dilantin long term side effects

My neurologist just informed me that Osteoporosis and shrinkage of the Cerebellum are very serious side effects for long term users of Dilantin. Does anyone know more about this? I've been taking 500mg of Dilantin for over 30 years since I was a teenager, and now I'm terribly worried. Not one of the neurologists had mentioned anything about this over the years, and now at 46, I've learned that I may have severe osteoporosis.

I've been taking Dilantin for sleep seizures for 43 years. No problems before, but recently I'm having trouble making any decisions and I'm getting scatter-brained. What are the long-term effects of Dilantin?

I wanted to switch, but nothing else works. Long term effects of Dilantin are not good. At 45 I have osteoporosis, possible shrinkage of the cerebellum, some balance issues (which is controlled by Cerebellum) and experiencing memory loss - we're still trying to figure out if this is stress or side effects of Dilantin. Please speak to your neuro about the long term effects of Dilantin - these are all well known and documented. Hang in there and hope things work out for you. Keep me posted.

Jails, institutions or death are the most common long term side effects I have seen, or the person quits and has a program of recovery. Why do you ask?

hi folks-just looking around for info re long term side effects of treatment and came across you lot ranting away on your keyboards! I successfully completed 6months tx in april 2007 and am now unable to do very much due to the fatigue,pain and confusion I've suffered since. Just wanted to be added to the list of damaged souls. Have lost a lot of friends to this horrible disease so am very glad to have cleared it but at what cost?

issue with dilantin is the long term side effects....causes teeth problems GI issues and a list of others.......best of luck and If I can please let me know I will ghive the advice from my own personal experiences if they seem to meet what you are saying....

I'm not familiar with Tegretol.But as an epileptic,I took Dilantin for 32 yrs~~~way too long! Can't remember all the side effects;but do remember you have to have a CBC every 6 monthes due to the possible risk of leukemia.The main reason the neuro got me off of it was that Dilantin leaks into your body,building up in your organs.Wishing you the best in finding relief from nerve pain!

I have been doing some research into the medication i currently take (dilantin) and it would seem as if i suffer from one of its side-effects. I was wondering if there was an alternative to counteracting this side-effect or is it something i will have to deal with as i take this medication..

I have no symptoms and feel great; I am 54 and wondering if HEP C would kill me or if the treatment could cause long term effects that could ruin my health. The longest living male in my family was my father 86 and had slow progressive dementia the last 10 years.

t possibly cause these side effects (I looked it up only after about the 4th day on it and these are known side effects, but from much higher doses). So I'm wondering if it could be because of my other meds that this small amount is causing side effects? I just feel dumb saying I think it's causing all this when the dose is so small. BUT, I have to take it or I am in pain. So try not to worry so much about the long term effects when you are trying to survive today. RIGHT NOW I HAVE STOPPED TAPERING MYSELF OFF OF ANY OTHER MEDICATION OTHER THAN THIS DILANTIN, BECAUSE I KNOW I CAN HAVE SEIZURES. ARE YOU CERTAIN THIS DILANTIN WOULD NOT CAUSE THESE OTHER SIDE EFFECTS GIVEN WHAT YOU NOW KNOW I HAVE JUST TOLD YOU?

With that low level of Dilantin and already stop Dilantin since 1 month ago, will it still cause any side affect with above symptoms? 2. Given those above set medication to resume for next 3 months, should it be ok or could it cause any other side affect, as we noticed some of above drugs could have others side affects?
