Is there any research showing a loss of libido for men taking anti-seizure meds for epilepsy? Specifically neurontin or dilantan. If so, are there any treatments or suggested alternatives? Tks, concerned wife.

My neurosurgeon has me changing from neurontin to dilantin and I think the dilantin may be helping; my pain level has decreased yesterday and today. I will see him again on July 7 and hopefully I will be able to report a good response to the dilantin. If the drugs do not work then he wants to try injection of glycerol. I will post again after my next visit with my neurosurgeon.

My neurologist just informed me that Osteoporosis and shrinkage of the Cerebellum are very serious side effects for long term users of Dilantin. Does anyone know more about this? I've been taking 500mg of Dilantin for over 30 years since I was a teenager, and now I'm terribly worried. Not one of the neurologists had mentioned anything about this over the years, and now at 46, I've learned that I may have severe osteoporosis.

I suffer from constant pain - pain specialists here have tried injections - burning the nerve, botox and every possible drug - Lyrica, indomethacin, neurontin, dilantin, elavil - opiates make it worse (trileptal was the only one that helped but lowered my sodium to 118 within 48 hours at just 300 mgs a day) 3 neurologists have suggested just living life out on klonopin but i refuse (high gaba covers the pain - ironic - depakote and tomomax make it worse.

The Doctor, at that time, perscribed to me 200 mg of Dilantin (phenytoin sodium) to take each night. I have been able to live a regular life with no pain or muscle stiffness since then. i have been on dilantin for over 25 years . i to have very bad mood swings and i just cant take any stress at all . my neuro is taking me off dilantin slowly. i take 400mg daily . my neuro told me dilantin will cause mood swings and cause me to be irritable and was hard on your body after being on them so long. i have started keppra and dropping 1 dilantin a month . i was told my moods will improve and i will start to think more clearly.

HI...was she checked for hormone levels...the reason I ask is u said once she was pregnant it stopped for a while and the body adjusts and creates diff levels of hormones while pregnant.....so it may be she is lacking something while not pregnant??

3 and they gave him a loading dose of 500mg. PO of dilantin, and 500mg. IV Dilantin. He is very regimented taking his Dilantin and does not miss doses. And told him to take 400mgs. today. I have a call in to our family Dr. and waiting for a return. We were being seen by a Neurologist, but she abruptly cancelled my husbands January appt. and said she was leaving town for a month, and did not refer us to any other Dr. so we saw the family Dr. who is prescribing.

My husband was recently diagosed with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer. The neurosurgeon put him on Dilantin "for life." He isn't even going to check blood levels. My husband has not had any seizures. Does this seem appropriate?

I hope it helps you, more than the Neurontin. I was up to 3,500 mgs a day of Neurontin, when it suddenly stopped working for me. It was good while it lasted though. Now I take Baclofen at night (for nightime leg spasms) and a dose of Klonopin at night to help with Restless Limb Syndrome. (RLS usually runs in family's and as I understand it, gets more pronounced as we age) I tried the Requip but my body apparently does not like the dopamaine in the drug.

From my experience no but people do grow out of it if they are lucky enough our healed from it. I was on Dilantin, Phenobarbital and Lamictal three years ago. My Dr took me off of Dilantin and no more problems. I was on Dilantin over twenty years and i was scared. Does anyone know what can cause Dilantin levels to be too low after taking correct dosage? My levels have been around 3.2 and I take the correct dosage my doctor prescribed of 400 MG a day. 200 in the morning and 200 at night. how was dilantin for you re: side effects and adjusting to it? How old were you when you began dilantin. My daughter is having a hard time with keppra. I've been wondering about adding antidepressents to her regiments if the doctor says it's OK. Very tough to know what to do with our new diagnosis of generalized seizure disorder. She's 20.
