Diltiazem vs atenolol

Common Questions and Answers about Diltiazem vs atenolol

Avatar m tn Atenolol can and often does have an additive affect when taken along with other beta blocking meds. In my case, even though the Atenolol was only 25 mg, it was enough to cause several heart pauses (flatlines) of 3 to 4 second durations detected via an event recorder. Regarding the interaction between Diltiazem and Tambocor, this is from drugs.com: "Using diltiazem together with flecainide can increase the effects of either medication.
182884 tn?1259312906 I can share my own experience with Diltiazem. Back in February I was put on Diltiazem 120 ER (extended release) and only had to take it once a day. Compared to the Verapamil (also a CCB) that I had to try years ago and I ended up in the ER, the Diltiazem was a dream to take. I had some fatigue, was a bit slow mentally. The hardest part was the nasty headaches I got during the first week or so. They would hit a couple hours after I took the pill then go away.
Avatar n tn t get any responses here, but from googling around on the web I came to the conclusion that diltiazem, a calcium channel blocker, would be better for an athlete than atenolol, a beta blocker. So I called the doctor who agreed to change my medication. Yesterday on the treadmill, after having only taken one 25mg dose of atenolol my heart rate only showed a bit over 120 when I was doing a pace for which a 140 should have been called for.
Avatar m tn im currently on atenolol 50mg in the morning 50mg at night for frequent pvcs..my main symptoms are just feel my heart pounding all day and night...i think the atenolol is causing me some side effects and i have and allergies and it might be making it worse and also want to start taking allergy shots but heard its not a good idea while on beta blockers. im looking for a list or names of a few calcium channel blockers that can also help my symptoms so i can talk to my dr about changing my meds..
177337 tn?1310059899 Thanks. That sounds encouraging. Although this would be for pvc's, not tachy or racing heartbeats. I did reaffirm with her that she understood that but she said it should also help with pvc's and pac's. I hope I don't get the headache, but I agree with you. I'd rather have the headache than suffer through a few hours of relentless skips. I do get the occasional PAT, but I take 1/2 of atenolol in the evening for that.
Avatar n tn Hello: I have Heart Disease, High blood pressure, I have been taking Atenolol for about 10years, I also take Vytorin. Now I noticed I have been loosing my hair, I heard both atenolol and vytorin can have this effect on some people. So the doctor is going to change both meds one at a time to see which maybe making me loose my hair, we just changed my atenolol to "Metoprololo suc cer".
706949 tn?1228923298 I just came across and article that says "Adenosine and other AV node blockers should be avoided in atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter with WPW or history of it; this includes adenosine, diltiazem, verapamil, other calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers." And my son is on atenolol for WPW. Should I be concerned?
Avatar m tn So we finally switched from Atenolol 50mg after 10 years of use, to Propafenone 150mg x2 a day. The Propafenone didn't do much for me, felt every heart beat, every skip and elevated heart rate when doing something as minor as walking from room to room. When on Atenolol it would hide the strong heart beats. Now today I started on Verapamil 240mg SR once a day. I'm just curious as to what some people have to say about it?
Avatar m tn I can usually control my PACs/PVCs through diet but when I stray and they flare up, calcium channel blockers (diltiazem) work like a charm. It makes them completely go away until it wears off which is about 24 hours (extended release 240), Just curious if anyone knows why doctors do not prescribe these to more patients for PAC/PVC because they seem to work.
Avatar f tn Problem is, i have asthma that has worsened over the past 6 months so the cardiologist switched me to a CCB called Diltiazem 240mg ER that i started this Thursday. It was horrible..i had real bad dizzy spells that came and went, which i expected, but then intense headaches that would come on in a blink of a eye and then subsided just as fast once i laid down. I could even explain that as an adjustment to the med especially given they lower BP and i do not have high BP.
Avatar f tn Now I am in the UK and I tell a two different pharmacies my problem. I think metropolol and diltiazem should not be combined they are contraindicated and make me feel awful. I had no afib symptoms before these pills. They make me feel worse than I ever felt in my life. Both pharmacists looked up their book on British National Formulary and said one word "asystole" that is what their books told them was the danger of combining these drugs. No American ever dared to tell me this.
Avatar m tn I just started taking Diltiazem for my PSVT rapid heart beat. It is a little early to know if it is doing any good, although I had an episode after starting. What has been your experience with this drug as a treatment for PSVT (my blood pressure is normal)? What other drugs worked better for you? [I am a 76 year old male in otherwise good health.

