Common Questions and Answers about Dilantin dosage range

dilantin

Avatar n tn 3 and they gave him a loading dose of 500mg. PO of dilantin, and 500mg. IV Dilantin. He is very regimented taking his Dilantin and does not miss doses. And told him to take 400mgs. today. I have a call in to our family Dr. and waiting for a return. We were being seen by a Neurologist, but she abruptly cancelled my husbands January appt. and said she was leaving town for a month, and did not refer us to any other Dr. so we saw the family Dr. who is prescribing.
Avatar f tn At my third appointment my neurologist put me on the name brand Dilantin and reduced the dosage to 400 mg. I am finally starting to feel better by degrees. My questions: 1. Could I have become toxic on the generic Dilantin even though I was within range? 2. Some of the information I have looked at on the internet shows ranges as high as 40-50. It was my understanding that a level of 10-20 is preferred. What is correct? 3.
Avatar f tn if the levels are high, in the toxic range, and then your dose is cut down and your episodes stop, then it could be the dilantin. But non-toxic (normal) dilantin levels to my knowledge do not cause sleep attacks. If you are suffering from sleep attacks, one possibility is a sleep disorder. Sleep apnea, which is due to increased resistance in your airway during sleep, can lead to poor ventilation.
1924139 tn?1322798705 From my experience no but people do grow out of it if they are lucky enough our healed from it. I was on Dilantin, Phenobarbital and Lamictal three years ago. My Dr took me off of Dilantin and no more problems. I was on Dilantin over twenty years and i was scared. Let me know what happens because depending on your dosage you would be off of it or almost by now. I wish you the best.
Avatar f tn Does anyone know what can cause Dilantin levels to be too low after taking correct dosage? My levels have been around 3.2 and I take the correct dosage my doctor prescribed of 400 MG a day. 200 in the morning and 200 at night. My doctor thinks I am not taking my Dilantin and I cannot convince him otherwise!!! I don't know what to do or where to find any information about it. Would appreciate any information, please.
1666769 tn?1303248079 blood serum level--at least the medication level will stay within an acceptable range, but dilantin can have many unpleasant side effects, especially at 500mg. Neuroloigsts--better, epileptologists, or neurologists who specialize in epilepsy--know more about this jazz than internists. Dilantin is not prescribed as often as it used to be. SInce it has been around for many years, we have discovered that there are many side effects which are not worth risking.
Avatar f tn I had blood workup 2 weeks ago with my GP and everything was fine except cholesterolwas a little high and she put me on zocor. I have a seizure disorder and take 125 mg Dilantin and my doctor took my synthroid up to 175 mg. For the past few weeks I have been jittery, explosive temper, lightheaded, very foggy and started having horrible palpitations and breathlessness..I am really scared at this point and can't seem to get any answers..I am going to schedule an appointment with a endo.
506273 tn?1260138781 Hi and thank you for your response. To answer your questions, I have been on dilantin since April 1 or 2 , 2008. There is no family history and I'm not sure what kind of seizure I had, I was never told. All they said was it was my full brain and not a specific point so they ruled out a stroke, or brain tumor. I haven't been cutting back on the dilantin I take 300 mgs. a day, which I was told is a low dosage. I don't know because I know nothing about this kind of thing.
Avatar m tn The only person who would know if he can increase his dosage is his doctor. My understanding is that there has to be certain antibodies present in his bloodstream, that can only be seen during a blood test. I know that seizure meds can have negative side effects. You can have memory loss, shakes, but I can't know for sure if that is what he is feeling. I am not a doctor just a person who knows a thing or two about this. Please come back and update us on how he is doing.
501086 tn?1210123831 Was just interested if anyone has had to transition from Dilantin to Lamictal and if they have had any side affects
Avatar m tn I started having seizures when I was 12 yrs. and they put me on dilantin and other meds. they never got under control so good until I went to a new doctor (because I moved) and at that time I was about 38, and the doctor did a MRI and other test. He then said to me the first thing we have to do is get you off of dilantin. He showed me that that pill was eating up half of my brain (it is called cerebellar atrophy). He slowly put me on different levels of Keppra and I haven't been better.
Avatar n tn I'm a 48 yr old black female who began having seizures 7-8 yrs ago. they have increased to about 1 time a week. I'm taking 750 mg of Keppra and Dilantin 100mg 2 x a day.
