Avatar m tn He is on Denamarin ¼ tablet for small to mediun dogs, 1 Prednisone tablet 5mg in the morning, ½ 250mg Metronidazole pill in the morning, and ¼ Prilosec in the morning! At night he only gets ¼ Prilosec! He has been holding his own for about a year now. Yesterday he started the head tilt and really stiff walking. He pants and drinks lots of water. He was diagnosed with high liver enzymes. He does also have some mouth/teeth problems but can’t go under the anesthesia to get a dental!
Avatar m tn My dog jumped up on the counter and got my other dogs Med bottle and ate all the pills and chewed the bottle before I saw you. Will this hurt her?mit was a very low dosage of prednisone about 7 days worth.
Avatar m tn There is an excellent thread regarding phenobarbital dosing and side effects in dogs having seizure activity. My family is in a similar situation, our 9 year old coon hound in excellent health had 3 grand mal seizures in less than 24 hrs. We had a basic work up done at the vet after the first seizure which essentially came back normal. We have started her on phenobarb and prednisone, but I am glad I checked out the thread b/c I did not know the medication side effects were so profound...
Avatar f tn I recently had one of my dogs treated for a disc problem in her neck. She was given a decreasing dose of Prednisone to take over 10 days which helped her considerably. Now, my other dog (same size and age) is showing symptoms of the same condition. I want to try the Pred on him but I don't have any left. Instead, I have a large bottle of Prednisolone. If I gave Ruby 40 mg's of PredNISONE, would I now give 40mg of PredNISOLONE? Or would the dose be different?
1523893 tn?1301579774 Last week my neuro put me on a 3 day dose of Prednisone to hopefully offset the flare I was in the middle of. He put me on 3 days of oral pred, quite a huge dose (25 pills per day, each being 50 mg). I took my three days worth of pills hoping I would see a difference, but have yet to feel any better. In fact I am worse and I am wondering if I should see a physician about my symtoms. Weight gain, no energy, facial swelling, horrible fog, painful skin on my neck and shoulders.
Avatar f tn Prednisone is NOT an antibiotic, you can't just go giving any medication without even knowing what you are treating....prednisone use in cats often leads to diabetes. Please describe what's wrong and I will try and help with some suggestions, I know yr only trying to help them but inappropriate use of meds can be fatal...
1580703 tn?1651904887 there is an online researcher video that says prednisone destroys neurons in the hippocampus and shouldn't be given to stroke victims I'm already having brain damage, fog from sleep apnea and 73% O2 at night so I don't know if klonopin and prednisone helps or actually causes brain damage
Avatar n tn Hi there...a lot of veterinarians have issues with long term usage of steroids in dogs or cats. There is the possibility that continued use of prednisone can cause overactive adrenal glands resulting in too much cortisol in the body (this is one of the body's natural steroids). Since steroids suppress the immune system, llike zodiacqueen has mentioned, chronic recurrent infections can occur.
Avatar f tn My MRI showed no fluid aamd progressive stenosis of c4-5.Als after the prednisone I was pou on amoxicillan.Still in alot of pain.Doctor shot prednisone behind ear and into neck area that feels tender.. 608104 tn?1352587153 November 10 2012 Finally realized that,as a 70 year crone with "mild cognitive disordered" older brain, that dosing with prednisone for viral respiratory infection results in mood swings not well stabilized. I then join new clubs excited to meet wonderful people until the side effects wear off. I expected diagnosis of viral infections with treatment with anti-viral medications. I got my Fluzone influenza vaccine last month and.a TDAP booster. TDAP is not covered by Medicare.
262527 tn?1285381659 Part of achieving tissue levels is how fast the med gets into the body. In oral dosing the absorption is slower. Also, the amount of oral Prednisone needed to equal the IV dose is 1200mg. A typical high dose is 60mg to 80mg. There would likely be a great deal of stomach upset. So, all the way around, the oral dose would seem to be a poorer choice for the action that is needed. I, too, am sorry no one got back to you.
82818 tn?1206989814 any subjection on itchy skin for small dogs. I've tried prednisone pills. All kind if shampoo's and after a couples og days she's back to rolling on the carpet and scratching. It just drives her carzy. She is a 5lds yorkie.
3116756 tn?1341922971 m very late to the party. But in case you were still wondering why prednisone can be used in combination with Trilostane here goes. Trilostane (or an alternative treatment lysodren) can in some patients overly suppress cortisol production. The signs of which may include GI upset- anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea- decreased ability to respond to stress and others.
Avatar f tn My 4-pound chi was put on 4 mg/day of prednisone by his neurologist and it's making him a wreck. He's definitely hungry which is ok, but also lethargic, shaking, has insomnia (I swear the dog hasn't slept in 5 days), panting, lying in a funny position with head stretched out in front of him.
Avatar f tn Shampooing once a week with a medicated shampoo helps remove allergens from the skin. Omega Fatty Acids are a great supplement to add to a dogs diet and take some time to kick in but are cheap and safe and help not only with skin health but also with arthritis, cardiovascular health, and the overall immune system. Lastly, antihistamines can be useful is taking the edge off. Managing atopic dermatitis is always a case by case basis so discuss your concerns with your vet and good luck.
2065896 tn?1373685384 Yep, prednisone (long-term) can cause diabetes both in humans and dogs. One of our dogs (a Toy Fox Terrier) was on prednisone for about 8 months due to health problems including allergies, he developed diabetes, and now is on insulin and a low-carbohydrate diet. (I think it's more likely in dogs to cause diabetes, I was on prednisone at high doses from 2-14 years old and I have some long-term side effects that do remain but I don't have diabetes.) Have you tried adjusting her diet?
Avatar n tn I gave him a prednisone this morning ( I usually give it to him in the afternoon) and I am thinking about maybe giving him another one in the afternoon. I really dont know what to do since of course I cannt get intouch with my vet on Sunday.
Avatar f tn Determining a dosage of tramadol for dogs is an exercise in futility. As with people, if the dog has a history of seizures it is important to let your vet know this, and they will likely tell you about alternatives. While the dosage amounts vary from dog to dog, the tramadol dosage for dogs can be put into effect by using the dog’s weight as the determinant. The usual range is .5 - 1.8mg per pound.
Avatar m tn Yes, the panting is not uncommon with Prednisone. This steroid causes some dogs to become less tolerant of higher temperatures, so to help, make sure he has a cool place to rest. The hotter it is, the more uncomfortable he will feel and the more he will pant. It is also worth remembering that until the taper is complete, you would be advised to keep him relatively calm and in a restful state - long walks, running, playing and over exertion will just make things worse.
Avatar n tn I can only imagine the frustration of dealing with a diurectic in a pet, but your veterinarian obviously thought the medication was needed at that dosing level. You can, though, post this question in the Ask A Vet Expert forum and get some opinions from veterinarians across the country. They would be able to help guide you with information you can share with your veterinarian at home and questions that you might ask your veterinarian. Good luck with your sick little one!