Avatar m tn he sent me back to my regular doctor who at first put me on metoprolol but I had a bit of chest pain with that drug as well as nightmares. Now he has me on diltiazem but since I've been on that my heart rate has gone back up (the metoprolol was keeping my heart rate down). What do you all think I should do??? This is completely debilitating - I have not worked in 2 weeks. I can't go for walks, can't hang out socially. I feel "off" all the time.
612551 tn?1450022175 1. by taking the same mg atenolol as you did metoprolol you doubled your dosage of effective beta blocker.
1153421 tn?1262132684 THANK YOU FOR THE COMMENTS. IT HELPS TO KNOW PEOPLE CARE AND I AM NOT CRAZY.
Avatar n tn I have frequent episodes of rapid, irregular heart rate. Finally, we caught it on an event monitor and it was diagnosed as Paroxyxmal Atrial Tachycardia. I assume this is the same as PSVT? Due to relocation, change of doctors, etc., I have ended up with three doctors all giving me different advice. They all agree that it is benign, but aggravating. I get lightheaded, cough and feel somewhat "confused" when it happens. Nevertheless, they've assured me it's ok.
Avatar f tn I, too, ruminated over the finality of it all. I was on a boat load of meds (tikyson, diltiazem, atenolol) and they were not doing the trick. I already had a pacer so it did not have to endure that part of the procedure. When I finally made the decision, I was ready to proceed. I am glad I had it done as it has cut down on the recurrent AFib by quite a lot. I feel so much better. Life on a battery is not bad at all. I went to a large teaching hospital 2.5 hrs away for all of my work.
Avatar n tn I feel quite frightened that this whole thing is coming back and the only thing at my disposal to stop it is gone. I had previously tried atenolol without good results. I have an appointment with my doc in a few days, but it'd put my mind at ease to have some reassurance as the day-by-day struggle to stay well continues.
612551 tn?1450022175 Interesting point, Jerry. I take Diltiazem XR as well as atenolol and diovan. I take all three in the morning. It has never been a recurring topic of discussion. I am going into the hospital on Wednesday for a pacer change out, so I will bring it up when I am discharged that afternoon. Your argument makes sense.
Avatar m tn Should I go back to my Doctor and request he put me back on Atenolol? I believe the Atenolol was doing the job. I had a few spikes and most of them were while in a Doctors office. I might add I have been taking the Atenolol since my Heart Surgery in 1996.
Avatar n tn I am on Crestor, Atenolol, Cartia and Digoxin and Synthroid. I had Tachicardia and Atrial Fib. I have symptoms of shortness of breath, a dry cough, extreme fatigue, short term memory loss, extreme joint pain and stiffness, poor balance, weakness at times, vision gets dark at times, neck and throat soreness. I'm going to my doctor because I can't function with these symptoms. Can you tell me which meds can cause this and what other meds I could take. Thank you.
Avatar m tn I've had high BP since early 20s. Never ate salt, excercised to keep weight normal. In early 40s had to start taking medication. For the past 20 years I've taken about 15 different medications from doctor to doctor. Everybody knows the answer but my BP never is 120/80 except right after taking meds. 6 hours later it will be 170/102 an dhigher by the hour. Then when I go back to the dr, he/she says, "Hmmm it's high, we should keep an eye on that.
