Common Questions and Answers about Dilantin and diet

dilantin

my husband recently had a seizure and was hospitalized. during this time he was told that the dilantin level in his blood was very low, thus the reason for the seizure. they have placed him on pills to raise it back up. But we are a lil confused. Is there another name for Dilantin? (I heard its Plasma). also is it something that everyone naturally has in their blood? And what causes the level to be low? Is there anything he can do naturally to keep it up besides taking pills?
i hope i have the name and spelling right. in this article he spoke of using dilantin for people that diddnt respond to normal treatments. well i talked adout this with my doctor and he said he has heard of this treament but has never tried it on a patient but agreed to try this on me and to our surprise it worked fantastic. my current doctor physciatrist has said he has never heard of this or even the drug itself i just want any imformation that i can show him about this.
2 and I take the correct dosage my doctor prescribed of 400 MG a day. 200 in the morning and 200 at night. My doctor thinks I am not taking my Dilantin and I cannot convince him otherwise!!! I don't know what to do or where to find any information about it. Would appreciate any information, please.
I lost 100lbs on the Fen Phen diet, but it's slowly coming back without the medication. I am still on a very low fat diet. B. MRI and Nerve tests completed with diagnosis of two semi herniated discs & three buldging discs. Surgery is not indicated and I would not want it anyway. 1. I seldom experience back pain. 2. Only trouble seems to be when lying down. I have to put the left leg up a bit to flatten the back against the mattress.
Not quite sure which category in which to post. I'm 5'5" & 225lbs. Female and 50 yrs. Work two, full time jobs and play golf. First job is in advertising sales (high stress) 2nd is at home on our large internet store. A. Started out with severe burning, tingling, numbness in upper left thigh. It has gotten worse, of course, with added weight. I lost 100lbs on the Fen Phen diet, but it's slowly coming back without the medication.
I was to change med. and begin to take Limictol ( spelling?) While I was there I was coming off of the Dilantin I had a lot of Chest pains my heart felt sooooo tired and I would palpitate. this was the most uncomfortable thing to me and scary. My Dr. decided they wanted to see what my seizures look like so they decided to keep me until I had one I did have ONE event where I felt light headed and couldn't really respond. It felt a little like the Twilight zone. Later my Dr.
So can medications such as dilantin and steroids, aluminum containing over the couter medications, excess coffee, colas and alcohol.
When I was going to grammar school and high school I was taking Dilantin and phenobarbital and most days I was not totally myself. It was hard to sit in class and not sleep. I found myself drinking coffee to stay awake which of course is not an ideal thing. Today, we have drugs that can do the job and not place us in some walking coma. Children must be given options other than going through life sleep walking.
I have muscle spazms along with the in my arms and legs. Chest pain occasionally. Ive had acid reflux and IBS since i was 16. Taking nexium, and whatever else they can prescribe to help, but mine is cronic so theres not much they can do. I have only had one seizure so far.. My son, age 37 developed aching pain and weakness throughout both legs (calf and thigh, front and back). The pain and weakness began in May of 1997 and appear to be getting worse. The symptoms are constant, varying from moderate to severe. Walking as far as one city block can bring severe aching pain that lasts for several days. He describes the pain as being similar to muscle fatigue after running a long distance.
I was already on Wellbutrin 150 mg twice a day and a diet, by the way,and struggling with depression over my weight. Two years later, I am at 200 mg per day of Topomax, headache free with no change in the flavor that I can apprciate. I am also wearing a size 6 working to a size 4. One caution. If you have anorexic tendencies, as I do, be very careful. I forget to eat, don't want to eat, strive for that smaller size, although everyone tells me that that is enough weight loss.
in the early am hours-sleep apnea?, who knows. I had a hormone panel, Dilantin level and thyroid level done and all levels had plunged below normal. My Dr. had done a Dilantin level due to my claims that increasing my Dilantin helped my panic attacks to become less intense and more infrequent. The last 6 months I have been having trouble with the calves of my legs being shaky and wobbly due to being knotted up.
Have my teeth become grey and decayed because I have to take Dilantin? One year into Dilantin and I have to have four front teeth pulled. Previously healthy. Gums are in good order as I brush them 5x daily.
In addition, I have a seizure condition, controlled, and take Dilantin for it, and Dilantin is also used to treat arrhythmias (not helping me in that aspect). Seizures disorders are also known to cause arrhythmias. I wish I had followed through on my Neurologist's advice to see an Autonomic System specialist.
