER doctor. My regular doctor kept me on effexor, buspar, and celexa with ativan as needed. These were the medications that I've taken for roughly 7 months now. Went to my doctor for a prescription refill on my Effexor and now all of a sudden he WON'T fill it. I've GONE COLD TURKEY!!! I was able to find some 75 mg tablets of effexor but only 3 days. So here I come cold turkey!
I will only add one thing to Ryan's otherwise very good post. People do have different reactions to different drugs, even to Celexa and Lexapro or Pristiq and Effexor. While it's true the companies are trying to keep a patented product in their lineup, Lexapro seems to have fewer side effects than Celexa, but many people do find one or the other works better. Same probably with Pristiq and Effexor. But to prescribe both at once is insane.
I stopped taking Effexor then Celexa. I took Effexor for three to four years. The medication is too expensive so i asked my doctor to switch my medication to something cheaper. He switch me to Celexa. One thing lead to another I ran out of Celexa. I am so busy at work. I decided I did not have time for the doctor. So I stopped taking medications about three weeks ago. Well, I feel like I am losing it. Obviously this "losing it" feeling must be from going cold turkey.
I am supposed to switch from celexa to effexor xr I have no sex drive and have gained 65 very unwanted lbs this last year since quiting crystal meth and two major surgeries after four months smoke free I started again. I took effexor on the past and it worked for me I did have flu like symptoms when I ct from it. Did I read the tread wrong are ADs addictive?
