i think that with drugs like effexor, the only way to lose the weight you gain from them is to go off of them ( i am not suggesting that, esp if it helps you to feel better)- just saying that from what ive heard, as long as they are in your body, they alter your metabolism and make it super slow, making it nearly impossible to lose weight and a sure way to gain weight. i have heard that in some cases they alter your metabolism permanantly, but i am skeptical of that.
I have gained a tremendous amount of weight taking this drug. At 55, I am trying to eat clean, exercise, lose weight and get in better physical condition. I have wanted to stop taking this drug but just like all of you the side effects were so bad I kept going back on them after usually one to two days. My doctor told me I must need the medication if I was having such severe withdraw. So, I continued the meds.
I have tried over 9 meds..nothing made me gain weight like Effexor...(14lbs) but surprisingly Zoloft which is known to make you gain weight did NOT make me gain weight. It is to do with the SSRI's they CAN effect the way your liver metabolizes fats ie the enzymes get compromised somehow in SOME people. Liver cannot metabolize correctly and fat gets deposited in your belly, omemtum area!

My doctor also told me that most of his patients lose weight or maintain weight on Effexor. He said there are more issues with making sure he tells his patient to eat 3 meals a day. So far everything he has told is consistent with my results. Remember, when you get older your metabolism slows down…so being on this drug for years could just be that. Just take a look around you….the majority of people in this country are overweight and gain weight regularly.
I have had trouble maintaining my weight since menopause. I lose weight very easily now. Over the last couple of years I have had a CT, MRI, and all sorts of bloodwork. My doctor is convinced it is just one of those things. Said she has a handful of patients that have the same thing after menopause. I take effexor for hot flashes, cholesterol medication and advair. I can't imagine any of them making me lose weight so easily. I was never heavy, but watched what I ate.
Effexor is not likely to make you gain major weight, especially with your routine. It should help you not worry about your weight. If it's not helping or if you obsess even more or lose weight, you should check with your doctor.
You should not drink alcohol with it, and you can't just skip your pill so you can drink that day--it doesn't work that way.

I dont want to get it if its going to hender my weight loss. He told me it helped people lose weight. From what I see on line that is not what people say. PLEASE give me your opinion.

My doctor has now taken me off the Avanza at night and prescribed 15mg Reductil to take with the Effexor in an effort to perk me up a bit and help with the weight.
My own research, the pharmacists concerns etc are making me think that this combination would not be advisable.
As my sugar is also starting to be a problem, I did suggest to my doctor that perhaps metaformin would be a better aid to assist with the weight issue.
I have been taking Paxil for PTSD for several years. It has also markedly helped with my fibromyalgia , irritable bowel syndrome, and urinary incontinence.. When I first started taking it, it caused me to lose 27 pounds. I have heard from doctors that after a while the Paxil can "turn on you" and start causing the same symptoms it was alleviating, such as weight gain, anxiety, etc., as well as new symptoms.
