Avatar n tn Hi, with HOCM pulmonary hypertension can result from diastolic dysfunction. If HOCM has been treated the incidence of pulmonary hypertension is usually less. And pulmonary hypertension can be due to other causes also. It may indicate a poorer prognosis, but this depends on the clinical symptoms and others cardiac factors. Regards.
Avatar m tn Hi quinncol just want you to know you are not alone. I was dx with HOCM back in 1985 got my first ICD implanted in 1991. I have been in diastolic heart failure for a good many years now. If you want to talk just drop me a email in this site.
Avatar m tn My 12 year old brother has experienced 3 episodes of syncope, 2 of them happened 3 years ago and the last happened today. He was doing fine all through this time interval. the symptoms he had in these 3 episodes in addition to fainting are dizziness, nausea and 'chest pain' (according to him... i cudn't make sure if he had a real pain or just tightness) and this concerns me the most. What cud be the cause? HOCM? Long QT syndrome? cud it be just vasovagal attack?
Avatar m tn As you already known HOCM is a progressive disease process which ultimately may lead to surgery in those who are symptomatic despite being on therapy or those can't tolerate the meds. You seem to fall into both of these cathetegories. There is another medication called dysopyramide which is slightly better than the calcium channel blocker you are on, but its side-effect profile isn't any better.
Avatar m tn If you have a true diagnosis of HCM and are having symptoms, you should seek out a cardiologist who specializes in this for further work-up. While beta blockers are indicated in HCM, this may not adequately control your symptoms (as it seems) and there are other therapeutic options including other medications in addition to surgical treatments. Regardless, you should have a complete and thorough work-up which might include a stress test (echocardiogram) and/or MRI.
Avatar f tn Diastolic blood pressure significantly decreased and systolic blood pressure significantly increased during overnight sleep in the digoxin phase .Heart rate decreased in the overnight sleeping phase . Digoxin significantly decreases diastolic blood pressure during overnight sleep in patients with congestive heart failure. This effect is likely to be caused by reduction of sympathetic activity or increase of parasympathetic activity.
Avatar n tn The link below your post goes to a doctor's explanation where he states digoxin is used to treat irregular heartbeats. I was on digoxin for a few months following my congested heart failue event. It is my understanding the medication is used to increase contractility of the pumping chambers. My medication for stablizing heart rate is a beta blocker (coreg) and an ACE inhibitor. My research: "Digoxin is contraindicated in patients with ventricular fibrillation.
Avatar n tn I took Digoxin for a number of years in reponse to an atrial fibrillation event. My new physician did not feel I needed to be on it any longer. What are the side effects of discontinuing this medication? I have been off it for several months and some odd changes in my body.
Avatar n tn I dont know sorry. People can die of HOCM rarely. Its one of the leading causes of death in young athletes. And I cant give advice with such grave scenarios involved. My best advice I guess is to seek out, find referrals to the best HOCM experts in the country. Be it at Cleveland Clinic or Mayo clinic or, well where your research and referral asking gets you. Find an answer, dont risk it!
Avatar n tn This type of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy may be called hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). The obstruction causes intra-chamber pressure that can further deform the heart. Untreated there can be heart failure, and/or arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats).
Avatar m tn First, the O in HOCM means obstructive. In other words, the septum is so thick that blood flow from the left ventricle is obstructed, which is a dangerous condition, but it can be seen on echo. If your doctor didn't mention it, you probably don't have it. It usually happens with septum thickness >2 cm.
Avatar f tn A comparison of verapamil, propranolol and digoxin showed equivalent efficacy in a small group of patients. However, in general calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers are preferred to digoxin. Digoxin has been around for a long time! I used Digoxin over 50 years ago for my PSVT, and my recollection was that it did little to prevent episodes. There are so many newer drugs now that are far more effective.
Avatar f tn Digoxin and Toprol act in different ways and do not induce the same effects. I have atrial fib and was prescribed amioderone.
967168 tn?1477584489 I found out through a new EP on June 3rd and the hospital last week for a head/neck injury, that my original EP back in 2009 diagnosed me with HOCM but never told me. I knew it was a possibility but he was so focused on ARVD I put it out of my mind and never thought to ask about it again. The dr at the hospital told me I should follow up with Mayo clinic as the EP suggested, so I put in a call to get an appointment and genetic testing.
Avatar m tn How does hyperthyroidism affect the heart, and what cardiovascular changes happen if a cat with HOCM goes from hyperthyroid to euthyroid? For instance, how are systemic vascular resistance, blood volume, stroke volume, cardiac output, etc affected. I am wondering if an HOCM heart relies on a hyperdynamic state from hyperthyroidism, and if going euthyroid will harm the cat.
Avatar n tn marylou7, The diagnosis of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy depends upon many different features seen on echocardiograms. In the majority of cases of HOCM, the septum is thicker than 1.4 cm. With that said, there are variants of HOCM that do not have significant septal thickening yet still have gradients (or obstruction) in the LV outflow tract.
Avatar n tn my dad was taken off of it because his rate dropped below 60 beats and was causing him to be knocked out for most of the day when he went off of it his symptoms improved now its been 2 weeks and he is showing signs of loss of appitite, sleepiness, slow in speech, stomach acid, nasea Can the digoxin be retintroduced without any big adjustment to his chemistry?
Avatar f tn He converted while in the ER and was told to take it in addition to his beta blocker. They had given him a pretty large dose of it while in the ER and he took 3 doses of the pill...he started feeling pretty bad. He went to his regular cardiologist today and he ran a blood test to check for toxicity and took him off of it. It sounds like a very nasty drug...thanks for the info. I can't understand why he was put on it.
Avatar m tn Recent visits to the Cardiologist found him to suggest my condition as benign and highly unlikely it will develop further. I have been asked to do a speech at a monstor wedding of 350 people in the coming months. I quiver at speaking to 20 people let alone 350 so I have been suggested Beta blockers as a relief pre speech to calm blood pressure and lower my heart rate. I've read they greatly assist musicians perform.
Avatar f tn i hev a question concerning digoxin....wat is its effect in the body. I mean its pharmacokinetic effects. i am having a hard time searching the net for it...
