dosage of topamax for weight loss

My understanding from the drug handout is that it is normally prescribed for migraines, seizures and weight loss. My doc has just increased my dosage to 100mg 3x per day. I have experienced some deterioration in my eyesight however I'm not sure if that's attributed to age (hadn't had my eyes examined in 2 years) or the Topamax which I've been on a lower doze for 6 weeks. Other meds: Lithium, Zoloft, Ativan. Any advise would be welcome.

html There are many success stories of people losing weight on topamax. If you read the side effects, weight loss is one of them. It helps suppress the desire to eat even smoking which I have quit too. I have had all blood tests ran on me. I've been going to my doctor for 10 years. I like how you just jump to conclusions without doing any research. For anyone else who has any experience using this please write.

How are you doing on the Lyrica? I also have fibro. I'm considering Lyrica also but heard of side effects. Weight loss is a struggle with me, even on Topamax - don't want to gain 50 lbs on Lyrica!

I have been on 25mg of topamax for a few weeks for migraines. I decided to stop taking it. Migraines are worse and I can't sleep.how long after I stop taking to topamax until I can take Tylenol PM? My last dose was last night. Thanks!!

I definitely lost weight and I am little to begin with. Recently I went off of Topamax and have gained weight back for sure :( So the weight loss is one of the better side effects LOL. The biggest side effect for me was the hands and feet (and sometimes lips) tingling. Not all the time but especially in the beginning. Numbness too. They weren't bothersome enough for me to stop taking it, though. I hope it works for you.

I know someone who takes it and it can be a side effect. I had asked my rheumatologist to let me try it for fibro due to the side effect of possible weight loss and he hadn't even heard of it. Regardless he won't give me anything not approved for fibro. Luckily I have reduced my Lyrica dosage and am finding my appetitie going down.

I also had this kind of crazy weight loss on Topamax. For me, it turned out to be the combination of the dosage of Topamax and other medications that made the weight loss so severe. I noticed that once I stopped taking Wellbutrin and as my headaches improved I lowered my dose of Topamax, the weight loss eased off and it took about 6 months to get back to my usual weight. Now I am back watching what I eat, instead of eating everything in site and losing weight!

I'm on 100mg of Topamax twice a day. And I am wondering what kind of long term effects this medications can have on someone? I'm only 19, and I take it for daily migraines. I know Benzodiazepine has a bad stomach side effect, and with Topamax, I was wondering if that would happen with taking this high of a dose.

You will find varying opinions on Topamax. Some people think it's absolute poision. There are side effects which can include the numbness/tingling, weight loss (not such a bad one LOL), and some say they experience a "foggy" brain. For me, the side effects weren't bothersome enough to quit. The Topa did seem to help in the beginning (I was taking it for chronic migraine) but after about 2 years, I felt like it wasn't quite doing the job so I recently got off.

Topamax does tend to cause weight loss, but trust me, this is not the way you want to lose weight. Topamax (I was taking it for bipolar) first of all did nothing for my moods. I was back in the hospital a few months after first being prescribed this, along with seroquel and ativan for panic and anxiety. That's not what makes this medicine so undesirable though. With each dose increase, I had numbness in my legs and arms. This could continue for as long as 2 weeks after a dose increase.

Does anyone know of anything besides Topamax or Phetermine for weightloss...I hve tried phetermine but have heard of Topomax and am currently checking into it for weightloss...the side effects seem pretty scary tho...

I have just recently been prescribed Topamax 25mg to aid in weight loss. I take 25mg at bedtime for 7 days then 50mg. How long does it take before i should start seeing a difference in my weight. I have noticed that I do not have headaches since taking this medicine.

I am also hypothyroid and take 200mcg of synthroid, will there be issues taking these two meds together? I read that one of the side effects of topamax is weight loss. This I wouldnt mind as Ive put on weight due to my hypothyroid. But, the biggest thing would not have these headaches. I have almost come to the point where I just have to accept them as part of my life. I really would like this med to work. Info/suggestions/ideas from anyone would be greatly appreciated..

Does any one taking topamax for migraines have the problem of memory loss? Especially word loss when speaking or writing? I know this drug is nicknamed stupamax for a reason. It sure helps to know when you are not alone and others have the same side effects. Topamax helps my migraines and the weight loss is a plus too but the memory is suffering when it comes to writing and speech...like spelling...

Could you be thinking of Topamax, which can have the side effect of weight loss when used for other indications, so is sometimes used for that purpose?

I would ask for an alternative medicine. Topamax causes hair loss which I have experienced first hand. I found out that that is one of the main side effects and wish I hadn't taken it. I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication.

In Nov my TSH level was .44 but due to weight loss she dropped my dosage from 125mcg to 100mcg, retested in 6 weeks, my TSH level was 5.90, so she upped my dosage to 112mcg, but after two weeks on it i requested my dosage be put back to 125mcg and to keep my TSH level at 1.0 or lower. To my astonishment she agreed. I will get retested again in 4 weeks. (I had a TT 14 yrs ago). I get tested everytime I tell them my symptoms.

Now that I have stopped taking Geodon, I would like to know if anyone out there has been through the same experience with weight gain AND if weight loss is a side effect of coming off of Geodon? If not, is it easier to lose weight once you are off of the medication? I have my mind back and now I want my body back! Hope to hear some good news!

Hi...this is not really all that new, and it is the generic of TOPAMAX...this can take 2 weeks to adjust to....so u may feel extremely tired and off balance with this.... I did lose weight, and not sure how it works, but I gained it all back and I am still on the med....so it is not a weight loss miracle. I have noticed a change in taste as well as smells...so I know that did affect what I eat.... Good luck and again be advised most do need an adjustment period to this med.

I have been off Topamax for approx. 8 months and was wondering if I began to take Topamax again would it help with weight loss or once it has leveled off it will no longer aid in weight loss? I currently take Maxalt for headaches only as needed so the Topamax was only used as an anti-seizure med. I hope anyone who uses Topamax for any reason is fully aware of the serious risk of acute narrow angle glaucoma. I had read several articles about it but saw it firsthand last week. As usual on my quiet weekend off I got the dreaded call from the emergency room, again. This time about a woman on Topamax for 7 days who seemed to have lost almost all her vision 12 hours after increasing her dose per her doctor's instructions.

I was on Topamax for a while and I did lose weight. I have not lost weight on anything else, and since they took me off I have gained like 30 lbs over just a few years. I had to go off of Topamax and put on another med because I was high as a kite on it. Almost hallucinating - looking at the ground and seeing what looked like a sinking quicksand hole, etc. And the side effects did not go away over a couple months of trying so I had to go on something else.
