Avatar f tn Has anyone here had their dog go through heartworm treatment before? My husky is on day 5 from getting his HW treatment (immeticide?) We're not suppose to have him move around too much because the decomposing worms may cause an embolism. He's coughing a a hacking cough today and not eating too much. I'm wondering what to expect next.... I hear the coughing may continue for 2 weeks before he's almost in the clear.
Avatar f tn I was in Petsmart the other day and I saw heartworm medication, with the label, for vetinary use only. Don't know why they're selling it. But you can purchase it and show it to your Vet.
178590 tn?1294176767 but my female Redbone got heartworms anyways. Heartgaurd payed for her treatment and she is now over them she had the treatment in Sept and Oct 2007 and she was due to come in heat Oct 2007 and never did. Can the treatment cause infertility?
230262 tn?1316645934 After they have the treatment, they still are in danger for a long while and have to be kept quiet for weeks (6 to 8 if i remember correctly-this was many years ago now) because the dead pieces of the worms that break off from the medicine that kills them, can travel in the bloodstream and go into the lungs or brain (much like a blood clot can kill people or give them strokes).
Avatar f tn I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the treatment and after care for a heartworm positive dog. The vet says the treatment has to be done but there is a chance the treatment itself could kill my dog. Any information or experience with this would be appreciated.
Avatar n tn They may allow you to give them postdated checks for the treatment cost, and they may very well let you start the dog on the monthly pill for a few months until you can get the $385 together. Discuss all this with your vet. Be honest. But do not put off getting the dog treatment for long.
603946 tn?1333941839 However, depending on the severity of the kidney failure, it may be better not to give any kind of heartworm treatment. Speak to a specialist or senior vet about this and make sure they are fully informed about your dog's kidney condition. Of course, a dog with heartworm is under a new threat from a different illness, so at some stage you may be forced into choosing the priority - and decide which - any or both conditions - to treat.
1699033 tn?1514113133 They have done doxycycline for quite a while which she is now done with and i just gave her heartguard. It is sad really but half of their rescue dogs are HW positive. I'm not rich, otherwise I would pay for it myself.
Avatar n tn I just gave Atticus hookworm treatment two days ago. We cannot begin heartworm treatement for three weeks. Other than limiting his activity, how do I best care for him? He is not eating much and I have to really work with him to get him to eat. Should I give him a diet higher in protein than usual?
Avatar n tn Two weeks later a large infected rash appeared. I got myself tested for Lyme and it came out negative. I was given a day of Doxycycline and then it was changed to Amoxicillan. I took it for two weeks. The doctor told me to stop the medication and get retested. Two weeks later, I got my positive results. I had, at this point, two weeks on, two weeks off the antibiotics. When I returned to the doctor with positive results, he put me back on Doxycycline for another two weeks.
Avatar f tn Did your vet run a heartworm test by chance? Is max on heartworm prevention every month? Did your vet happen to mention which parts of the heart were enlarged (right, left, generalized cardiomegaly?) Heart murmurs can definitely progress to failure and should be carefully monitored every 6-12 months if the patient is not clinical. They can stay the same grade for the rest of the animal's life as well.
Avatar m tn I was recently diagnosed with NGU and was prescribed doxycycline 100mg bid for 7 days. My physician said to abstain from sex until all the medication was gone. That is exactly what I did. I ended up having sex 4 to 5 hours after I took my last dose of doxycycline on day 7. Did I put my partner at risk by having sex so soon after treatment? Also, I took 13 out of the 14 pills. (I choked one of the pills back up and spit it out). Would that have an impact on the meds efficacy?
1271055 tn?1270584019 I just adopted an adorable little pomeranian mix 4 days ago from K-9 Lifesavers and he is extremely weak and timid. He has very little appetite, which worries me because he is extremely thin. He also has been coughing a little lately, which also concerns me because he has tested positive for heartworm.
Avatar n tn Yes, I believe he did go through heartworm treatment, the previous owner said he had. Yes, he does have heartworm test done regularly and is taking preventive as well. They also checked that again along with lime disease.
Avatar f tn Two patients had a positive TOC following treatment with 1 week of doxycycline, both were found to have a risk of re-infection. There was a significantly higher treatment failure rate in patients receiving azithromycin (p=0.0025). The site claims that a regimen of one week of doxycycline has a success rate of 98.8%. Should I go back to the clinic and ask them for the doxycycline treatment? Or is the information on medscape unreliable?
4876325 tn?1360503479 If he is eating and digesting the food normally I think there is hope. While I don't know what the normal life expectancy for a boxer is, I'd guess more than 19 years. I can't suggest any treatment, but think it best if he is kept dry and warm and not exercised. You didn't say how long the symptoms have existed, if more than a day or two help from a vet is needed, I believe.
Avatar n tn Sure, there are lots of antibiotics. If you're allergic to azithromycin, you also probably can't take clarithromycin and erythromycin. And if doxycycline doesn't work, there's probably no used in taking tetracycline. So that does eliminate a lot of them. If the doxycycline isn't working, either your tests are consistently false positives, or you have a resistant strain. It's not typical, but it does happen.
Avatar m tn He wanted to treat Bongo for both infection and heart. Bongo got 2 injections. One was Tetracycline and the other Lasix. He sent me home with the following: Tetracycline 250mg (1 cap twice a day with meal) & Lasix 20mg (1 tablet twice daily). He recommended bloodwork. Said I could wait til next week and see if the meds do anything. (((After 6 days there had been no change. At this time I started transitioning all dogs to a better healthier food.
441506 tn?1267533765 Hi, I have just purchased some heartworm medicine for my dog. I got it for HALF the price thru a friend who has a friend who works for a vet. It is the real stuff, not a generic, and it is fresh. The only problem is it is for dogs that are twice the size of mine. (instead of ordering extra for me, she just sold me some of what she got for her bigger dog) It would be more than ackward to ask for my money back, so my question is this: Can I cut these in half and give them to my dog?
687729 tn?1397992727 By no means are you throwing your money away on heartworm tests or preventive medicartion. In the early 90's I had three seperate animals diagonised with heartworms with three different outcomes. The first little dog "Benny" became paralyzied, which after numerous x-rays showed no spinal defect.
82861 tn?1333453911 At the time, he was heartworm negative. A year later, he was still heartworm negative. We are religious about keeping both our dogs on Sentinel, so imagine our surprise when Doc tested heartoworm positive a couple weeks ago. Our vet tells us that there is an intermediate stage of development in heartworms that can go undetected by current testing methods. He suspects that the preventive meds kept any new ones from developing and that Doc is harboring one or two worms.
Avatar m tn I was given a shot of Ceftriaxone and a course of Doxycycline 100mg twice daily for 10 days. The symptoms I had were a burning sensation whilst urinating and a constant white/yellow discharge. The doctor I saw at the sexual health clinic has worried me somewhat since she said that the condition is becoming harder to treat due to resistant strains of the infection.
Avatar f tn Just wondering if doxycycline worked for you. I am on doxy 100mg twice a day for 14 days. Still haven’t seen and marked improvement in my rash.
