Diltiazem vs verapamil

Common Questions and Answers about Diltiazem vs verapamil

Avatar m tn I'm not sure how long you've been on the Verapamil. I was given Diltiazem, also a CCB, for my heart because I couldn't take Verapamil. When I started the Diltiazem I had a non-stop pounding headache for 2 weeks. It gradually eased off and my body adapted to the med. It probably has something to do with the way the medication works to relax the blood vessels a bit.
Avatar f tn Is anyone out there having bouts of extreme nausea and severe constipation while taking Verapamil? Are there alternatives that I can take. Verapamil is prescribed to me for atrial fibrillation along with flecanide.
Avatar n tn It is up to the doctor. I'm not sure why you would take both verapamil and diltiazem since they are both CCB's. I'm going to assume the doctor is prescribing this and you're not just going to find the med and add it yourself. Ask the doctor about how the medications work and why you need both.
1622431 tn?1299070442 m put on beta blockers, that really helps treating PACs that occur with adrenaline. Calcium blockers like diltiazem and verapamil can be effective too, it's a bit trial and error, it all depends on what's causing them. If you have anxiety and somewhat elevated heart rate too, I guess beta blockers are best. The best cure is, however, to accept PACs as the completely benign phenomenon it is.
Avatar m tn I have been on Verapamil for years with no apparent problems, but recently heard it can cause dry eye and cataract. My eyes have been getting bad for quite some time and have been followed by an opthamologist who never said the verapamil could be the culprit. Now I have a cataract, tons of floaters, and other problems. Anyone else experience this and if so what do you suggest?
Avatar f tn i take 240 milligrams of verapamil at nightime does anyone know if this gives you headaches.
Avatar f tn HI,I went back to my cardologist today because of my shortness of breath and chest pain and dizziness,,,he showed me the pictures of my stress test and he explained that the small portion that does not get adequate blood when stressed is not a serious thing,,,,but my heart rate problem,he gave me Verapamil sr to try this time 120 mg i have tried Bystolic and Atenol they made me feel very strange im so afraid this new med will drop my heart rate to much,,,,sometimes at night my heart rate is 86
Avatar m tn I had a very bad reaction to Verapamil but many take it without problems. More recently I was given Diltiazem, still a calcium channel blocker, and other than the usual adjustment period with fatigue and headaches, it was fine. My doctor gave it to me for my tachycardia, not my run of the mill PVC's and PAC's. They're not considered a problem other than the heart hiccup sensation. I average 1-5 a minute.
Avatar f tn There are several other CCB out there, and if your symptoms are much different between the diltiazem and verapamil, perhaps another will work. Good luck.
Avatar f tn hi, i want to ask you that which of the digoxin or verapamil are better for prophylactic treatment of paroxysmal superaventricular tachycardia for sone one who was treatet with intravenous adenosine?
Avatar n tn Each time I stayed in sinus rhythm but the heart rate went up to 126 at the highest, and this was while I was on a calcium channel blocker, diltiazem, started by the internist who caught the rapid heart rate. The cardiologist switched me to verapamil and so far I haven't had any more episodes. I have kept track of my heart rate and BP for the last two months to see if there was a trend and because I'm trained as a scientist and we thrive on data!
Avatar m tn Although I said not to tolerate Verapamil, a doctor gave me another calcium blocker, Diltiazem, when I had atrial fibrillation. When I came home, I had to decrease the daily dose to half and then stop using it totally. Diltiazem made me weak (possibly low BP or pulse) and the rhythm became very variable. Doctors should be careful when prescribing calcium channel blockers. By the way, my pulse pressure (in sinus rhythm) can vary between 14 and 130. What does this mean? Is this normal?
Avatar f tn Cardizem (aka Diltiazem) is a calcium channel blocker, good for high BP, angina and some arrhythmia problems. I take it and it does a decent job of controlling my atrial tachy and chest pains. Also helpful for people with Raynauds. Best thing is to google the name of the medication and you'll find out all kinds of info: how it's used, side effects, etc.
