I was on Dilantin for about 30 years and I went to a new doctor because I moved. The first thing he said to me was "we have to get you off of Dilantin" he had taking xrays of my brain and he saw that half of my brain was shrinking. He slowly took me off of Dilantin and put me onto Keppra. Ever since I have been on Keppra things have be better. I still have small seizures but not many and they are under control...........Please get off of Dilantin and onto Keppra.
Well that's very great news. Some of us are on medications that don't cause weight gain and it is much better. But some of us still are and the medications still work and don't cause other problems. For myself, the mood stabilizer I take Clonidine causes weight gain. I bought some chocolates today and I had already eaten dessert. I was going to snack on them anyway but I told myself not to or the weight gain would start so I didn't.
i have been on dilantin for over 25 years . i to have very bad mood swings and i just cant take any stress at all . my neuro is taking me off dilantin slowly. i take 400mg daily . my neuro told me dilantin will cause mood swings and cause me to be irritable and was hard on your body after being on them so long. i have started keppra and dropping 1 dilantin a month . i was told my moods will improve and i will start to think more clearly.

My EEG results also showed everything was normal. My Dr put me on Dilantin for 3 years. I had very few side effects other than weight loss over time.
I recently had another seizure 2 months ago (this was the first time in 11 years). Thankfully I didn't hurt myself this time, but my new medication (Lamictal) does make my throat hurt. Some seizure medications can cause dry mouth and would probably also dry out his throat. Have you tried a humidifier while he's sleeping?
My husband has is dilantin very low and I was wondering if he can increase his medication to 200 mg.I was also wondering why does that keep happening and what is the side effects for the dilantin.
3 and they gave him a loading dose of 500mg. PO of dilantin, and 500mg. IV Dilantin. He is very regimented taking his Dilantin and does not miss doses.
And told him to take 400mgs. today.

if the levels are high, in the toxic range, and then your dose is cut down and your episodes stop, then it could be the dilantin. But non-toxic (normal) dilantin levels to my knowledge do not cause sleep attacks.

Does anyone know what can cause Dilantin levels to be too low after taking correct dosage? My levels have been around 3.2 and I take the correct dosage my doctor prescribed of 400 MG a day. 200 in the morning and 200 at night. My doctor thinks I am not taking my Dilantin and I cannot convince him otherwise!!! I don't know what to do or where to find any information about it. Would appreciate any information, please.
IT SOUNDS VERY POSSIBLE, i SUFFERED with seizures for 20 years every med on the market did not help, Topomax did very little IF anything for me...Keppra with a small dose of dilantin controlled them best....I just had 2 crainiotomies at Mt Sinai to fix the issue very entailed operation something you want as a LAST resort only......See about Vimpat along with the Keppra it is a good drug...issue with dilantin is the long term side effects....causes teeth problems GI issues and a list of others...
Once in the hospital she had another episode as she was talking to a relative who documented the progression (slurred speech, shaking, then loss of control of limbs). The hospital noticed her Dilantin levels were low, and put her on an IV of Dilantin. The next day she seem fine. They discharged her. The hospital never really diagnosed her, but her general doctor said it was a stroke based on high cholesterol, even thought no stroke showed in the MRI.
Is there any research showing a loss of libido for men taking anti-seizure meds for epilepsy? Specifically neurontin or dilantan. If so, are there any treatments or suggested alternatives?

Height is 5 ft and used to weigh around 95lbs, over the past 5 years have experienced weight gain and am now 110lbs. Along with weight gain there has been shortness of breath, decreased energy level, pain in joints and feet. Developed vertigo and Neuro believed it was BPV and have been taking Meclazine as and when needed. Was diagnosed with ovarian cysts last year. Six months ago had a metallic taste in mouth which was unbearable and took Clindamycin for it.
can 20 years on dilantin after one seizure, then a stroke with no speech, cause terrible sideeffects?
My husband was recently diagosed with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer. The neurosurgeon put him on Dilantin "for life." He isn't even going to check blood levels. My husband has not had any seizures. Does this seem appropriate?
