Effexor and melatonin

Common Questions and Answers about Effexor and melatonin

1042487_tn?1275283499 I would do more research on that first. Melotonin acts as kind of a natural sleep aid. It does this in part by effecting Serotonin. I know what your thinking...."but Cymbalta is an SNRI not SSRI." Unfortunatly SNRI drugs like Cymbalta and effexor also effect Serotonin Reuptake Inhibition just the same as an SSRI. Only difference being that they also effect Norepheneperine too. I think it's too risky. To take Melotonin with Cymbalta could result is Serotonin syndrome.
Avatar_n_tn Namaste, melatonin is a hormone made by a part of the brain called the pineal (say: "pin-ee-all") gland. melatonin may help our bodies know when it's time to go to sleep and when it's time to wake up. melatonin can be used to treat insomnia (difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep). Some people who have taken melatonin have reported sleepiness, headache, a "heavy-head" feeling, stomach discomfort, depression or feeling hungover.
Avatar_f_tn I went off of effexor CT and it was a huge mistake. You should wean off of it. I didn't realize it at the time. I was really naive and didn't realize that all I needed to do was slowly taper instead of going CT. I almost went to the ER but my daughter was young and I had no one to take care of her. I had brain zaps really bad. Have you had those?
Avatar_f_tn This seems to be the question that comes up most on this forum - withdraw from effexor. Have a read and see if you find any answers there. I was on anti-depressants during my menopause in my 40s. I was on HRT for 13 years. Took both at same time with no ill effects. I have stopped my medication a number of times, and depression has always come back, usually within a few months. The longest I went was a year. Different for different people. Keep in touch.
Avatar_f_tn Ok so I am away with my son and took my first dose of effexor. The doc said take before bed. It is 1 am and I am in a strange place and feeling like a crzy person. Everyone is slleping and I am awake with a buzzing sick to my stomach feeling. Is this normal. I just want some sleep and some peace. Anyone have any experience with this med????
Avatar_n_tn I've been taking effexor for about 2 years and am weaning off the medication right now. Actually I should just say I am stoping the medication cold turkey, since I am just not taking any pills at all each day. Yes, there are side effects. Are the side effects so severe that a person cannot tolerate them? Absolutely not. You need to tough it out, get this drug out of your system, and start exercising 5 times a week, especially cardiovascular exercise.
1700643_tn?1348985292 or more on occasion so dnt know.Havent taken any nite aid n over a week and gotten no sleep.OH if u take melatonin(other vitamins too omega 3 a couple more others)I got these free from walgreens this week.If u have the rewards card these go from$14.99(100of them)to$4then u get a$4off any purchase ticket. They have that w/ a lot of stuff right now n the healh section&through the store.
Avatar_n_tn 1st week on Zoloft, with no effexor, there were some withdrawals, but minimal and they passed quickly. 2 days now off everything and I feel fine. The final question will be once the Zoloft is out of my system in a few days. FYI…my physician, who seems to be experienced and knowledgeable with the effexor, informed me that even if I tried to taper down, I would go through withdrawals. He said “why go through it? Take the Zoloft for 10 days.” Bear in mind, I was only on 150 mg.'s for 6 mo.
Avatar_m_tn SO I DECIDED TO GO BACK and HE ACTUALLY GAVE ME 10MG OF PROZAC TO OFFSET THE WITHRAWL FROM THE effexor and IT WORKED!. HE TOLD ME TO TAKE ONE DAY OF 37.5 effexor, and 10MG OF PROZAC. THEN FOR 3-5 DAYS TAKE JUST THE 10MG OF PROZAC. I FELT A LITTLE SICK STILL GETTING OFF THE effexor WITH THE PROZAC BUT IT WAS NOT NEARLY AS BAD. THE REASON HE GAVE THE PROZAC TO OFFSET THE effexor SIDE EFFECTS IS BECAUSE PROZAC HAS A MUCH LONGER HALF LIFE THAN effexor.
Avatar_f_tn I have been taking effexor and Hydro....Trazadone for several years. I was away for the weekend and forgot to bring my Trazadone with me and my friend suggested I go to a health food shop to see if they had something to help me sleep. I was recommended Magnesium and 5HTP - to be taken together which I started taking a few days ago. Today I started feeling very depressed and couldn't figure out why until I spoke to a friend who said I shouldn't be combing 5HTP and anti-depressants.
Avatar_m_tn Hi I came off effexor afetr nine and a half years and went cold turkey GP's fault so I know how ill you are !! I got a private Dr who deals in withdrawal to treat the symptoms so he gave me 40 mg's of propananol I took it every morning to stop the palps he also gave me clonidine I take 150 mg's every night they give it to people coming off drugs.
Avatar_f_tn effexor with draw was the worse withdrawl i ever went through. I was on 200mg and they look me off cold turkey. It took me a good 3 to 6 weeks to feel better. R they switching you to something else?
Avatar_f_tn Maybe I am going through withdrawal symptoms too from effexor too. I was on effexor and Lyrica. effexor for depression but also for neuropathy pain in my fee also. It seemed the Lyrica and effexor combined worked for the pain, I went to a neurologist and he took me off the Lyrica, which made me gain 60lbs! lol... and put me on Zonisamide. It has been great for my pain. But now that aI have been on it awhile I am feeling sick to my stomach every morning and my head feels fuzzy.