Avatar f tn Does prednisone effect dilantin and lamictal levels? I've been on dilantin and lamictal for over 5 years for seizures. I'm being tested for autoimmune hepatitis, I just had a liver biopsy. I don't want to take a chance on having a seizure.
988694 tn?1332359479 Yes, I have been tested for D, B12 and A and they are in range, a little low in range, but in range. My ferritin went pretty much up after I started thyroid replacement. I do not think I have been tested for zinc or selenium.
Avatar m tn t find a workable dosage of phenobartibal, you might want to ask your vet about either Dilantin, Valium, potassium bromide, felbamate, or a different type of anti-seizure medicine that can be used in conjunction with potassium bromide and/or phenobarbital together called Zonisamide. Zonisamide is totally unrelated to any of the other anticonvulsants, but, like Keppra, the full extent of its side effects is not yet known so to some vets, it is somewhat controversial to prescribe it.
Avatar f tn Hi, Thank you for your question. In medical terms involuntary muscle contraction called dystonia. This may be affected by nerve impingement, the position of the neck, and is often relieved when you are relaxed. It is difficult to find any specific cause for dystonia, however botox injections may be some help to prevent the contraction from occurring. I would recommend evaluation by a neurologist that may benefit you. I hope you find the information I have provided useful to you.
Avatar m tn From your test results your Free T4 was a bit lower than we normally suggest, which is middle of the range, at minimum. Your Free T3 is even lower in its range, which shows that your body is not converting T4 to T3 very well. Free T3 is the thyroid hormone that correlates best with symptoms. Many members say that symptom relief required Free T4 at the middle of its range, and Free T3 in the upper third of its range, or as necessary to relieve symptoms.
Avatar f tn My neurologist wants me off Dilantin because of bone loss and possible cerebella(sp) can develop - I have been taking Dilantin since I was a teenager - I am now 66 - my level runs around 13 - I take 330mg a day - I also take calcium 1200 with d3, magnesium, and multi vit.
Avatar f tn We all need to find our optimal range and not just a normal range. Shoot for a lower TSH and a higher free t3 (will probably have to have t3 added in to get there) with a mid range freet4 and see how you feel? If your doctor will not check the freet3 level, then find one who will.
Avatar f tn Hi, My boyfriend had his first tonic clonic seizure at 29 years old. It happened at 4:30am. He had no recollection of it, he went to the ER, they gave him a series of blood tests and a cat scan and everything came up normal. He was referred to a neurologist who suggested an MRI and EEG. Unfortunately, he has no med insurance and couldn't get the tests without paying up front. 1 month later he had another one.
Avatar m tn My neurologist just informed me that Osteoporosis and shrinkage of the Cerebellum are very serious side effects for long term users of Dilantin. Does anyone know more about this? I've been taking 500mg of Dilantin for over 30 years since I was a teenager, and now I'm terribly worried. Not one of the neurologists had mentioned anything about this over the years, and now at 46, I've learned that I may have severe osteoporosis.
Avatar n tn Hi, Your blood test report shows a slightly low WBC (White Blood Cell) count of 3.2 (Normal for most laboratories is 4.0 to 11.0) Also, the ANC (Absolute Neutrophil Count) is in the lower range at 1.7. Low counts can transiently be seen in absolutely normal people; in others, it may represent diseased states. Do you have any symptoms like weakness, fever, bleeding? If not, then your doctor may simply choose to repeat the test after a couple of weeks.
Avatar m tn They said she was having seizures based on her low Dilantin levels. The gave her two injections of Dilantin, she seemed fine and they sent her home. Now she seems fine again, although a little weak, dizzy, and tired, but pretty good for having three back to back episodes. We went to a follow up appointment with her general doctor on Monday. He again insisted it was related to her cholesterol.
Avatar f tn Dilantin Withdrawal Symptoms The most significant Dilantin withdrawal symptom is a seizure. Suddenly stopping Dilantin can increase your risk of seizures These seizures can be especially severe and very difficult to control. Anxiety, sleeplessness, feeling cold, anger, seeing dead people in sleep, nausea, little appetite, shakineness are usually not due to the withdrawl of dilantin.Reduce your dose gradually to avoid seizures.
