The amount of Zyrtec I was told to give to Akira is only 1/4 of the adult human dosage. This is much smaller than the children's dosage, which is 1/2 of the adult human dosage. I would never ever give medications to Akira without her first seeing her doctor. I do know that no one should ever give Tylenol to their pets. Tylenol is definitely toxic to both dogs and cats. In fact, some of us humans can't even take the stuff.

It has been 2 years since all of that happened. I have been feeling much better on my vitamin D and zyrtec regiment. Perhaps this happened to one of the prior rescue dogs when given benadryl. Antihistamines are helpful to decrease itch in 30-40% of pollen allergic dogs, and sometimes multiple antihistamines have to be tried in order to find the most effective one for each individual dog, so if benadryl is not helping after 1-2 weeks, you can certainly try zyrtec.

So using your formula of 1.4 mgs per lb would mean i should give him 168 mgs once per day. My vet has me giving him 2-300 mg pills twice a day for a total of 1200 mgs. I called and left a message regarding my concern and that he should double check and get back to me ty for your info.
About a month ago my 26 pound almost 4-year old Boston Terrier started having allergy symptoms (runny nose, watery eyes that led to facial irritation, itching, etc). I called the vet and he said it was okay to give him 25mg benadryl twice a day for allergies.

and for about 6 days i experienced shortness of breath,sometimes severe,but it has happened to me before aswell as i am allergic to alot of things like perfume,smell,dust and the most common symptom i have is shortness of breath,,,also it could be because i discontinued zyrtec for a week,,,,as for pain,i sometimes have a slight tingling pain in the left of my chest where the heart is,not in the middle...
She has taken Benadryl ( 75 mg twice a day for a month ), then three Zyrtec a day for 3 to 4 weeks, now she is taking Claritin ( three a day ). No real relief.
She took prednisone for two weeks while taking Zyrtec, and got complete relief. But, the scratching, biting started again as we were weaning her off the prednisone ( when she was down to one tab every other day ).
The next drug we are considering is cyclosporine. I am seeking any one's experience with this treatment.

Hello I agree with deadgamegrll. I would not recommend taking him off the medications without consulting the Vet because abruptly stopping any medications can be detrimental to his health. It does sound like he is on too high of a dosage. I'm sure examination and testing by his Vet will give the information needed to get his dosage regulated properly.
