Dilantin for bipolar

Common Questions and Answers about Dilantin for bipolar

dilantin

My son is 15. He had his first seizure when he was 6. He was diagnosed with complex partial seizure disorder. I had taken him to a psychiatrist when he was 3 because of his severe temper tantrums. She told me it was because he was delayed in his speech and had a hearing loss. When Ryan had is last EEG in Nov 2002, it was normal. The first normal EEG since he was 6. We started tapering off Tegretol. After a couple of months with less Tegretol, the mood swings and violent behavior started.
it is a anti-seizure drug.....also used for bipolar disorder....dilantin is another anti-seizure drug that is sometimes used for anxiety..it blocks nerve impulses and has a side effect of mild sedation so therefore helps anxiety..
for nerve pain makes me feel high and hypomanic and fuzzy brained in a pleasant way
For treatment of bipolar disorder: Adults not taking valproic acid (e.g., Depakote) and not taking carbamazepine (e.g., Tegretol), phenobarbital (e.g., Luminal), phenytoin (e.g., Dilantin), and/or primidone (e.g., Mysoline)—At first, 25 milligrams (mg) of lamotrigine once a day for two weeks, then a total of 50 each day for two weeks. After this, your doctor may increase the dose gradually if needed. However, the dose is usually not more than 200 mg a day.
Of course I don't know what they heck they're talking about, lol. I actually went to a neuropsychiatrist, for my Bipolar, and upon his examining my info, and MRI's and such, had come to the conclusion that I had epilepsy. He is treating my Bipolar with Depakote, and hoping to help a lot of things, aka: Migraines, Insomnia, Epilepsy, ect, with it. Anyhow, that's my medical "Me", nice to meet you all.
She completed rehab successfully earlier this year, and claims not to be drinking. She is on meds for depression, bipolar, and seizures. My question is, can these meds cause the odor?
He went on and on about it, I should have spoke up but didn't and now I feel guilty for not sticking up for him. THEN the dr. says he wants to do a sleep study on me, mainly because I don't wake up refreshed. I said ok, but don't think I'm going to go through with it. I told him about the tightness in my neck upper and lower and he felt it and told me to go to physical therapy. I asked him if I should continue the dilantin and he said "I guess you should".
Don't know if that's a reaction to the levo, I've been on it for a while now, but I already had hair all over my face. Can't remember the clinical name for it, but it is a rare symptom of thyroid (okay, now everyone tell me it's not rare). That's what one dr down the line somewhere told me anyway. Have you tried dipilitories(sp?)? I can't use them myself, but I know a lot of women who do. You can also get a med from a dermatologist that will make it shorter, finer, and less noticable.
He has been taking Lithium for about 14 months. He took Zyprexa for the past 6 months and has just switched to Seroquel. I have a bit of a an embarrassing question to ask you, but I am concerned about it. Please don't think this is a prank question. I don't want to ask my son's doctor in front of him because I don't want to embarrass him. My son has gained a lot of weight on Zyprexa, which is why we have switched to Seroquel. However, his penis has shrunk. He has noticed this too.
Other drugs such as Keppra are more forgiving but its not for all types of seizures. Depakote can be a replacement for Dilantin for some as can Zonegran. Neurologists can only guess on what drug will work and its up to you to give him/her good feedback. When I was going to grammar school and high school I was taking Dilantin and phenobarbital and most days I was not totally myself. It was hard to sit in class and not sleep.
The family member I know who has cyclothymia (mild bipolar) is considering Lovaza which would be used for their high cholesterol. It is an FDA approved medication specifically approved as an anti-cholesterol agent but is an experimental mood stabilizer so it could work on both disabilities at once.
i have a brother who is bipolar and gets worse and worse because he only tried lithium (and for a very short time and he said he felt like a zombie) he badly needs treatment and is getting worse all the time with lots of grandiosity and insane schemes where each time he loses money. he has sent awful emails to family members about lack of care but he keeps disappearing in US and doesn't keep in touch so he's the one who has isolated himself but he can't see this. good luck with everything.
I found seroquel (quetiapine) really helpful to me for bipolar but I stopped taking it when I found out I was pregnant, just stopped it altogether, and although I was told by my psychiatrist that there shouldn't have been any withdrawals I would totally disagree.
Zofran is in experimental usage for tardive (and was helpful for me) but FDA approved for other purposes. Namenda is used for tardive experimentally as well and Depakoate, Keppra, lithium and Dilantin. Vimpat has been quite effective for me but that's a literal first use in people (before it was only in animal model studies) and it will be documented in a case study. The natural remedy rhodiola if authorized by a neurologist can be helpful as well.
