Dosage of azithromycin for gonorrhea

Common Questions and Answers about Dosage of azithromycin for gonorrhea

zithromax

Avatar m tn The doses of azithromycin studies for treatment of chlamydia, NGU, and gonorrhea have been studied when the medication is taken as single doses. Thus, questions about doses taken at lower doses and on different schedules is difficult to answer and require estimation of their effectiveness as opposed to answers based firmly on scientific studies.
Avatar n tn It might be, it does seem a little light but it could clear a STD up if you had it. Best thing is always wait for tests. And I think this is why the Dr went light on the dosage.
Avatar m tn I have just finish the treatment for gonorrhea after finishing the prescribed 5 day dosage of azithromycin. After further reading on azithromycin in the internet, I stumbled upon some people saying including in this forums that taking azithromycin can affect the vdrl for syphilis. I'm starting to get worried. I didn't notice any symptoms of syphilis on me at all. So is it possible that azithromycin can affect the vdrl for syphilis? I hope my doctor knew what he was doing.
Avatar n tn Yeah along with a 7 to 10 day course of Doxy for Chlamydia.
Avatar n tn I went to a urologist and was given an immediate shot for gonorrhea and 1g (2x 500mg) azithromycin initially, with an additional 500mg to be continued each day for 3 days. Given my activity and symptoms it was pretty obvious what it was. The only thing lacking was a discharge. After day 3, the painful urination did not subside at all. I found this very strange since last time I got the gonorrhea shot the painful urination stopped the exact same day.
Avatar n tn current recommendations are you get the shot of ceftriaxone and oral azithromycin at the same time if you test + for gonorrhea. the 2 gm dose of azithromycin alone is only helpful for chlamydia at this point, not gonorrhea. if you were given just oral treatment for gonorrhea, you are supposed to retest any time after 1 week post treatment to see if it was effective or not. why does it fail?
Avatar f tn Hey, Zpack works differently for different illnesses. Years of studies have shown the best treatment for chlamydia is 1g taken at once. That doesn't mean that a higher dosage won’t work, it’s just proven not to be as effective.
Avatar m tn It is now ~1 week later and I have no symptoms. ~4 days later I got tested for chlamydia/gonorrhea. The test came back negative. At the time I also asked the doctor if I should take azithromycin just to be extra sure but the doctor was hesitant to prescribe anything without symptoms and without a positive test. So my questions are as follows: 1) Is ~4 days enough time for a chlamydia/gonorrhea test? 2) Should I get tested again just to be sure?
Avatar n tn 2) What other drug/dosage is commonly prescribed for UTIs? I cannot afford to visit a clinic/doctor right now at all, so telling me to ask my doctor, consult my care provider, etc, though understandable, will be of absolutely no help.
Avatar n tn Dicloxacillin is a poor choice for any STD. It has no effect against chlamydia or the other bacteria that cause cervicitis in women and NGU in men, and borderline efficacy at best against gonorrhea and syphilis. The alternative to doxycycline is azithromycin 1.0 g orally in a single dose, which is safe and effective in pregnancy. If gonorrhea is a concern, then it's azithromycin plus a cephalosporin antibiotic, such cefixime or cefpodoxime; or a 2.0 g dose of azithromycin.
Avatar n tn I am working in a country where medical help is difficult to come by, and women's sexual health is severely underserved. I went to a clinic to be tested for STIs because of a risky encounter I had and some irregularities I noticed. Sure enough, I was diagnosed with both chlamydia and gonorrhea. The doctor prescribed me 1g of azithromycin. From information I've found from independent research, I don't believe this is going to be sufficient to cure the gonorrhea.
Avatar f tn I tested positive for Gonorrhea of the throat today. I’m allergic to Penicillin and Doxy, so my doctor decided that 2 tablets of Azithromycin 500mg totalling to 1000mg was enough. However, online along with my local lgbt center say that I was not fully treated. Is this correct? I’m really stressed and upset, so I don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve already taken the prescribed Azithromycin, and my Doctor asked for me to return for retesting in 10 days.
Avatar m tn You ask good questions, If you have gonorrhea, there certainly is a risk of you then transmitting it to a new partner. There is a risk of gonorrhea transmission for an infected male to an un-infected female is about 20-30% per episode of intercourse. If you have NGU the answer is less clear. NGU in men following receipt of oral sex is thought to arise from the introduction of oral (mouth) bacteria into the urethra during oral sex.
