Common Questions and Answers about Drugs during a pregnancy

drug

5624774 tn?1374284525 Everytime I see someone post about using drugs while pregnant, several people usually comment about drugs showing up in the baby's first poop (starts with an "m". I don't know how to spell it lol). Do they test every single baby when they are born or just if they suspect drug use? I'm honestly just curious. I've never used drugs or even smoked a cigarette in my life. So they test for drugs and alcohol? And how far back does it show?
Avatar f tn Most girls don't stop during their pregnancy.
Avatar f tn My doctor gave me a list of approved medicines, however it says to avoid during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Here are a few of the items on the list. Cough/Cold: Robitussin (cough), Sucrets and Vick's Throat Lozenges Its says do not take "SA' (Sustained action) forms of these drugs or the "Multi-symptom" forms of these drugs.

667829 tn?1297978123 A, B, C, D, and X. Category A is the safest, while drugs in Category X are unsafe for women who are pregnant or could become pregnant. There are not many Category A drugs, says Dr. Lund. "Prenatal vitamins are not even Category A, because if you overdose on them, they cause problems." But there are Category A drugs available for conditions such as nausea and vomiting, thyroid disorders, and gestational diabetes.
20922415 tn?1661860103 During the reproductive years, the pituitary gland in the brain generates hormones (follicle-stimulating hormone [FSH] and luteinizing hormone [LH]) that cause a new egg to mature and be released from its ovarian follicle each month. As the follicle develops, it produces the sex hormones estrogen and progesterone, which thicken the lining of the uterus called the endometrium.
5464742 tn?1368519546 My sister is 24wks pregnant, i already have her 10yr old daughter i adopted due to drugs. Now at 24wks she smoked crack 1x. I'm worried that even though she won't do it again it will show up in something and she'll get a cps case where i'll adopt this child too. If she doesn't do any drugs from this point on and her system is clean should she be ok at delivery? It shouldn't b in babys system by delivery if she stays clean as she's only 24 wks now????
Avatar f tn If you have health conditions like aspirin allergy or kidney stones, check with a doctor before using cranberry for a health condition. Sweetened cranberry drinks can be high in calories and high-fructose corn syrup, and thus may be inadvisable for people with diabetes or weight problems. Interactions. If you take any drugs regularly, talk to your doctor before you start using cranberry supplements.
541196 tn?1293552936 Ok I just googled "Anti-depressants during pregnancy" and here are two addresses for you with some interesting discussion: http://www.****.*** and http://www.****.***. Hope this gives you the info you need, but I would be talking to your GP about it.
Avatar n tn Also hospitals wont drug test a baby unless they feel it is necessary (they think the mom is a junkie). I do think that your friend should also consider some drug counseling as meth is a highly addictive substance. I am very scared for this baby that your friend may relapse.
Avatar f tn this time also rashes are bad specially during night time...i am now taking zyrtec 5mg daily one dose....had done a ultrasound during 5th week but there was no heart beat....Dr said everything is fine for heart beat we have to repeat the scan after 2 weeks.....he had also prescribe me dupashtone but after searching the forum i had not taken it as no one has written good about it.....i am now very much worried as we desperately need this baby....
Avatar f tn I am someone who used to drink 2 glasses of wine every night, and boy, do i miss that! I have abstained from alcohol during this pregnancy, and even more so now i have gestational diabetes, but i did have a small glass of bubbly christmas eve, and new years eve. I don't believe that can do harm, but any doctor will tell you there is no safe limit, and its better to avoid it.
Avatar f tn t find a lot of information online on treatment during pregnancy, but she told me there has been studies and it's safe. The other thing that I'm scared about is breastfeeding after giving birth. I am told that it is okay to breastfeed even if you are HBV positive. My concern is this; I did some research and found that it is not good to stop medication, which is what I thought I would do after giving birth so that I can breastfeed.
Avatar f tn I'm not condoning any type of drug use during pregnancy but I will say when I was pregnant with my first child I was extremely sick with "morning sickness" I was in and out of the hospital nonstop. My ob dr finally told me to try smoking a little bit of weed for the naseua Meaning not to smoke it to get high just to help the sickness. Which thankfully my sickness stopped before I had to try it.
12627171 tn?1426339878 That is so sad. I was a smoker before I got pregnant and I felt bad when I found out I was pregnant at 3 weeks and was still smoking. I couldn't imagine doing any type of drugs during pregnancy. I hope she gets help and the baby is healthy. I'm sorry your stuck trying to clean her mess. But she does have to want to quit and I see what meth does to a grown person I couldn't even think about what it's doing to that sweet helpless baby. I'm sad for her!
Avatar n tn s the nature of depression and anxiety it is a medical condition not just a poor attitude. I think it makes you a very strong person to treat your symptoms instead of try and ignore them. Many people just ignore the until their life falls apart. Wishing you all the best!
665370 tn?1237084366 the first two are fatal, no matter what, the spina bifida is a serious defect that could have long term, mostly likely fatal, effects on the child. These are just a few of the things that could happen during a pregnancy. I found the most helpful research was googling things like "seroquel and pregnancy" "lamictal and pregnancy". The results are heart wrenching.
Avatar f tn t take it I have post nasal drip which drains into my stomach and makes me nauseous. Has anyone taken this before during pregnancy and had a healthy baby? And if you didn't take loratadine but have allergies (mine is to my cats, dust mites and we don't allow the cats in our bedroom) what did you do to manage ur allergysymtoms while pregnant? thanks.
Avatar f tn It could be a combo of the depression and pregnancy. I would definitely talk to the dr. I do know that st. James wart (the OTC herbal) is a no no at this point. So I would ask about other herbs before you try those. But I have heard women say they had good results from the sun lamp treatment.
Avatar f tn I had a friend smoke throughout her entire pregnancy as well however, I wouldn't recommend it at all. To me it's not worth the risk. My friend was paranoid throughout her pregnancy but didn't stop. I'm not judging anyone but personally if you will put your child at risk then you aren't ready to be a parent, this is coming from a woman who had her first child at 17.
Avatar f tn The drugs that normally would be prescribed to anyone coming off of opiates (valium, xanax, klonopin etc.) are EXTREMELY UNSAFE at any time during your pregnancy. They are all a category X and can and most likely will cause defects or brain activity reduction. So you need to make sure that when you wean that you do it slowly and carefully so that your body does not go through too much stress.
