The neurologist figured the Topamax just was not working and then put him on Keppra. (He was still taking 1 dilantin and weaned off that dilantin just before going on Keppra) I had him wean off the Topamax really slow, much slower than the neurologist wanted at first but neuro. gave us his ok to wean off slow. He also weaned on Keppra at a slow dosage. The Keppra worked ok and then he had a few other seizures, one he actually ended up w/ a compression fracture in his back.

I have researched and spoken with my doctor about it and was told that after taking Dilantin for so long the liver, for the lack of a better way of describing it, builds up a tolerance to the medication and hypermetabolize it. This causes a low level but is often blamed on non-compliance. I guess the solution is to change the medication regimen to something easier on the liver.

I went for my regular physical with my regular doctor and my liver enzymes were up; ast 60 alt 40 alkaline phosphate 128, these wer high last year as well. Is this a pattern in your serum data as well, with fluctuations between normal and elevated. What was the original reason for the ERCP and MRI if the enzymes were ok, pain/jaundice? I assume when you say they are doing another MRI that they will also be doing a MRCP along with it? Sometimes seeing the bile duct system in it's undisturbed (not artificially extended/inflated) state is the key in determining what's wrong.

ALT is made in the liver and it's leakage into the bloodstream indicates cell damage to the liver. AST, however, can also come from damaged muscle and heart.

Look for a cause for them being high. One of the 2 enzymes is also made (and released from) muscle, so may not mean liver problem but if both are elevated, there's probably something going on. Fatty liver is a liver disease all on its own and may be the reason for the elevated enzymes. Also google all of the medications and over the counter drugs that you take. You will be surprised at how the most common things can cause liver damage.

which is tough on the liver...my enzymes were ok and i am very glad.there r other factors that come into play such as genetics, age, alcohol consumption etc....as a rule they do not rise just because u used recently..but it is possible...i would wait a few weeks and have them checked again..just to be on he safe side..

the blood test showed that levels of calcium, magnisium, sodium, and putasium are normal but liver enzymes are elevated - VERY HIGH - i have done ultrasound check and it showed that i have a fatty liver. The doctor's diagnosis was that i have shortage in Vitamin D caused by high liver enzymes which leads to these involuntary movements in my muscles. The question is .. do high liver enzymes affect muscles? and does it really affect levels of vitamin D ?