Avatar n tn About 2 weeks after these visits I had mild irritation and on one morning a small amount of white material at the end of my penis. A MD prescribed 2 grams of azithromycin one time for this a week ago. I also have had a previous bout of prostatitis due to Proteus (years ago). My questions are 1. What was my risk of stds (gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV, NGU could happen), 2. Would this medication address the STDs and 3. Do I need a "test of cure"?
Avatar n tn Im female, I tested positive for gonorrhea as well as BV. I received treatment on Dec 16th, I took 2g of azithromycin and started metro for the BV. I'm still having a lot of discharge. If the azithromycin doesnt work, which I dont think it is, I'll have to wait 30 days to get tested again. Im so mad at myself and I feel hopeless. Im terrified of passing it somehow to my kids thru casual contact, Everything I read says a simple kiss could pass it. Im ready to pack my bags and leave home.
Avatar m tn m on the medication, azithromycin dosage is over and 2 tablets left for levofloxacin, and my eye redness has reduced a bit and the burning during urination reduced a bit too but not completely gone. What i want to know is:- 1.Will this antibiotic course be enough to cure my conjunctivitis? 2.Should I be taking antibiotic eye drops as well? 3.should i go see an ophthalmologist? 4.My vision gets a bit blurred at times, but washing with water or blinking a few times fixes it.
Avatar m tn 0 grams (4 500 mg pills) taken at one time is just as effective as penicillin for syphilis treatment however, there are some cases of treatment failures with azithromycin for syphilis treatment and many of the treatment failures have come from San Francisco where you apparently live. Thus this is a matter of concern. While many people will be cured by therapy of early syphilis with azithromycin, the dose you have received is not the recommended dose.
Avatar n tn I was told by the Costa Rican Pharmacy that the 1g of Azithromycin will also clear up gonorrhea... but later read that I need atleast 2g for that! Also, I forgot to mention that the 9 girls were all prostitutes... but I think that was understood. From what I understand, when a condom breaks... its very obvious! I didn't see any visible tears in any of the condoms, and each of the condoms were latex (lubed and non-lubed Trojans). I'm hoping that all is ok.
Avatar f tn I went to get checked and the doctor prescribed 1g of azithromycin. That dosage should be enough for chlamydia, but after research, it seems like i might have gonorrhea since it was only oral. Chlamydia seems rare to be transmitted through oral. I also saw on this site that another user was prescribed cipro 500mg and 1g azithromycin. Dr. Hhhhhh said that should be sufficient. I had extra cipro I my house, so i took 500mg along with the azithromycin.
Avatar n tn It is unlikely any STD is the cause of the spot on your tonsil, but because of the slim chance of gonorrhea and borderline treatment, you could be tested for it. To be maximally safe, also have an HIV test in a few weeks -- but don't lose a lot of sleep about it in the meantime; almost certainly it will be negative.
Avatar m tn Just to clarify, 2 g azithromycin isn't quite "protocol" for gonorrhea treatment at least not in the US. It is sometimes used for gonorrhea, but never as the drug of choice. It is somewhat less effective than the recommended regimens, like cefixime or ceftriaxone. However, it does have the advantage of also being active against chlamydia.
Avatar m tn 2) Would the azithromycin dosage he prescribed remedy NGU if I did have it? If this dosage would not cure NGU, am I able to immediately go to a STD clinic to get tested (while on azithromycin) or do I need to wait for a period after finishing the medicine to get accurately checked and tested? 3) Does alcohol diminish the effect of azithromycin ? I say this because I had 4 drinks one night two days after beginning the medicine. 4) Can NGU be passed to women?
Avatar n tn Furthermore, had you contracted infection, it is most likely that you would have acquired either gonorrhea, chlamydia or NGU and the amount of azithromycin you took should be curative for each of these. Thus, to summarize your situation: 1. This was a no risk exposure. It was condom protected. STDs are not spread through masturbation 2. Even in the off chance that you were infected, the amount of azithromycin you took 2.
Avatar f tn You are also a good candidate for Azithromycin dosage that could easily stem Gonorrhea,Chlymdia and Syphilis early infections.
Avatar m tn If that is indeed the case, then it would seem that the recommended treatment from CDC for gonorrhea (a single shot of ceftriaxone with a single dose of azithromycin) actually would take care of gonorrhea, chlamydia AND syphilis?