Avatar_f_tn I'm trying to detox from effexor after being on it for several years with the last 7 months at 150 mg. After getting down to 37.5 every other day and feeling okay I stopped and started my new prescription, Wellbutrin-- well, for two days now I'm nauseous, shaky, hot/cold sweats, feel like my eyes are vibrating somewhat when I make too fast of motion with my head. It's as if I have symptoms of Vertigo and can't fix it.
Avatar_n_tn I just need to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. At the highest point I was taking 3 drugs; 3mg Clonazepam, 60mg Remeron and effexor. I still felt horrible. So the only thing that make sense is to stop taking these meds tappering off them slowly.
1128565_tn?1316724743 Hi All Thought I was going to get away with symptoms of insomnia from withdrawal as I am taking Dolsulipin which has a sedative effect. But oh no symptoms have changed and it rears it's ugly head and I carn't sleep. Will increasing clonidine from 100 mg's to 200 mg's help me to sleep ? I also believe that Nytol and Benadryl can help with the insomnia has anyone got any advice ? Has anyone please got any advice how to cope with it, I don't know wether to get some melatonin to help me.
Avatar_m_tn i'm sorry you are still feeling bad. I am just under 2 weeks off effexor and i feel like i am losing my mind. But i have heard thats expected. But a year off and you are still struggling? At this point, if I do start feeling better soon, I may need to get on something else too, but It will not be effexor again. There are many other ones out there if you think u need one, but I personally wouldn't get back on effexor. Did you have a hard time getting off it?
Avatar_m_tn He was going to prescribe me Welbutrin, but I had been on that in the past and it didn't work so instead he prescribed the effexor. When I picked up the effexor at my pharmacy the pharmacist was surprised that he prescribed me effexor in combination with the Celexa, he said they are too similar and Welbutrin would have been a better choice because they would compliment each other rather than doubling up on similar meds that could cause saratonin syndrome. What are your opinions?
Avatar_m_tn Hi there, Ive been reading alot on this site lately to try and figure out what is going on with me, and dont quite understand it. I've been on effexor xr for about 3-4 years, and recently have come off it completely. I tappered off slowly, and encountered some problems along the way, but not too bad for the most part. I've now been completely off the effexor for 30 days now.
Avatar_n_tn I am on 150 mg effexor XR and have started taking 50 mg 5-htp twice daily as well since the 150 mg effexor was not completely helping. I have noticed an reduced libido, specially ejaculation poblems. Can 5-htp cause this? I am planning on tapering effexor completely and use 5-htp in the near future. I also take klonopin and buspar. Any suggestions, comments will be really appreciated.
372880_tn?1332883087 Sub takes a little longer to feel better than detox from regular opiates because of it's half life. If you just hang in there, get some exercise and rest, and give the effexor some time to work, I bet you will be feeling better in no time!!! : )) Good luck!
Avatar_n_tn Two things you can try for the sleep problem -- melatonin and Calm's Forte. You can find them in a good health food store. Good luck.
Avatar_n_tn I just discontinued taking effexor XR and it was the most difficult and painful thing I have ever done! The side effects for me were: increased depression, confusion, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, and on and on and on... I am so angry that the drug company (Wyeth) and the doctor didn't know what I was talking about! How can they not know? They do clinical trials. Just ridiculous! I signed the petition to have it reviewed by the FDA (I was about # 4,500, so I know I'm not alone).
Avatar_n_tn When the anxiety gets mr really me wound up, I have to resort to valium and melatonin and even pain killers. Please tell me I won't have these symptoms the rest of my life. I am getting very discouraged. I had a blood workup done and all came back normal... for the love of god why don't I feel normal?
Avatar_n_tn I've been taking a all natural drink now for about a year and feel great. Here comes the problem I took myself off the effexor and I'm getting dizzing, have trouble foucusing on things to the point I shouldn't drive. I called the Doctor was told it can't be the effexor but as soon has I take a pill with in a hour or two problems go away so I know it is the pill.
Avatar_n_tn i have been on 225 of effexor and it has helped me alot but the weight gain has been horrible. i crave carbs and feel hungry alot. but i tried goin off the effexor and had bad bad withdrawls. i took my time too. any ideas?
Avatar_m_tn I tapered off of effexor without starting another antidepressant. It took me two months and was the hardest med I've ever stopped. All of you that are trying to do this hang in there. It can be done.
Avatar_m_tn Let him know what's been going on? It's probably too late in the game to restart the effexor and then start a taper, but there most definitely would be some things your doctor could recommend to help ease some of these symptoms. I really recommend making an appointment to see your doctor and discuss the options. The other thing...let me reassure you, for one, no, you didnt damage your brain. Your symptoms are caused by your body trying to readjust without the medication.
Avatar_n_tn i am on effexor XR and i havent had any bad side effects. I started out on 37.5mg a day and after a week moved to 75 mg a day... the only rough day i had was my 1st day on 75 mg. i felt very drugged.. but i adjusted rather quickly..
Avatar_m_tn Even as I write this I feel a sense of dread, anxiety and panic, for no reason that I know of. Did quitting the effexor the way I did, and the re-start taking it screw with my mind? and if so, can this be reversed? I have been like this for almost a month now and I can't stand it anymore, I am willing to try and medicine that will make this stop.
