276875 tn?1400451578 I have been doing some research into the medication i currently take (dilantin) and it would seem as if i suffer from one of its side-effects. I was wondering if there was an alternative to counteracting this side-effect or is it something i will have to deal with as i take this medication..
Avatar f tn t witness but the symptoms were that of a seizure according to the Doctor who saw him in the hospital (he had a fall at the time and had superficial facial wounds) The doctor put him on dilantin and they did an EEG. Then he was taken off the dilantin because the EEG didn't show anythin g. A month later in the night he had two grand mal seizures and at that time a full workup was done at the hospital.

Avatar f tn Hello Dear, Stopping Dilantin quickly is not recommended. Although Dilantin is not addicting and is not likely to be abused, stopping it too quickly can cause seizures to worsen. Dilantin Withdrawal Symptoms The most significant Dilantin withdrawal symptom is a seizure. Suddenly stopping Dilantin can increase your risk of seizures These seizures can be especially severe and very difficult to control.
Avatar m tn My neurologist just informed me that Osteoporosis and shrinkage of the Cerebellum are very serious side effects for long term users of Dilantin. Does anyone know more about this? I've been taking 500mg of Dilantin for over 30 years since I was a teenager, and now I'm terribly worried. Not one of the neurologists had mentioned anything about this over the years, and now at 46, I've learned that I may have severe osteoporosis.
Avatar m tn My husband has is dilantin very low and I was wondering if he can increase his medication to 200 mg.I was also wondering why does that keep happening and what is the side effects for the dilantin.
Avatar f tn if the levels are high, in the toxic range, and then your dose is cut down and your episodes stop, then it could be the dilantin. But non-toxic (normal) dilantin levels to my knowledge do not cause sleep attacks. If you are suffering from sleep attacks, one possibility is a sleep disorder. Sleep apnea, which is due to increased resistance in your airway during sleep, can lead to poor ventilation.
Avatar f tn my neuro is taking me off dilantin slowly. i take 400mg daily . my neuro told me dilantin will cause mood swings and cause me to be irritable and was hard on your body after being on them so long. i have started keppra and dropping 1 dilantin a month . i was told my moods will improve and i will start to think more clearly. my neuro told me dilantin does slow your thinking and leaves you in a fog.
Avatar m tn It turned out I really did those things. I got up and walked around knocked over a few things and was in like a sort of a trance until i flopped onto my bed. when i woke up i was on my bed rolled over a fell on the floor and didnt have the strengh to get up. Is that a seizure or is that something else? I am going to see my doctor but he only comes to my clinic once a month and my next appointment is not til december. so any help would be helpful. Thanks.
Avatar n tn Acute alcohol consumption increases the availability of phenytoin (Dilantin) and the risk of drug-related side effects. Chronic drinking may decrease phenytoin availability, significantly reducing the patient's protection against epileptic seizures, even during a period of abstinence. Any form of alcohol, even beer is contraindicated for some time when you are weaned off dilantin. Sexual activity is an exertional activity which can cause exertional or sexual headache.
Avatar f tn i just started taking dilantin and im 4 weeks late for my peiod and not pregnant
327385 tn?1378360731 I'm lucky in that on certain days I feel a little "woozy" and know things are not going to go well that day. So I try not to drive or work or do much of anything on those days. I have the mini attacks preceding a grand mal - rolling of eyes and my hands suddenly jerking back from the elbows. I'll also drop things like I've touched something hot, and my mind is usually going at lightspeed.
Avatar m tn They said she was having seizures based on her low Dilantin levels. The gave her two injections of Dilantin, she seemed fine and they sent her home. Now she seems fine again, although a little weak, dizzy, and tired, but pretty good for having three back to back episodes. We went to a follow up appointment with her general doctor on Monday. He again insisted it was related to her cholesterol.
Avatar f tn i started taking dilantin and im late for my period almost 4 weeks.
Avatar n tn I have a TSH of 0.24 and T4 of 1.04. I have been on Dilantin for 30 years. I have been on Thyroid replacement therapy for 18 years with monthly injection of B12. 1060231 tn?1338390135 i recently got out of the hospital because of a dilantin overdose i'm still experiencing tremos and a loss of balance,i still can't think quite as fast before this happened.
2015036 tn?1332997788 My doctor wanted me to start with the Dilantin first, but then I read that bone-thinning and excess facial hair can be the some of the side effects. (So, I'm going with Tegretol.) I had no idea about the risk of leukemia! Are you okay?
Avatar f tn The doc said my ears were clear and to just pinch my nose closed and blow to try and relieve the pressure. I would that and if it doesn't help or it hurts really bad then go in. Doesn't hurt to have your ears checked.
1485372 tn?1359545131 We went to a doctor and was given steroids. He went to 3 doctors and each time given steroids. He has no hearing in that ear. The ear drum is not damaged. Because it was so sudden, they say it must be a virus. Is there no hope of regaining the hearing?
Avatar m tn high and low pitched ringing, aching, stabbing pains, crackling, fullness, internal twitching, pulsatile tinnitus, and episodic hearing loss - usually only for a few seconds at a time. But with this fever spell the vertigo, loss of balance and powerful muscle spasms all made a come back as well. I can tell when the fever is climbing because my face starts feeling warm and flushed.
Avatar m tn i have been suffering from dampened/muffled hearing in my left ear on and off for about 2 years now. sometimes im fine, but when the flare ups occur its miserable. i also find that wheni grab my ear and pull back, my hearing seems to be perfectly fine, however when i let go or leave it alone it dampens. sometimes it gets to where i can basically hear nothing out of it and it feels like just pressure in my ear with the dampened hearing.
Avatar f tn I'm trying to treat hearing loss from antibiotics. how can you know if the hearing loss is autoimmune? can a immunologist help with that?
Avatar m tn In the end, if your hearing loss is permanent, and if there is some residual hearing left, a hearing aid can be worn, to help you hear better, and it will diminish the tinnitus. That said, hearing aids are not a cure for either tinnitus or hearing loss. One more note, I hope they use contrast with the MRI, other wise the MRI will have little diagnostic value.
1253197 tn?1331209110 My hearing loss and tinnitus comes and goes so would a digital hearing aid help? Would be interested in other people's experiences but for me most of the time is feels as if I have water in one ear and as a singer this is very frustrating as I cannot always myself sing properly. Off to see newe MS Consultant on Friday so am looking forward to this and hopefully will discuss DMT.
