Common Questions and Answers about Doxycycline and dogs

Avatar f tn The vet tried 4 different antibiotics ( amoxicillin, then rilexine then Zeniquin and last doxycycline) and none have cleared the infection. After the doxycycline in liquid form my dog has been vomiting constantly. He can’t seem to swallow comfortably anymore. Even water seems to be a problem. His breath is very acidic. I tried to give him food through the syringe but he vomits everything, even after water. I gave him subq to keep him hydrated.
Avatar n tn You could always try the prescribed dosage and see how he goes. Sometimes some dogs can tolerate medication quite well, without too many side effects, even though side effects might be expected. Mine does. However, if yours has a history of GI problems, or is a poor eater anyway, or has history of liver, kidney or pancreas problems, you really should discuss this with your vet.
Avatar n tn We then did a CBC and he tested positive for Anaplasmosis. He was immediately started on 50 mg of Doxycycline and given Tramadol for pain (I've added around 150mg of aspirin occasionally for inflammation). After initially improving (dramatically), his symptoms don't seem to be any better. I convinced the vet to give me another two weeks of Doxycycline, as they only gave me a two week supply, but it's been 10 days already and I'm concerned that I'm chasing a wild goose.
Avatar m tn So, here we go. I live in Tennessee. My wife, son and two dogs went hiking about 3 weeks ago near Big South Fork and apparently the dogs and I managed to get quite a few "seed ticks." We didn't know it until my wife saw a few small black "dots" on the dogs. We initially thought it was flea "poop" because we pulled them off the dogs and my wife mashed one- it left a little red streak. We honestly couldn't see legs or antenna or anything.
Avatar f tn I have kept him away from other dogs to avoid getting them sick. The vet diagnosed him with kennel cough and put him on Doxycycline 100 mg - he takes 1 1/2 pills twice a day. He started them on Tuesday. He has also had a Bordetella vaccine. His cough seems to be getting worse instead of better. We cut our walk quite short this morning because he was really coughing and coughing up a lot of phlegm (gray and pale yellow).
Avatar f tn He also had shaking, muscle spasms. She took him to the vet and he was positive for lyme disease. He is on Doxycycline for 30 days, then will retest for the lyme. She said he looks and seems to feel terrible.... vet gave her pain pills for him too. Interesting..... people get brushed off, ..... At least the poor animals who have no voice get treated!! Best wishes and healing to all!
Avatar f tn Antibiotic resistance is not a problem in leptospirosis so ordinary penicillin, tetracycline and erythromycin all work well. Doxycycline is probably the best since it seems most effective in preventing dogs from becoming silent carriers of the disease organism in their kidneys after recovery. Continuing with fluids and supportive care is essential. The numbers will need re checking once the antibiotics are finished, as the drugs will alter blood levels disproportionately.
Avatar f tn Dogs generally loved cooked salmon, and cooked bacon, and liver, (raw or very lightly cooked). You shouldn't have much problem getting your dog to eat these items(!) Also, Walmart carries frozen buffalo patties, (6 per box) in the people section - dogs love that raw, or warmed 30 sec in microwave, (anti-biotic and hormone free). Doxycycline can cause really painful GI problems is used more than a week. Speaking from experience!!!
Avatar f tn Doxycycline nearly always causes nausea in dogs, and often vomiting. However, it is a very effective antibiotic. Has he finished the antibiotic course already? If so, then it would be a good idea if you can feed him some natural "Live" yogurt (unflavoured) daily for a few days until you see any improvement, as this will act as a pro-biotic, replacing natural gut bacteria which will have been wiped out by the long antibiotic course. This will help his digestive balance.
Avatar m tn s still yellowish. What causes his yellow color? and Yes,doxycycline is the antibiotic prescribed by the vet and also liverolin (a syrup from India i guess) to protect his liver. I'm also concern about his kidney, is the kidney disease caused by lepto still reversible? Is it chronic or acute? I failed to ask the vet about this. I just hope he gets better, he's my bestfriend and a very sweet dog too.
Avatar f tn Our 7 year old yellow lab Rocco was recently diagnosed in the last stage of renal failure just a couple weeks ago. I brought him to our regular vet with symptoms of loss of appetite, bad breath & nausea. The vet did a brief exam & said his exam was unremarkable & didn’t feel like a blood work was necessary. Said he looks like a healthy dog. A week later I called the vet back & said I wanted blood work done. On a Friday they performed blood work & urinalysis.
