Common Questions and Answers about Dilantin and teeth

dilantin

My question is this, can a person in my situation, and at my age take Dilantin indefinitely? And could these occurences be a side effect of Dilantin?
I am looking for direction about staying with the dilantin. I have been on and off dilantin since I was 17. I am currectly taking 500 mg daily. I am 45. I feel like a child most of the time as my grown children tire as I pause for words and get confused about what they share with me. I fight depression even though I have everything to be thankful for. I am open for advice.
I took 2 old, and 1 new for about a month, then 2 new and 1 old, and am now on 3 new dilantin 100mg. every day. I have been on this for about 2 weeks, and I have not had any problem at all. I do feel kinda nervous about it, though, and never leave home without my medical card in my wallet. (something I never even had to think about with the old dilantin). How about you? Are you on the new capsules? If so, how are you doing?
He let me know it wouldn't be easy. And he told me that Dilantin is a drug that 'finds it's way' into the organs, bones and teeth, through the blood(which is why leukemia can become a risk;why you're supposed to have CBC every 6 monthes). My teeth & gums were actually ruined as a result. Anyway,I did agree to change meds.It was gradual. You never 'just stop taking' a med! You taper off with the Dilantin while adding the new med.I did have withdrawal symptoms.
I've been on 300 mg Dilantin and 81 mg aspirin for 14 months. (In July 2003 my Dilantin level was 31 - at that time I was also on BP meds - levels came down and Dilantin reduced to 300 mg from 400 mg and I was taken off the BP meds.) In August I had a bout with thrush in the mouth. Now I have developed mouth sores on cheek and under side of tongue. Dentist has ruled out problems with my teeth and feels I am having a reaction to Dilantin and some NSAIDS - Erythema Multiforme.
my neuro is taking me off dilantin slowly. i take 400mg daily . my neuro told me dilantin will cause mood swings and cause me to be irritable and was hard on your body after being on them so long. i have started keppra and dropping 1 dilantin a month . i was told my moods will improve and i will start to think more clearly. my neuro told me dilantin does slow your thinking and leaves you in a fog.
problems are a side affct of dilantin but how can I fight this problem? : : I have only had grand-mal seizures within days of giving birth of my last two : : children and have had no seizures at any other times unless they have been : : of a very mild type and I have had some strange experiences so I'm not sure : : if they were seizures or not. I have an appointment with my doctor on the 30TH : : and since I have no neurologist would greatly value your opion.
Specifically, do you have any feedback on the side-effects of Ruffinamide? I have seen them listed and the are fewer and less severe than Dilantin. What has been your experience? Thank you ion advance for any assistance.
I admit I have been under stress lately and perhaps it has something to do with the nightime grinding of my teeth. I saw a psychiatrist for post partum depression and anxiety. He gave me Xanex 0.25 and Zoloft 50 mg but I have not taken any. I was afraid to up until now. Do you think those meds are allright and is Ibuprofin allright for pain? Again, I thank you.
Have my teeth become grey and decayed because I have to take Dilantin? One year into Dilantin and I have to have four front teeth pulled. Previously healthy. Gums are in good order as I brush them 5x daily.
I realize that my dental insurance is NOT my health insurance.
My neuro's office staff say they have never heared of the connection between Dilantin and tooth decay. But I was able to Google it?
I was prescribed Topamax along with an appetite suppressant (Adipex) for weight loss a bit over a year ago and stopped taking them after two and a half months. I did not lose all of the weight I had wanted to, but most of it. I had gained 55 pounds while on Paxil over the course of two and a half years. By taking a combination of the two medicines, I lost 22 pounds the first month, 10 pounds the second month, and 8 pounds the first half of the third month.
Because I've been taking 600mg dilantin, 30mg valium and up to 150mg morphine a day since this whole thing in 1994 or 95. Cut back to 500 dilantin and 20 valium but that was months and months ago. I unfortunately know all too much about status seizures and except for my parrot Max I live alone. A risky choice but mine. Good neighbors help, make sure I take the meds, stop by a few times a day and what they can, but I wasn't afraid anymore and now I am again and it just really *****.
2) I have sleep apnea, copd, and prediabetic and am taking Dilantin. I am not sure if he is looking at doing a series of xolair or just continuous. I am 62 and weighing 300 lbs, I have a controlled heart murmur. I have been on proair, advair, zyflo cr, for some time. I am just so hesitant...can you advice me?? and the copay is not an issue...