i have been having seizures off and on for several months. i have also been diagnosed w/ bipolar and Asperger's, a form of autism, many, many years ago. cause of ther asperger's i have a history of banging the front of my head. when i first started having them they put me on dilantin but they also said that because of the EEG being normal, the seizures were "all in my head" (or what they could have told me was that i was crazy, as that's sort of a family thing).
We're trying to get her on Medicaid/ She needs treatment for the BPD, she had just gotten into a program at out state Medical School Hospital for BPD and self-mutilators but she is not stable enough to be at home. She needs so much help. She is such a good person somewhere inside all this, and I feel the seizures have somehow triggered something. Oh, she's also had three shock treatments in the last 2 weeks.
Thanks for your comments. I'll post the link to the official glycine study. http://www.schizophrenia.com/research/javitt.htm And mine will go up when its published. Right now its studied as an adjunct for schizophrenia. There have been no studies with it as a primary anti-psychotic so mine will be the first. But this is a glutaminergic agent that is in Phase II FDA study as a primary: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/03/business/03drug.html?
What information can you provide regarding the use of Zopamax for bipolar disorders and/or migraine prophalaxis? My understanding is the drug has only been approved for seizure disorders. Any new trials?
mood disorder, Depakote, bipolar disorder Hi I am writing to let you know that I am takeing depakote for mood swings and it works great. Tell your daughter it will help her. Just take about2 weeks to get in your body. Follow Ups: Re: Depakote-Seizures and Mood Swings? tonya jones 4/18/1999 (1) Depakote-Seizures and Mood Swings?
She also has ADD and anxiety. At this time she is taking Prozac for the depression. Her was discontinued due to problems with her thyroid. That left her with taking only the Prozac and the Tenex. For several months I have been unable to get her to take her medications regularly. She says they make her tired and sleepy. Her mood swings have gotten really bad, so I told her to tell the doctor at her last visit and she did. He took her off the tenex and added Depakote.
I went away to college in Boston and saw a psychiatrist who put me on a low dose of klonopin as well as a battery of SSRI's, tricyclic's, anti-phychotics, and other off the label treatments for anxiety and depression. Every doctor, therapist, and psychiatrist I have seen (around 10 in all) has commented that I truly do have a very high level of anxiety (I have been tested for pheochromocytoma but it only showed high dopamine levels).
I started taking topamax about 6 wks ago and am up to 300 mg. Have lost 8lbs. I am on it for seizures. I was on Dilantin for 25 yrs and my dr. wanted to switch meds and I read topamax can cause weight loss and I had put on 15 lbs to I talked him into letting me go on it but I am having my doubts now. I am feeling really psychotic!! I feel sometimes like I am on extacy or some other mind altering drug...I have total feelings of electric currents running thru my body ...
I have been on meds for bipolar for 7 years and depression meds for 15 years previous. Two months ago I was going in for an eval on my bipolar meds and my internist MD suggested Xanax as a stop-gap to relieve anxiety until I got to the Psych. I take 1/2 mg per day around 10am and have never felt more in control of my anger in the past 50 years. If .5 mg is an overdose, then I will go to my grave with it. I feel better; my wife (third) is still with me and loving "my old self.
I too have struggled with my weight due to all of the anti-depressants I've been on and off, and on again.... but this combination works for me. Each time I increased my dosage I experienced tingling in my hands and a little fatigue but now I take my medication before I go to bed and I feel great during the day. The tingling has also stopped. I've gone from 142lbs to 115lbs without changing my habits. I have less of an appetite now so I make sure I'm eating enough so I don't lose anymore.
i wont have any seizures cus i take lamictal for bipolar... so thats probally why the last ten years i havent had one.... yea this time im sure a big part is the dr... but in texas f is not a controled subtance so he will always get away with it... and i dont use insurance so the pharmicies dont ask questions... now when i lived in pa i didnt get has many but i had at one point about 6 dr giving me 30-60 with 2 or 3 refills...
Also, ativan can be used for seizure control. Yes, people do outgrow some forms of epilepsy. Just because you have bipolar disease does not mean that you also cannot have epilepsy. I hope you get things worked out.
I also have little appetite and have lost 17lbs.Witch is great for me. I am over weight.I am tired more than normal, but i did sleep alot due to migrains.I do have more side effects and stuff, but I wont over load you all at once.I know this sounds like alot, but it has gotten better as time goes on. I have started to level off and become more normal.I dont feel the tingles as much and i have more of an appetite (darn)he he.
I eat about 500g of yogourt per day and drink 2-3 glasses of milk per day. Topamax alone won't make you lose the weight, it will just make it easier for you to do it on your own. I hope this helps you!! Have a great week!!
