Avatar f tn There is also idiopathic seizures, but these are usually seen in younger dogs.
Avatar m tn No you can't use human toothpaste for dogs. I think there's something in it which is toxic for dogs. The best toothpaste I've found is "Virbac" I think it's made in Germany, and is available where I live in England. It doesn't need rinsing, which so I've heard, some of them do. It contains enzymes which work on plaque bacteria and keep the gums healthy. I don't know if you can get that where you live?
Avatar m tn My 5 year old miniature schnauzer is 5 years old. She has started coughing and is becoming more frequent. It is almost a panting cough? She also has a bad odor. Which has been going on for a month or two.(odor). I have listened to her chest with a stethescope and she is breathing fast and it sounds thick and dry. I thoguht it was maybe just a case of dust because we mulched leaves (oak and pecan) and we didn't have a bag on the mower and it got pretty dusty.
1171933 tn?1263476758 My Chihuahua has severe bouts of Coughing, Wheezing, Choking, & Breathing problems during the night. It seems to be a little bit better in the daytime. I've had him to Vet's, but after spending $1,000 + he has not changed. Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be?
3181540 tn?1344550924 Reasons for Coughing: OK, For starters, you need to rule out Heart Problems....The xray will not only show the heart, but also the lungs...This is important.... With Heart Disease, the weak heart cannot pump as well...Fluid builds into the lungs causing the cough..The cough is usually MOIST like they're choking on congestion...Actually, they are...The cough is worse in the mornings & during periods of running, playing & excitement....Fluid will show in an xray.....
Avatar m tn I think she, herself, has figured out her own method to make the problem less worse on her. When a coughing spell occurs, she desperately tries to find a spot in the house, lays down, and appears like she's trying to calm herself down. And she lays there awhile. Just like in previous times, these cough/hack spells still occur when she's excited, eating dogfood, and waking up from deep sleeps. There hasn't been any signs of a white foamy substance in a very long time.
Avatar f tn Do not go near any other dogs until this problem is resolved. To prevent a relapse make sure your dogs are kept warm. Ask your vet any questions that are worrying you, did you mention kennal cough???that has to be caught from another infected dog who have they been in contact with. I think your vet will change his prognosis, but hey as long as Jersey is getting better that is what counts. Please let me know how you go with Stephie.
Avatar m tn Bongo started having continuous coughing fits about 12 days ago. Coughing seams to be with every breath. It is kind of a low tone soft cough. Coughing get worse/ louder when he is active or excited. It seams to be a non productive cough although he does lick his lips or does like a hard swallow after he stops the coughing. He will stop the coughing almost immediately when I hug him, pet him or talk to him. As soon as I stop the interaction he will start the breathy coughs again.
1416390 tn?1333901604 m sorry to hear about your dogs coughing episodes. My 12 year old lab has been doing this for over a year. The first time I heard her gagging, hacking cough was late one night and I rushed her to the emergency care center. Nothing was found in her throat, but the vet there said her heart and liver were both enlarged. I took her to my regular vet the following Monday. He thought she was fine and said her heart seemed normal. She didn't cough while we were there.....
Avatar n tn My 12 yr. old pug has been coughing for 3 months. I have been to two different vets and together they have ruled out collapsed trachea, kennel cough, pneumonia and heart disease. He has been on several different antibiotics and steriods. He is still eating as usual and the coughing seems to be worse at night. They are not productive coughs just dry hacking coughs. I am running out of ideas and am desperate for answers.
Avatar n tn This is not all that uncommon a problem in small breed dogs. The Vet could prescribe *short* term prednisone. Some put these dogs on antibiotics periodically due to the fact mucus, etc can accumulate in the trachea and cause infection. Some Vets will also prescribe a cough medicine to be given when needed. Aside from that, your friend may try the following................. Try to use a raised feeder. This makes it easier for the dog to eat and swallow.

Avatar f tn This means that even a slight problem with the throat or lungs or gastric tract which ordinarily might not be too big an issue for most dogs, can become a major problem for pugs. I am going to assume she has been vaccinated for kennel cough - if not, she should be - take her to a vet asap. Even if she has been vaccinated, there are strains of the virus that vaccinated dogs can still catch. Has she been near any other dogs recently?
415109 tn?1304890182 We have a 9 yr old Low Chen who for the past 2 weeks has been hacking and coughing almost constantly. He did have valley fever 2 years ago and was treated successfully and his titer is negative. He coughs but doesn't cough anything up-just sounds like he is going to choke or get something out. sometimes rubbing his throat gently and calming him down will make it quit but as soon as you stop he starts again. He is in otherwise good health.
Avatar n tn I would take her to her physician as soon as you are able, it is certainly not healthy for her to keep coughing and vomiting. The coughing will hurt her insides if it is too strong and vomiting will prevent her from getting her much needed nutrients from food, etc. I really am not able to tell you what it is, it could be a number of things, and, as I said, it would be best if she saw a doctor. Please let me know the outcome, I know she must be miserable.
Avatar f tn The coughing is very upsetting since I am sure it is very uncomfortable for him. I have started putting a ecollar on him hoping that if he can't lick then the cough will get better. I bathe him in an oatmeal based shampoo. Running out of ideas and sad for my boy......
Avatar n tn It could be an upper respiratory problem. But did your dogs get it from the stray or did the stray get it from one of your dogs? Either way, I would suggest going back to the vet. Some vets think bordatella (for kennel cough) should be given twice a year, others say only once. In theory they should be immune to bordatella and distemper. Are they nearly ready for their next set of injections? If so, the vaccinations might not be as strong as they were when first given.
1462810 tn?1327360449 I wonder if the enzyme chews and enzyme toothpaste can cause the same problem in all dogs? I really have no idea, but am now a little worred because I use enzyme toothpaste for my dog.
Avatar n tn We found out about the cause when our friends got an air purifier and their dogs all started coughing within a week of them starting to use it, took it out of the house and all the dogs STOPPED coughing. I wish there was a way to get this info out to everybody.

Avatar f tn There are many human foods that are completely unsuitable for dogs, and one of the many reasons why dogs become ill is because of scraps of human food that is given to dogs. While we are not susceptible to these toxins, dogs are, as they have completely different digestive systems. Please take a look at my article on this subject so you don't give these foods by mistake. http://www.infobarrel.
Avatar n tn My dog has been coughing every 2-3 hours as if hes trying to loosen something in his throat. Will it pass?Should I take him to the Vet?
Avatar f tn Because my dog interacts with other dogs a lot, when he developed a "cough" I immediately took him to the vet. He had no fever, is eating and drinking normally and his activity level is normal - he doesn't at all act like a sick dog. I have kept him away from other dogs to avoid getting them sick. The vet diagnosed him with kennel cough and put him on Doxycycline 100 mg - he takes 1 1/2 pills twice a day. He started them on Tuesday. He has also had a Bordetella vaccine.
