Diltiazem beta blocker

Common Questions and Answers about Diltiazem beta blocker

tiazac

Avatar f tn m a female, but I can share my experience switching from a beta blocker to diltiazem. I have been taking beta blockers for 8 years for SVT and afib. I had an episode of afib and was in the hospital is Sept. They took me off the beta blocker and put me on diltiazem. It didn't control my heart rate like the beta blocker. My resting heart rate went from upper 60s to the low 80s. After a few days without my beta blocker, I ended up in the ER, in sinus tachycardia with a rate of about 120.
672586 tn?1280933658 The Metoprolol is a beta bocker and the Diltiazem is a calcium channel blocker, so I would have to wonder why the switch. The beta blocker would improve blood flow, while the calcium channel blocker helps the heart ryhthm and/or heart rate.
Avatar m tn Was put on Metoprolol (beta-blocker) and Xarelto (anticoag), and heartrate still was high, so beta-blocker was doubled to 100mg day (50 am, 50 pm). After about a month, had the cardioversion procedure, which stabilized heartrate. Beta-blocker reduced to 50 mg a day. About a month later, had Echo-cardio test and things had "returned to normal." Because of bad side-effects from Metoprolol, doctor weaned me off it and said I could replace baby aspirin for the Xarelto.
Avatar m tn s so much more with medications, Propranolol, a Beta Blocker, has membrane stabilizing characteristics, and Sotalol, another Beta Blocker, requires closer monitoring due to the more significant effects that it can have on the heart's rhythm.
Avatar m tn I have suffered with taking diltiazem(180 mg ER) AND metoprolol (50 mg ER) for atril fibrillation for the past two and a half years. The side effects have been debilitating.. Both drugs have the same side effects and together and one or the other or both create what I can only describe as chaotic turbulence in my chest and pain in my left arm when the second drug kicks in.. My cardiolgist now wants me to add a blood thinner (xarelto) to my meds menu.
Avatar f tn It seems that the chest pains are less frequent, but I still get the tight in the chest and breathing issues I had on the beta blocker. Do calcium channel blockers cause lung thightness? My BP was still around 130/90 2 weeks into the Diltiazem. We are checking again when I finish the bottle. Meanwhile, lots of aches and flue like sypmtoms. I always feel sick and tired. I sleep 9 hours a night, but wake up with anxiety attacks around midnight. I think I want to try Cozar again.
Avatar f tn back to back? I have been taking a calcium channel blocker-diltyeizem for my tachycardia and high blood pressure and it is not really lowering either. My tachycardia is sometimes 150/60 and I am suppossed to start taking a beta blocker-nadolol 40 mg. My question is: wouldn't the CCB still be in my system while starting the beta blocker? I have been on it over 2 months and will start the beta blocker tomorrow. What can I expect, is that safe? Thanks to anyone who can advise.
Avatar f tn Does anyone know if 14,026 PACs and PATs in 24hrs are dangerous? Sometimes they last for hours. This has been going on for weeks. Toporol beta-blocker didn't work to stop them, the cardiologist wants me to try Cardizem, a calcium-channel blocker. What do you think?
Avatar m tn You would then be taking 220mg of a Beta-Blocker every day. The side effects are not easy to take sometimes, at least in my opinion. I gave up taking it because of those. However, I have been put on Metoprolol ER - 50mg - again four weeks ago and they just don't seem to work. I found out through experimentation years ago that none of the generics worked - it used to be Toprol XL - except when I found them actually made by the original manufacturer and sold as Metoprolol.
Avatar n tn now my heart rate is between 80 and 92 . the last time i was but on a beta blocker and had a very bad reaction just after one tablet dr put me on proprananol heart all over the place so came off 2 days agow hospital changed my medication and put me on another beta blocker. i am back home havent taken it as am scared stiff its bisoprolol 1.
Avatar m tn I had way more energy compared to the beta blocker. The only side effect I had was being unable to drink red wine (gave me a vicious headache). The CCB that I was put on was Cardizem (diltiazem) and this seems to be the one more commonly prescribed for arrhythmias.
Avatar m tn I have been taking a combination of beta blocker (now Atenolol) and Calcium Channel Blocker. They work in different ways to lower my HR. I to not know what Tambocor is and haven't looked it up.
Avatar f tn This drug is also known under the brand name of Coreg...it is a beta blocker used to treat hypertension among other things. How high is your heart rate?
Avatar n tn t get any responses here, but from googling around on the web I came to the conclusion that diltiazem, a calcium channel blocker, would be better for an athlete than atenolol, a beta blocker. So I called the doctor who agreed to change my medication. Yesterday on the treadmill, after having only taken one 25mg dose of atenolol my heart rate only showed a bit over 120 when I was doing a pace for which a 140 should have been called for.
Avatar m tn Your concern is valid in that being on both a calcium channel blocker and a beta blocker can have risks of reducing the heart rate too low or affecting other conducting regions of the heart. However, amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium-channel blocker whose primary effect is more peripherally acting rather (as compared to the non-dihydropyridine CCB, i.e. diltiazem or verapamil, which are more centrally acting).
706949 tn?1228923298 I just came across and article that says "Adenosine and other AV node blockers should be avoided in atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter with WPW or history of it; this includes adenosine, diltiazem, verapamil, other calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers." And my son is on atenolol for WPW. Should I be concerned?
Avatar m tn The doctor has put me on a very low dose of beta blocker as I have had asthma in the past. He said that my pulse may even go slower, I now feel that I will go to sleep one night and my heart will just stop. I hate this feeling I am having for most of the day when relaxing, I am ok when doing anything physical. My heart beat is so slow that when I miss a beat the delay to the next can be 2-3 seconds and this is scary. It is much worse after eating or drinking.
Avatar f tn I will ask my cardiologist for an echo, blood work for electrolytes and for BNP, a chest X-ray, to change to a beta blocker, or add a beta blocker... does anyone have any other suggestions for things to try or ask to be checked or done? I have my follow up appointment on August 30th. I was able to put the monitor back on after 3 days of cortison treatment on my blisters, and I was sent highly sensitive skin electrodes.
Avatar m tn I think you hear the majority of people are on Metoprolol, followed by Atenolol, Propanolol, then Sotalol all beta blockers. Then comes Verapamil, which is a calcium channel blocker like Diltiazem. Perhaps is has something to do with the nature of how a Class IV anti-arrhythmic affects the cardiovascular system. It decreases or slows conduction through theĀ AV node, and reduces the contractility of the heart, so it could be inappropriate in cases of heart failure.
182884 tn?1259312906 t addressing your major concern of angina discomfort, your doctor likely identified the problem to be that adrenaline triggers may not be the cause of your pain. Diltiazem CD is a calcium channel blocker. Calcium is required by your heart muscles to contract. The problem with your type of angina is that your heart muscles that control the size of your coronary arteries constrict involuntarily causing restricted blood flow to the heart muscle.
3086858 tn?1340852861 s impossible to give you a specific recommendation without looking at all your test, but in general it is extremely important to specify what type of tachycardia you have to justify a high dose of Bystolic. A high dose of beta blocker (BB) by itself (e.g. Bystolic) can produce extreme fatigue in some patients. If you have sinus tachycardia it should not be treated with BB.
768044 tn?1294223436 If your neurologist does end up putting you on a blood pressure medication, and it turns out to be a Calcium Channel Blocker instead of a Beta Blocker... let me know! I'd be interested in knowing how it went. It's good that your other doctor is airing on the side of caution when it comes to prescribing things...
