Digoxin and calcium channel blockers

Common Questions and Answers about Digoxin and calcium channel blockers

Avatar f tn The Heart Rhythm Society did a few randomized trials to assess the efficacy of calcium channel blockers, beta-blockers and digoxin in SVT. A comparison of verapamil, propranolol and digoxin showed equivalent efficacy in a small group of patients. However, in general calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers are preferred to digoxin. Digoxin has been around for a long time! I used Digoxin over 50 years ago for my PSVT, and my recollection was that it did little to prevent episodes.
4703993 tn?1379768388 So he just prescriped me Digoxin - which he said he normally does not give to his patients with POTS and/or IST, but since I cant use beta blockers or calcium channel blockers, he wanted to give the Digoxin a try.... Anyways has anyone tried Digoxin and if so what were your experiences?
Avatar f tn Digoxin has been around for centuries. I took it over 50 years ago when my SVT first surfaced. I think of it as like the "Bromo Seltzer" of heart medications. I believe that although it doesn't affect the arrhythmia, it slows the rate down which give more diastolic filling time and consequently better pumping ability. Although it's common use is for Afib and Aflutter, beta and calcium channel blockers are the more modern medicine of choice.
378273 tn?1262097621 t stay down with beta-blockers AND calcium channel blockers- not until there was ALSO sodium channel blockers... Beta blockers are the most common and about the easiest to deal with, but different things work for different people at least better than some things. Good luck. Is this a regular "sinus" rhythm or is it connected to a.fib?
681148 tn?1437661591 Hi FurballsMom! I have tried two Calcium Channel Blockers (actually, I am currently still taking one). The first Calcium Channel Blocker that my neurologist tried with me was Sibelium (Flunarizine), and it worked SO WELL. My migraines completely stopped! Unfortunately, it made me so tired that I could barely get out of bed (this is because they slow you down, since they slow your heart rate down so much). After about a month, I also got extremely depressed and suicidal.
Avatar f tn I am using 2.5mg of Amlodipine (Calcium Channel Blocker) and 5mg of Bisoprolol(Beta Blocker) to treat my hypertension. I noticed when I took a calcium supplement that I felt real "hyper" and had heart races at night. I stopped the supplements but now I get the same reaction if I drink a large glass of milk. I also have side affects of reaccuring vivid nightmares. I have an upcoming physical, my doctor does not believe me.
768044 tn?1294223436 Hi Tracy! I hope the Calcium Channel Blockers work for you! I don't think the Beta Blocker is working for me either at this point (we were both on the same one) ... so, maybe I will talk to my neurologist about the possibility of trying a Calcium Channel Blocker for me too. That's good to know though about the Calcium Channel Blockers lowering blood pressure...
4356842 tn?1353312209 Like Tom said, there are many beta blockers and calcium channel blockers to try. If it were me I would ask to be taken off Digoxin. I still get svt attacks but most are just very brief bursts (like 10-15 beats) every once in a while. I haven't had a full blown svt attack for years. So try another beta blocker or calcium channel blocker and if they still don't work, then ablation. I was your age when I started the Atenolol and 1/4 of the 25mg is all I needed.
Avatar f tn I am not allowed to increase the dose. Calcium channel blockers and many betablockers are not suitable for me. Someone suggested Digoxin to me, but hyperparathyroidism prevents its use. I don't know how to treat my abnormal rhythm.
Avatar m tn Some people have serious problems with the side effects of beta blockers on their libido. You may want to discuss changing to a Calcium Channel Blocker. The general advice is to not stop taking BB (or any medication) until you discuss with your doctor.
Avatar m tn What do you take Calcium channel blockers for? Does your Calcium channel blocker consistently slow your heart down? I have an always fast heart, (daytime resting pulse in the mid 80's). During excercise, my pulse goes high quickly, and does not come down to a normal rythm in a normal timeframe. I am hoping Calcium channel blockers will slow my heart down, but I have read that a side effect of the medication actually can speed it up.
Avatar f tn Would it be possible to have verapamil (or calcium channel blockers) added to the migraine/headache tracker? Thank you!
920737 tn?1250348210 I would like to know if there are some good alternatives to calcium channel blockers. Brief background - MI in 1998 followed by stent placement. Multiple hospitalizations since for angina. Had three more stents placed (RCA, LAD, circumflex). Rotoblator procedure done. Bypass (5 grafts) done 1/09. Two grafts failed and another stent place in bypassed RCA 7/09. Was switched from lisinopril to amlodipine. Began Plavix.
Avatar n tn The other side of this is that calcium channel blockers work on smooth muscle function, and the heart itself is smooth muscle. The calcium channel blockers will work in a similar way to beta blockers, keeping the heart more relaxed. This again depends on the dosage as to how much effect it has. There are a few theories as to why spasm occurs, one being that the build up of fats inside the lining can cause it.
Avatar m tn I can't take beta blockers or channel blockers or digoxin and hypersensitivity to other drugs. Electrocardiologist says the condition is rare, one in a thousand. I suspect it may be higher. The worst side-effect for me was memory loss. Someone asked my daughter's last name, and I didn't know. I have afib and tachycardia, so I'm scheduled for an ablation..
Avatar f tn I am scheduler for a stress test and echocardiogram soon. In the mean time my cardiologist wants to start me on calcium channel blockers and nitroglycerine. What, other than coronary artery disease, might be causing this EKG abnormality? And what would happen if a hypotensive patient takes calcium channel blockers and nitro? My normal BP runs between 94/64 to 118/78 with occassional diastolic elevation when under stress.
976897 tn?1379167602 s my understanding that these do. Do a google search on calcium channel blockers and dental decay. It brings up a lot of info on this subject. Sorry about the dental problems.
Avatar n tn Hello, Medications for lowering blood pressure which can be used in kidney failure are angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor since they protect your kidneys and lower the risk of heart disease. Other medications which can be used are beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, diuretics. It is best to report any side effects from your medicine to your doctor and never stop taking any of your medications on your own.
183222 tn?1375334552 The medication choices are usually a beta blocker or calcium channel blocker. I could not tolerate beta blockers. Was switched to Calcium Channel Blockers but they stopped working. I'm athletic and my SVT's were almost always brought on by exercise. Therefore, they made a very negative impact on my quality of life. For me, having an ablation was the best thing I could have done. That being said, some people have a good response to meds.
4356842 tn?1353312209 I have no personal experience with SVT, but I have years of experience with Propafenone, Rythmol, Metoprolol, and a Calcium Channel blockers. All of them, will also lower your blood pressure and that can be a problem, but I have found as long as I keep the Beta Blocker at or below 100 mg a day my BP is normal, to low normal. I do, however, believe the BB causes me some fatigue and lack of energy.
Avatar m tn Not sure if Calcium Channel blockers would be any different, one mechanism suggested is that Beta Blockers slow the heart to the point that the irritated focus of the PVC fires at a faster rate than hearts normal pacemaker, or at least has the opportunity to.
Avatar m tn do calcium channel blockers have less side effects then beta blockers or are they safer?..
Avatar f tn I had this problem, but the vasospasm was caused by a cath procedure. The Cardiologist put me onto calcium channel blockers which stopped the spasms and after a few weeks he took me off the medication. I've been fine since then. They had to do this because I can't tolerate nitrates.
