have you been seen by a neurologist yet? are you taking the dilantin and gaba because of these black outs or were you put on them for something else? sorry so many questions....

I suffer from constant pain - pain specialists here have tried injections - burning the nerve, botox and every possible drug - Lyrica, indomethacin, neurontin, dilantin, elavil - opiates make it worse (trileptal was the only one that helped but lowered my sodium to 118 within 48 hours at just 300 mgs a day) 3 neurologists have suggested just living life out on klonopin but i refuse (high gaba covers the pain - ironic - depakote and tomomax make it worse.

i have been on dilantin for over 25 years . i to have very bad mood swings and i just cant take any stress at all . my neuro is taking me off dilantin slowly. i take 400mg daily . my neuro told me dilantin will cause mood swings and cause me to be irritable and was hard on your body after being on them so long. i have started keppra and dropping 1 dilantin a month . i was told my moods will improve and i will start to think more clearly.

can 20 years on dilantin after one seizure, then a stroke with no speech, cause terrible sideeffects?

3 and they gave him a loading dose of 500mg. PO of dilantin, and 500mg. IV Dilantin. He is very regimented taking his Dilantin and does not miss doses. And told him to take 400mgs. today. I have a call in to our family Dr. and waiting for a return. We were being seen by a Neurologist, but she abruptly cancelled my husbands January appt. and said she was leaving town for a month, and did not refer us to any other Dr. so we saw the family Dr. who is prescribing.

My husband was recently diagosed with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer. The neurosurgeon put him on Dilantin "for life." He isn't even going to check blood levels. My husband has not had any seizures. Does this seem appropriate?

From my experience no but people do grow out of it if they are lucky enough our healed from it. I was on Dilantin, Phenobarbital and Lamictal three years ago. My Dr took me off of Dilantin and no more problems. I was on Dilantin over twenty years and i was scared. Let me know what happens because depending on your dosage you would be off of it or almost by now. I wish you the best.

My surgeon has my switching from Gabapentin to Dilantin, by early this week I should be solely on 400 to 500 MG of dilantin per day however it is doubtful if the meds will fully control the pain so then my only real option is an injection which may cause permanent facial numbness. I would like to know if anyone else has had to deal with recurrent trigeminal neuralgia and if so what was your outcome?

I am on 500mg Dilantin daily as a seizure maintenance drug which works fine. I'm also on 100mg topomax daily as a migraine maintenance drug. I've run out of my Dilantin and want to know how many topomax would be the equivalent temporary substitution for Dilantin?

i don't believe anyone has mentionned gaba, yet it is supposed to be a sleeping and calming amino. does anyone know if it helps? i am thinking rls is a brain thing and maybe there is an amino for it.

Probably not -- ativan targets GABA receptors. Don't know how frequently you take ativan. GABA isn't a particularly effective supplement for anxiety. For one thing, it can cause anxiety. For another, and most important, it doesn't cross the blood/brain barrier well. A better way to get GABA is to take taurine, which along with B-6 is what the body uses to make GABA, but since you're taking the ativan, I'd be careful about this.

First, if you're on any drug such as benzos or neurontin that target GABA don't take this. Second, GABA supplements don't usually cross the blood/brain barrier, so they don't usually work. The best way to supplement for GABA, assuming you're not on medication that targets it, is to take the pseudo amino acid taurine and B6, which together with other co-factors make GABA in the body.

Does anyone know what can cause Dilantin levels to be too low after taking correct dosage? My levels have been around 3.2 and I take the correct dosage my doctor prescribed of 400 MG a day. 200 in the morning and 200 at night. My doctor thinks I am not taking my Dilantin and I cannot convince him otherwise!!! I don't know what to do or where to find any information about it. Would appreciate any information, please.

I hate you are experiencing this, as I am on Dilantin as well. Which came first? Your fears or your hives? Think about it, I know nerve problems can cause people to have the hives. Have you been going through some traumatic times or had problems arise? You are in a difficult prediciment with no insurance, so you will have to figure this out on your own.