It causes my throat to hurt and get scratchy. HELP, I FEEL LIKE WRINGING MY OWN NECK and it is driving me and everyone else crazy. OH, and NO ANTI BIOTICS, allergy, nor cold medicines work. HELP. What in the world is going on, is this a plague?
I have used various herbs and other treatments to detoxify and heal the liver. Whether they work and I get results is yet to tell. The current drugs cause of host of other ill effects such as lowered immunity, high blood pressure, thyroid issues, depression and many others. Of course there are other drugs to treat those issues. My head is not in the sand, I am just standing up to Pharma Cartel because there "cure" is worse than the cause.
I have been doing some research into the medication i currently take (dilantin) and it would seem as if i suffer from one of its side-effects. I was wondering if there was an alternative to counteracting this side-effect or is it something i will have to deal with as i take this medication..
I've gained a lot of wait in the past two years, even though my diet and habits haven't changed. I need to take 400 mgs. of Dilantin everyday to control my epilipesy. Is this normal?
Since then my symptoms have been coming and going, but not to the same intensity that they were when I went to the ER. Sometimes I will be fine and then it will just come on slowly and last for a few hours and then fade away. This happens daily if not every other day. It doesn't matter if I'm sitting or standing or being active or inactive, I will just start to feel really dizzy and off balance and then the arm heaviness, and ankle weakness will set in.
My partial seizures took the form of thoughts that spun out beyond my control, like a dream you recognize but don't remember, and lasted half a minute or so. For decades I took anticonvulsants--Dilantin, and when I was ready to get pregnant, phenobarbitol (I know, now a neurologist would advise the opposite switch, away from phenobarb, but luckily I was on a low dose and my kids have been part of a study and there doesn't seem to have been any effect).
I am a 40 year old man that has had grand mal seizures since birth , They are controled by meds. ( dilantin , 100 mg 2 caps two times a day ). When I do have a seizure it is always when I take a bite of bread ,roll, e- muffin . is there a link between the two . Thank - You Jerry Dear Jerry, There are cases of "eating epilepsy " reported in the literature.
My daughter was an epileptic and taking Dilantin to control her seizures. We knew that the next grand mal seizure could be her last(fatal). She was engaged to be married to a man who had severe problems of his own that we were unaware of at that time. He was the basic self-centered control freak and very concerned with "appearances". His "high class" family was pressuring him to drop my daughter because of her epilepsy.
I never miss a pill and I account it on generic medication. I felt strange for months and now I am on Dilantin. The feeling of not knowing is difficult to deal with; and we/I are still expected to perform as though nothing is wrong. I had taken a fall (mid 80's) well after going through seizures and had to have a brain operation because of fractures in my skull and two broken blood vesicles. As I said earlier, the symptoms are still there and will get very bad if I let them...
Ever since then i sometimes (about once every few months) experience this odd sensation and it can become a bit worrying and strange. The whole room seems to have a new feeling to it- everything im doing whether it be walking or typing seems to intensify and become louder yet the actions are very exaggerated and almost speed up (only perceived this way). I find it very difficult to explain fully but i'm worried it's some early signs of a neurological condition or something?
my son has started jerking his complete body ( body jerk duration is 2-5 sec) and his complete body streches and comes backs to normal state after that , all medical reports CT ,EEG ,MRI are normal and we have been advised by the doctor to give him Dilantin ( 2 ml for 3 times in a day ), could you please advise
Hi Folks: I am praying and hoping that someone in this Forum (or another - I will post my "case study" in a few places with the hope of getting an answer or some suggestions) can help me figure out what is wrong with me. To date I have seen at least 13 (THIRTEEN) doctors and none of them can give me a solid diagnosis - and meanwhile, I am still symptomatic of SOMETHING, and don't know what to do. So here's the facts. Current Medical Status: 1.
If they do they are morally and professionally inept and I would run from them if that is their attitude. Sure, they can help you with diet changes, etc, and having seen a Naturopath for a few years, I can tell you it was very beneficial for me. Not perfect, let me state, but helpful. If your thryoid is that badly damaged and causing you grief, it may be time to find a new medical doctor and get a second opinion. Cheers PS I also agree with LazyMoose...

We eat all organic and his diet is really healthy, etc. and he has gone to karate and is now in acting class so he has outlets. I don't want to put him on meds because I know firsthand what they can do. As a child I had epilepsy and had to take Dilantin; fortunately, I outgrew it but I know how it puts you in a fog. Any thoughts are welcome.
