Common Questions and Answers about Drug addiction cycle

Avatar f tn I have been dealing with addiction for over ten years now. Not with just one drug, but with several. I started with Xanax and other nerve pills in high school, then after I quit abusing those, I began my addiction to cocaine. After a short while of living clean, I found crack cocaine and was addicted to that for over 3 years. I once again became clean and now I have found myself abusing codeine and oxycodone. The crack cocaine has also made another appearance in my life, recently.
Avatar f tn I guess I'm asking anyone who feels they are addicted to Ambien to let me know what they're experiencing. As I said before-I know what physical dependence and addiction feel like (I've been thru that w/hydro's and benzo's). But it's been a couple of years of this monthly Ambien cycle, and I still have never felt a physical dependence (w/d's) or the need to go drug seeking to get them.
Avatar m tn Addiction is categorzied by maladaptive behavior that is typically out of character for the person, including doing things that are harmful, without any regard for the consequences, in order to get the drug. Addiction includes mental cravings for the meds, where dependency is almost always just physical in nature. It's important for you to determine which category you would fit into, if indeed this is even a concern for you.
Avatar n tn It was given out like aspirin. It is very unfortunate that it became a schedule one drug, with the drug enforcement administration tracking down phjysicians who prescribe it. Valium does degrade situational awareness as well as intellectual acuity, and may interfere with driving safety, although that is more of a problem for the first time user. I have used it (prescribed by a physician) rarely, when under extreme stress, and then only for a day or two, and never became addicted.
Avatar f tn s two kind of drugs, new drugs and old drugs. In 1994 or thereabouts, ambien was a new drug and the pharmaceutical company proclaimed it non-narcotic and non-addicting. When it becomes an old drug, its "OOPS, it is addicting." While not a benzo, it has the same result of messing up your brain's chemistry along with your normal sleep/wake cycle.
Avatar f tn I have been addicted to this drug for many years, and find it really hard to cope with the withdrawals going cold turkey. Im ok until the 3rd day, and then I just seem to fall apart. I thought it may be easier to taper off slowly, by getting the meds from a pharmacy, like they do with the meth program, doing it slowly so it is not such a shock to the system. I am going to the doctor next week to see if this is possible. Can anybody give me advice from their own experiences.
Avatar n tn No, it doesn't have opiates in it. As said, it's a benzo class of drug, which binds to specific sites on the GABA-A gamma-amino-butyric acid receptor, essentially taking over from your normal system by binding to these post synaptic receptors, which causes the pre-synaptic neurons to go dormant, or depopulate from lack of use.
1643958 tn?1301004655 m basically asking if this is a definite drug addiction, even though she is prescribed the pills each month? And also how to get through to her that she needs help?
Avatar f tn I have been on methadone now for about 1 and a half years......for much of this time i was using drugs (Synthetic Heroin) as well.....yes i know that that isnt good...but due to various reasons it was very hard to completely quit.......(FYI I was on the pills alone for only about 7 months when I decided for financial reasons that I had to try to quit or a least cut back a lot)........ Now that two of my closest drug friends are gone.....
877402 tn?1241569071 Physical Dependence and Detox Narcotic addiction leads to real changes in the nerves of the brain. Prescription drug addiction hijacks the circuits that deal with mood and "reward" -- feeling good for helpful behaviors and bad for harmful ones. In addition, long-term prescription drug abuse affects virtually all the systems in the body. Cutting off the supply abruptly leads to opioid withdrawal symptoms.
Avatar f tn This post really has no point except to highlight how crazy and destructive the cycle of addiction is to ourselves and the well being of our families! I still occasionally get calls from people who I believe are part of the internet sales that say "Your Hydrocodone is ready to be refilled" I now tell them, (or my husband tells them when he answers the phone) that I am an addict and I don't want to be contacted by them ever again!
Avatar m tn I do know that this is a principle of breaking the cycle of addiction, regardless of the addiction. People with drug or alcohol addictions must seek association with people not involved with this addiction. People who had once been in trouble as a minor with a bad crowd, must seek new and better associations if they want to break from the trouble they had gotten into as a youth. When you are with people who might only "occasionally" make lewd or dirty sex jokes.
Avatar f tn Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you are ready to break this cycle of addiction. That's the first and most important step. If you are on more than one med, it's best to forumulate a plan with you dr. as to which meds to wean off of and do them one at a time. I, too, was in a bad accident and have chronic pain issues...but eventually, using opiates to deal with my pain issues was not working and I wanted off the merry-go-round.
