Common Questions and Answers about Effects of smoking for 20 years

smoking

Avatar f tn I'm 31 years old and have been smoking for about 20 years. I've finally decided to give it up. For once I'm doing something for me. I have 3 cigarettes left and that's it.....I'm done. I'm tired of depending on them, having to take them where ever I go, not to mention the wasted money.
Avatar f tn Congratulations :) I was a smoker too, and I smoked for 6-7 years, I tried and tried to stop smoking but I just couldn't do it! I tried everything but nothing seemed to work, then 5 weeks ago I found out I was pregnant! After nearly two years of trying for a baby I was overwhelmed! I still continued to smoke for a couple of days, but only a couple of puffs from my husbands cigarette 2-3 times a day, then I looked online about the effects off smoking whilst pregnant and quit straight away!
Avatar f tn I'm 20 weeks today and I was so stressed last night so I asked my partner for half of his cigarette. I haven't smoked since I was 6 weeks pregnant and I'm freaking out that I've done something to the baby because he hasn't moved since I had that cigarette.. Can it harm the baby if i only had half and thats all i was planning on having. This is my first and I'm freaking out in case he's not alright..
Avatar m tn I would suggest not smoking cannibus (weed). If it isn't helping you, why smoke it? Please don't get me wrong, I am a firm believer in the medicinal value of weed, but if you aren't able to tolerate the effects, then stay away from it, please. You also may have smoked weed that was sprayed with a pesticide. You are so young...unless you have chronic pain or cancer, don't smoke weed. Its obviously not helping you. And...yes...I am a mother of 2 young adults in their 20's.
Avatar n tn There is not much standardized research done on this due to the illegal nature of marijuana. You can find MANY websites on the effects of cannibis and blood sugar, though and I am surprised you are on this one asking questions. Do you really think someone is gonna get on this site and admit to breaking the law????? Please!
1010685 tn?1295032636 I am trying to quit smoking anyway and took it for a while about ten years ago for depression with no bad side effects. I know SSRIs are probably better for anxiety, but I hate the sexual side effects. I also considered ativan, but since my mood swings are so intermittent and short-lived, I don't know if they would kick in in time to help.
Avatar n tn I am a 24 year old male, a school drop-out, and DAFNE graduate, who was diagnosed with IDDM at 9 months of age, although was ill from about 3 months. I have been smoking cannabis for 6 years as of this month and started out recreationally, but now use it to help control my diabetes and balance out my very up-and-down depression (diagnosed at 13 years), as well as for a recreational relaxant.
335728 tn?1331414412 Hi, Kiddo! Yep, I talked about this a year and a half ago when I came across another study from Great Britain that pretty conclusively showed the same thing. I try not to keep shoving in people's faces, but it is an important thing that some of us can do to prevent more rapid deterioration. It has been clear for many years that smoking increases one's chances of developing MS. But, now it is even clearer that smoking may worsen your course. Ooops!
1316053 tn?1279509497 Hi everyone, I tried taking CHAMPIX (not sure if this is the same - I am from Australia) I didn't finish all of the tablets, due to the side affects, but wish I did, as I am smoking again. I had a funny feeling in the head, and SEVERE bloating, and I couldn't handle it anymore, as I have IBS, and that is bad enough.
1738455 tn?1310867954 I've been a smoker for 20 years now... and 26 days ago, I just quit smoking "cold turkey" do I expect any side-effects on the abrupt stoppage? I am regularly exercising (Bike and run) almost everyday and I am on a diet too when I quit the cigarettes... Meanwhile, just an information for those who would like to quit: "The only way that I found effective for me to quit smoking is the Diet... after meticulously eating only healthy foods...
Avatar f tn It was hard, ive read it takes around a month of no smoking for cravings to subside, also meditation is also very good. Very healthy for your mind too. Just find a quiet spot, it helps a lot with stress and just focus on your breathing and just get lost in it. Good luck i hope this helps!
1013194 tn?1296459481 I wonder if you read through the archives regarding long term use of nicorette? I personally know a few who have been chewing and are addicted to it. One has been chewing now for 12 years and suffered his second heart attack : ( His doctor is convinced it's because of his prolonged nicotine intake, even though its through the gum. Here is a link to someone elses candid talk about long term use: http://www.medhelp.
Avatar n tn Hi I don't know I am just a lay person but I would be cautious about using any sleep medication with untreated sleep apnea. I wonder if your symptoms are the result of the sleep apnea vs the medication. Disturbed sleep can leave you feeling tired and low oxygen saturation levels could explain poor memory. I don't know of any long-term effects of Remeron. I have read that increased blood fats could pose a risk for some people though. This is said to be rare.
Avatar m tn You are not going to do permanent damage to your brain from a couple nights of drinking and smoking pot. I don't mean to encourage doing things that have some risk of creating dependency, but the actions of cannabis are temporary-- as are most of the effects of alcohol-- provided you aren't drinking to the point of alcohol toxicity (for example, drinking so much that you pass out, repeatedly).
Avatar m tn Complications will set in generally following the 20 year rule - 20 years from diagnosis some form of complication will set in. Hope he is regularly screened by a doctor and signs of complications are caught early. That also will be a time his sense of immortality will be tested and a chance for his attitude to change and for him to quit. It is normal for all young people to feel immortal and diabetics are no different.
Avatar f tn I have been trying to quit smoking for months now and the free patches i got from the ny state quit smoking place do not seem to help. I have lost wieght and dont want to gain it back but my health is important. Is there any kind of like strong tasting straws or anything anyone can suggest that might help.
1727149 tn?1314159536 Is a MD prescribing these meds? Wellbutrin only worked for me when I tried to quit smoking like 7 years ago. (I am not a doctor so please don't take this as official advice).
Avatar m tn Did you not read what I wrote, "Do not use accutane (a medicine prescribed for severe acne that has been associated with causing UC)." Accutane has been known to cause UC. The medical community is only now starting to realize the role that bacteria plays in this disease. And yes, an imbalance of fecal bacteria in the colon can cause UC. I took antibiotics for some 20+ years for skin inflammations.
Avatar n tn The severity of the difference would also be dependant on the length of your Herceptin treatment. Oncologists monitor these side effects very closely and I'm sure your Onc. will take this into consideration and discuss the risks of continuing your treatment. The longer the treatment the less the incidence of heart damage but each case is different. Regards ....
Avatar m tn Long term effects of smoking 1 year in your very early 20's. Serious? No Worries. Glad you stopped. Take care of yourself and you should be fine. Lung Cancer is a crap shoot anyway. Chris Reeves' wife died of it and never smoked. Some folks smoke there whole life and no problem. Your biggest problem with smoking that goes unspoken of usually is COPD, and its a serious problem. Good Job for quitting. You will be better off for it.
Avatar n tn I quit smoking this morning after 21 years of over a pack/day. Been on the patch since I woke up, it's now mid-afternoon and I have a fever and I already passed out on my lunch for almost an hour. I feel like I have the flu, I'm all bloated and I feel pukey and I have a really bad headache and I'm all weak-ish, could be a coincidental flu, but I think it's probably really really bad withdrawls.
Avatar f tn ve only smoked a couple of cigarettes and you can reverse the effects if you quit. Good for you for being concerned about it! Be tough and stop smoking now!