Avatar n tn He has recovered from the poisoning, but nearly immediatley began to limp. He has been returned to the vet, and began antibiotic and painkiller treatments, but has still not improved. Has anyone run into a correlation between poisoning and joint stiffness before? He has been with the family constantly since he came home from the vet, so I know he has not suffered any type injury to cause the joint stiffness. Also one day he favors his left front leg and the next he favors his right.

Avatar f tn Have been on doxycycline for two weeks and there has been no improvement. Gotten worse. She was on steroids for two days and perked up a bit but then the Vet took her off after tick panel results came back because he was afraid the steriods were keeping the antibiotics from working. I have been pumping her legs and rubbing her muscles. There is still no movement in her legs at all. The Vet said to try one more week then maybe start steriods again.
Avatar n tn Doxycycline 100 mgm by mouth twice/day for 6 weeks and then once/day for 3-6 months is a common treatment of blepharitis and meibomian gland disease. It is not so much antibacterial as antiinflammatory and gets into the oild gland. That's the reason its also used for acne. There is a new product that is specific for blepharitis but I don't have the details or brand name. None of these cause floaters.
Avatar m tn instead, i juz told her my prob and she diagnosed me wif oesophagus reflux(side effect of doxycycline) meanin the acid in my stomach traveled up to my esophagus causing irritation and prescibe me wif anacid. i read somewhere that if i were to take doxycycline, i must not take anacid because it will lessen the effectiveness of doxycycline. so, now i'm at a lost again..
Avatar n tn I was just diagnosed with lyme disease and will be taking Doxycycline for 30 days. Can anyone tell me if I must avoid dairy entirely or just avoid it a couple of hours before and after taking this antibiotics? Thanks.
1415174 tn?1453243103 Has anyone had low dose doxycycline (50mg) used for rosacea or used any antibiotic and got severe vertigo 40 minutes after taking it? I had dizzyness then vertigo and my right ear went deaf then I almost fell but my husband caught me and I got nauseated, tired and cold. It only lasted for about 20-30 seconds. I have been sore from almost falling and jerking myself and tired all day.
Avatar m tn either ceftriaxone (Rocephin) or doxycycline would abort incubating syphilis, and the two together guarantees syphilis would be eradicated. I suggest you lay off the internet. You're obviously very anxious about all this, and in that state of mind you will only find information to inflame and prolong your fears. All is well; nothing bad is going to come from this.
Avatar f tn Does it occur when you're breathing? Are you short of breath?
1699033 tn?1514113133 They have done doxycycline for quite a while which she is now done with and i just gave her heartguard. It is sad really but half of their rescue dogs are HW positive. I'm not rich, otherwise I would pay for it myself.
984138 tn?1359813073 I'm not an MD and not medically trained, but to my knowledge, doxycycline would not treat a yeast infection. Doxy is an antibiotic that treats only bacteria (including Lyme), not yeast (which is in the fungus family). In addition, antibiotics wipe out not only 'bad' bacteria but also the 'good' bacteria that protect your body against fungal infections. It may be that the receptionist at the MD's office got things confused. I would check to be sure.
Avatar m tn Hello, Difficulty urinating in males can be due to urinary retention which can be due to enlarged prostate due to benign prostatic hypertrophy (often called BPH) or infection of the prostate( prostatitis), any blockage in the flow of urine like any scar tissue, injury (as in a car wreck or bad fall), blood clots, infection, tumors in the pelvic region, and stones, infection or due to disruption of the delicate and complex system of nerves that connects the urinary tract with the brain and the ne
Avatar n tn see your doctor. and realize that you canNOT treat all STDs and that MDs do NOT have good tests for all STDs. some STDS we just call em when we see them. so they can say "i don't think you have herpes" but then you could have it. unless they do a blood test and for men, then don't have a test for HPV...
Avatar n tn I have been on doxycycline an antibiotic for about 5 days and i seem to be feeling very anxious and panic like. Does anyone know if this can cause these symptoms. I am also on 25mg of zoloft. Thanks for any help you can give me.
Avatar f tn I have horrible acne and was prescribed doxycycline. I take orthrotricyclen, does anyone know if they interfere?