Avatar f tn Treatment for coronary artery spasm is with calcium channel blockers (nifedipine, diltiazem, verapamil, etc) and nitrates (nitroglycerine). Hope this helps, and thanks for sharing. If you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond. Take care, and I wish you well going forward.
706949 tn?1228923298 I just came across and article that says "Adenosine and other AV node blockers should be avoided in atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter with WPW or history of it; this includes adenosine, diltiazem, verapamil, other calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers." And my son is on atenolol for WPW. Should I be concerned?
Avatar m tn However, amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium-channel blocker whose primary effect is more peripherally acting rather (as compared to the non-dihydropyridine CCB, i.e. diltiazem or verapamil, which are more centrally acting). Beta blockers is a proven medication that improves survival in those who have suffered a heart attack, have coronary artery disesase, or heart failure. If there are indications for this, then it is usually a good idea to be on one.
Avatar m tn Hello, last month I saw my cardiologist and he had determined that I have AVNRT. So we finally switched from Atenolol 50mg after 10 years of use, to Propafenone 150mg x2 a day. The Propafenone didn't do much for me, felt every heart beat, every skip and elevated heart rate when doing something as minor as walking from room to room. When on Atenolol it would hide the strong heart beats. Now today I started on Verapamil 240mg SR once a day.
Avatar n tn I was put on Verapamil at first and ended up in ER with chest pain, SOB and general weakness. Now I can take Diltiazem (similar but different) with no trouble. Two medications seem like a lot of drugs to control some atrial tachy. Can you be more specific as to what type of atrial tach you have: PSVT, a-flutter, a-fib? How fast and how long do the episodes last?
Avatar n tn I have been on Diltiazem for over 45 day's. And have tken Verapamil for over 4 years, I just can't believe their is nothing to do for this ever day i have between 10 to 100. Lately it is getting worse I feel like the one that isn't going to stop is going to happen real soon.
343006 tn?1314446471 I've been on boty Verapamil and Bystolic but never together. I went off Verapamil because of the bloating, gas and constipation. Went off the Bystolic cause of the breathing problems it was causing. What is your condition that you need to be on a beta blocker or Calcium channel blocker? I went to anogther Doc who told me verapamil doesn't absorb hence the bloating so he put me on Diltiazem (Cardizem) 24 hour release capsules. Hoping it doesn't cause the intesinal issues.
Avatar m tn I just started taking Diltiazem for my PSVT rapid heart beat. It is a little early to know if it is doing any good, although I had an episode after starting. What has been your experience with this drug as a treatment for PSVT (my blood pressure is normal)? What other drugs worked better for you? [I am a 76 year old male in otherwise good health.
Avatar m tn In these patients, β-blockers or calcium channel blockers (verapamil or diltiazem) can be used to optimize heart rate, leading to inherent improvements in myocyte relaxation and cardiac filling, and possibly a reduction in myocardial ischemia. Beta blockers helps stablize the heart rate and reduces the heart's workload Calcium channel blockers fall into one of two categories.
1704227 tn?1307475144 However, with regards to true coronary vasospasm, traditional management has used calcium channel blockers (amlodipine, diltiazem, verapamil) -- sometimes requiring large dosing regimens for optimal control. The pathogenesis for vasospasm is poorly understood although is thought to involve hyperreactivity of vascular smooth muscles which may be caused from autonomic and endothelial dysfunction.
Avatar f tn Hormones like estrogen (in birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy) and testosterone Blood pressure medicines called calcium channel blockers (such as nifedipine, amlodipine, diltiazem, felodipine, and verapamil) Steroids Antidepressants, including MAO inhibitors (such as phenelzine and tranylcypromine) and tricyclics (such as nortriptyline, desipramine, and amitriptyline) Home Care Elevate your legs above your heart while lying down.
Avatar n tn Calcium channel blockers produce beneficial effects on myocardial oxygen supply and demand and, therefore, are also useful in the prevention of classic exertional angina caused by fixed obstruction. Verapamil and diltiazem possess electrophysiologic effects and have, in addition, proved useful in the treatment of supraventricular dysrhythmias.
