Avatar f tn The types of liver disease covered herein are chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, alcoholic liver disease (ALD), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), end-stage liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT).
Avatar m tn Statins have also been shown to be much safer for the liver than originally thought. In fact, they are now used to treat liver disease as patients with damaged livers have shown increased liver function on statins. So much so that the FDA is considering removing liver damage from the list of side effects. You have a greater chance of liver damage by taking Acetaminophen than you do from a statin. Thanks for asking, I hope this helps.
Avatar m tn I agree with Sir_Osis - he stomach could be drained which would provide a lot of relief from discomfort. There are drugs that are used with a patient with ascites and edema - diuretics. Here is an excerpt from: http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec10/ch135/ch135e.html "......Treatment The basic treatment for ascites is bed rest and a salt-restricted diet, usually combined with drugs called diuretics, which make the kidneys excrete more water into the urine.
Avatar f tn Who can tell me about fatty liver disease? Is it staged? Is it serious? Are there treatments? I was just diagnosed with this from my liver biopsy. I don't have afollow up for another 4 weeks and I'm nervous. Thanks Anyone!

My guess if it was possible you would have to meet the conditions.
1084115 tn?1385228589 For patients with advanced liver disease the metabolism of many drugs that are processed in the liver is problematic. This can cause many drugs to not be properly removed from the body so that drug blood levels can increase and it can take days to be removed from the body. So it is not just toxicity that is the problem with drugs for cirrhotics. Many drugs are problematic for those will advanced cirrhosis.
Avatar m tn Your liver function has not been altered by your liver disease yet. If you become stage 4 (cirrhosis) then you will have to modify what drugs you can take because the liver is no longer able to process drugs in a normal manner. Tramadol is an synthetic opiate and should not be taken for "mild" pain. If you are close to or stage 4, Tylenol is the drug of choice for cirrhotics as long as you limit dosing to 2 grams per day and and don't mix it with alcohol.
Avatar f tn Welcom to the forum. I also have Stage 3 fibrosis. I was one of those people who didn't treat early on as I kept waiting for something better. My recommendation is to work with a Hepatologist who is well versed in treatment and keeps up with what is going on in this battle to cure Hep C. At Stage 3, you want to treat sooner so that your liver damage is arrested. The folks on this site are an amazing source of knowledge and support.
Avatar f tn So I think that a 7 day course of Monistat cream would be safe for use in early Candida infection in a person with liver disease (provided the person is not having decompensated liver disease). Other effective drugs like amphotericin B and Echinocandins are injectables and are used in cases who do not respond and in patients with decompensated liver disease. These have minimal liver side effects but are costly.
Avatar n tn If you didn't have liver disease while taking drugs and drinking, your liver should 'improve' as toxins are no longer part of your lifestyle.
Avatar f tn A number of prescription drugs, including those used to treat HIV, can also stress the liver. Acetaminophen can be very toxic to the liver. Taking it and alcohol together can cause severe liver damage. If you have liver disease, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), like Advil (ibuprofen) can also be dangerous to take. Aspirin should also be taken with care because it can lower a person's platelet count. People with liver disease often experience a swelling of the spleen.
Avatar m tn Rifampin, a hepatic enzyme inducer, is effective for the pruritus of cholestasis, but caution should be used in patients with preexisting liver disease because of possible hepatotoxicity. Butorphanol has also been shown to be effective in suppressing cholestatic pruritus. Zoloft (Sertraline), an antidepressant often prescribed to people with hepatitis C, is also effective in reducing the itching caused by cholestatis http://hcvadvocate.org/hepatitis/factsheets_pdf/pruritus.
Avatar f tn is liver disease the same as hepc, if not what can be done for stag3 4 liver disease. I also have something that does not work with my blood it does not clot good at all.
Avatar n tn many drugs are available for hepatitis B and work 100% cases when combined for the hardest cases which are only 10% so while you can stop hepatitis and stop liver damage 100% eradication of the virus is difficult (liver disease and virus are not the same thing and you can have virus and no illness) so 95-98% of adults clear hbv, about 5% carry hbv perfectly healthy and about 5% have hepatitis and liver damage, so it is important to know if you are in the 5% with hepatitis or just inactive viru
Avatar m tn Liver enzymes are very sensitive and can elevate for both temporary insignificant health issues or be an indicator of a significant health condition. High levels of AST alone do not suggest liver disease; a notable exception is Wilson's disease (rare). Besides an elevated ALT, your other labs are within normal range. Liver enzyme levels must be used with other blood tests, examination, and medical history.
Avatar n tn You need a liver biopsy to determine the the condition of your liver. Hepc causes fibrosis of the liver which left untreated can develop into cirrhosis. I had an endoscopy done to determine if any of my other organs were effected. If there are enlarged veins in the stomach called varices an endoscopy will detect this. Your doctor does not know without a biopsy whether the medications will not be good for you.
Avatar f tn I posted this on two other forums, but I haven't had much response. I"m currently TTC. My DH was diagnosed with Crohn's disease at age 18. At the time, children were not in his vocabulary, and he was started on a medication. The medication is Purinethol. I'm an RN, and like to know about his medications. Well, when I looked up this medication, it is listed as a chemotherapy medication, and is also used to treat Leukemia.
Avatar n tn Gamma GT or Gamma-glytamyl transpeptidase (GGT) is an enzyme found mainly in the liver and is normally present in low levels in the blood. This test is used to detect diseases of the liver or bile ducts. Elevated GGT levels may be due to liver disease, congestive heart failure, alcohol, and many prescription and non prescription drugs.
Avatar m tn Why is there not more awareness for this terrible disease? It has affected my husbands liver. He now has cirrhosis and needs a liver transplant. He can't tolerate prednisone very well. What other drugs could be used? Are there any Sarcoidosis doctors in the Cleveland Ohio area?