Some medications like dilantin and calcium channel blockers like nifedipine can cause swollen and painful gums. They are more common in smokers, in people with poor dental hygiene, with vitamin deficiencies and are known to be associated with stress. You will need to consult your dentist who will examine you and determine the cause so that appropriate therapy can be initiated. Regards.
My partial seizures took the form of thoughts that spun out beyond my control, like a dream you recognize but don't remember, and lasted half a minute or so. For decades I took anticonvulsants--Dilantin, and when I was ready to get pregnant, phenobarbitol (I know, now a neurologist would advise the opposite switch, away from phenobarb, but luckily I was on a low dose and my kids have been part of a study and there doesn't seem to have been any effect).
I never miss a pill and I account it on generic medication. I felt strange for months and now I am on Dilantin. The feeling of not knowing is difficult to deal with; and we/I are still expected to perform as though nothing is wrong. I had taken a fall (mid 80's) well after going through seizures and had to have a brain operation because of fractures in my skull and two broken blood vesicles. As I said earlier, the symptoms are still there and will get very bad if I let them...
Ever since then i sometimes (about once every few months) experience this odd sensation and it can become a bit worrying and strange. The whole room seems to have a new feeling to it- everything im doing whether it be walking or typing seems to intensify and become louder yet the actions are very exaggerated and almost speed up (only perceived this way). I find it very difficult to explain fully but i'm worried it's some early signs of a neurological condition or something?
Mom told them about some situations that occurred and they put me on regular dilantin, tegretol and 10mg of valium. Sure I still slept alot, but I knew when I was going to sleep. Like the Doctor said you have the weigh the good with the bad. When the meds stops the seizures, she'll come around. I did. I hope this helps!!!.... Your Friend!
Hello, i was diagnosed with strep throat and have been given amoxicillin to take twice a day for ten days. I noticed my gums are receding and making it very painful to eat, brush my teeth, etc. I also have a blister on my bottom lip, which I've never had before so could i possibly have an std? Or is this all caused by the strep and should go away with the antibiotics?
Thank you for commenting about Dilantin and black teeth. I see the neuro next week and I am adamant that he prescribe a different epilepsy med that DOES NOT cause tooth decay. I am already spending 9 thousand dollars to have the black teeth removed and replaced by a removable bridge. No one will give me implants while I am taking "gum destroyer" meds) What epilepsy meds DO NOT ruin teeth? I've been reading about epilepsy meds and some articles actually mention Diazapam.
Since taking Dilantin he says that he always feels like he is in a cloud and his cholesteral and blood sugar have been elevating even though he has lowered his intake of both. Recently I was talking to aquaintance and she was telling me that the same thing had happened to her daughter and the dentist had not called the paramedics but rather her.
Pain killers helped to release pain from right shoulder but left head pain which spread over to my face and upper neck and left jaw ( pain in teeth as if i have taken something very cold/hot) stayed little longer. Then next day on 21st I contacted Ortho specialist for any possibility of joint pain problems.
About 2 years ago she had a seizure during the early morning hours (around 5am) where she bit down on her tongue and had bled throughout her mouth, onto her pillow. I found her breathing heavily because her mouth was closed, and her teeth were clenched shut. I called 911, EMT's arrived and helped her come out of it. She had lost control of her bladder during the episode. While they were trying to get her onto the gurney she became very combative, and could not even recognize me, her son.
The Otolaryngologist says you can't have fluid there - I'm mistaken. Maybe I'm just grinding my teeth and have TMJ. I'm 47 and this would be a new thing if true - not while I am awake. And why would it come on suddenly? Since the spring I also been treated with Aciphex for mild and acute esophagitis, gastritistis, and an antibiotic and fungicide for possible infection/fungus by a gastroentologist.
I was referred to a neurologist and he ordered an EEG, which apparently was abnormal. He prescribed Dilantin. Shortly after I became pregnant and stopped taking the Dilantin. I was a stay at home mom for 4 yrs and never experienced another seizure.
Drugs that we have used for this include anti-seizure medications such as tegretol, trileptal, and dilantin just to name a few. Elavil has helped many of my patients, and you could consider combination therapy with one of the other meds mentioned. GOod luck.
