Nodules more likely to be cancerous are solid, have irregular borders, are vascular (lots of blood flow within them), and have calcifications. Nodules over 1 cm can be biopsied with an FNA biopsy, they take cells out with a needle and view them under a microscope. If they are causing problems, i.e., swallowing difficulties or hoarseness, they can be removed, but they have to take the lobe of the thyroid containing the nodule with it.

it also says IT IS NOTED THAT THE THYROID GLAD IS RATHER DIFFUSELY HETEROGENEOUS CONTAINING TINY NODULES AND REPRESENTING A MULTI NODULAR THYROID GLAND. i had an in depth thyroid function tsh and other numbers all normal.the test was for hashimotos the only thing that showed up on a non fasting test was my sugar was low and told to eat more. what does this mean, what type of test am i headed for? I am sick of doctors to be honest.
Both lobes of the thyroid glands are enlarged with a diffusely heterogeneous echo texture. In the right lobe, two solid nodules are identified, the larger is in the mid-to-lower pole measuring 8.7 mm, the smaller is in the mid-pole measuring 4.7 mm. There is a 6.6 mm hypechoic nodule in the mid-to-upper pole. There is a dominant solid nodule in the lower pole of the left lobe measuring up to 2.8 cm in greatest dimension. There is a hypoechoic 3.8 mm nodule in the mid pole.

Measures 4.7x1.6x1.1cm. with a 5mm cyst and 6mm hypoechoic nodule.
Left Lobe: Measures 4.6x2.2x.1.7cm with a 3mm. cyst at the upper pole with multiple small hypoechoic nodules ranging in size from 4 to 11 mm. as well as a 4mm. complex cyst.
The TSH and Thyroid Antibodies are reportedly normal.
s been acting up since I had my son six months ago. Last Jan 2008 I had a CT scan with no abnormalities in the thyroid. My TSH levels were normal throughout my pregnancy and also normal at my post-natal check-up. I just had blood drawn two months ago which also came back normal. Two weeks ago, I switched my PCP and she ran TSH and it came back 99.570. She doubled my synthroid and it went down to 48.9 and also scheduled me for an ultrasound.
Both lobes and isthmus are midly enlarged with diffusely heterogeneous echotexture. The right lobe of the thyroid measure 5.8 x 1.6 x 1.5 cm and demonstates a solid nodule measuring 0.5 x 0.3 cm in the lower pole. The left lobe of the thyroid measures 5 x 1.1 x 1.8 cm and demonstates a complex nodule measuring 0.7 x 0.6 x 0.7cm in the mid pole. The isthmus measures 5 mm.
Now i have to get a scan. What does this mean?
Enlarged, diffusely heterogeneous thyroid, compatible with goiter and
can be seen with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, other inflammatory or
autoimmune thyroiditis. No discrete nodule identified. Correlation
with nuclear medicine thyroid scan may be of value for further
evaluation.
FINDINGS:
Right thyroid lobe: Measures 7.6 cm x 2.9 cm x 3.4 cm. Heterogeneous
in echogenicity. No discrete nodules identified.
Left thyroid lobe: Measures 5.7 cm x 3.2 cm x 4.1 cm. Heterogeneous in
echogenicity.
The Thyroid gland is enlarged with the right lobe measuring 4.8 cm in length, the left thyroid lobe measuring 4.6 cm in length, and the isthmus measuring 6mm in thickness. The thyroid parenchyma is diffusely heterogeneous. Within the thyroid parenchyma, a discrete nodule or cyst is not detected. Immediately inferior to the lower pole of the left thyroid lobe. There is a 15mm circumscribed nodule which appears to exhibit a plane of seperation from the lower pole of the left thyroid lobe.
ISTHMUS-- There is a nodule in the right side of the isthmus measuring 7 x 6 x 2

I have had an ultrasound of my thyroid. My thyroid echotexture is diffusely heterogeneous. Four discrete nodules were identified, two in the right lobe and two in the feft.
Right : mid pole 2.1 cm in width by 1.5 vm in dept, complex, lobular but circumscribed, diffusely vasular with evidence of calcification.
Lower pole, solid, circumscribed, iso to hyoechoic, peripherally vasular, noncalicified, peripheral hypoechoic halo 1.4 yo 1.0 cm.
Left.. upper pole, .9 to .8 cm.
The isthmus measures 3mm in diameter. There are no cysts or masses within either lobe of the thyroid. Impression - Diffusely slightly enlarged thyroid gland but no nodules.
Test: Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies; <10 IU/mL (<35)
Are there any other tests that should be ordered? Should another ultrasound be conducted to follow-up on the mass in the left gland? Any other ideas?
A year ago I also had a thyroid ultrasound that showed no nodules. At that my time my RAUI showed a diffusely overactive and enlarged thyroid with no hot or cold spots.
My endocrinologist palpated my neck at my most recent office visit and said she could feel something new, after months of palpating my neck and expressing satisfaction that my goiter was shrinking. She did another US in her office and said I have a nodule where none existed before, <1 cm.
Relative homegenous echotexture throughout the remainder of the right thyroid lobe as well as diffusely throughout the left thyroid lobe. Isthumus is not thickened.
Left thyroid lobe overall measures 1.5x3.6x1.6cm. Right thyroid lobe overall measures 1.9x3.6x3 cm.
Conclusion:
Two hypoechoic nodules within the right thyroid lobe. Consider percutaneous aspiration biopsy as clinically indicated for further evaluation pending functional status evaluation.
What does this mean?
I had an appointment with the endocrinologist Monday. Thyroid was enlarged. He did an ultrasound which showed multiply nodules on the right side that were at the need to monitor stage and one on the left side that had a reading of 1.6 cm. He said he needed to do a needle biopsy on the 1.6 cm which is schedule for today. He did indicate that there is only a 5% chance of malignancy. He believes I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.
Both the thyroid lobes are enlarged and studded with multiple nodules and diffuse heterogenous pattern.
Bilateral multinodular goitre noted."
Please let me know whether these nodules are nonmalignant or malignant. Whether further
test like thoroid scan is required.
