difference between venlafaxine and effexor

Hi, I switched from Effexor XR to Venlafaxine ER (extended release) - this is available in the generic form. I live in switzerland though so maybe it isn't available in the UK yet as this was only available to me at the beginning of 2009 when the patent was up. I had the same problems with both Effexor and Venlafaxine so my psychiatrist added Wellbutrin extended release and this eased the symptoms significantly as I was also feeling depressed and suicidal.

I am now wondering what the next step is for me. What is the difference between Effexor XL and Venlafaxine. How do I reduce from 37.5mg Venlafaxine? My doctor does not know the answer to this. She said it will have to be trial and error. Any comments that will help please?

This 2nd doctor looked it up, and said there was little difference in the cost, and would I like to go back on Effexor XL? I said yes. That was a year ago, and I am still on 150mg Effexor XL. I feel really well. All my anxieties and panics have gone, along with the depression. I know not everybody gets the same benefit as me from Effexor. I also do not know if there is much difference in the original, and the generic form. I may have felt just as well on the generic.

One doctor told me there was hardly any difference in the price, and wondered why I had been prescribed the generic and not the brand named Effexor. I therefore went back on Effexor, and I certainly noticed the difference. A lot of people have said the generic is not the same as the brand name. We should know, it is our body. Having said that, I am now off the medication.

The problem is, I now take the extended release Effexor and the supposed generic for this med is $70 more than the brand name Effexor ER. How could a generic subsitute be more expensive than the brand name, just doesn't make any sense to me. If I chose to take the non-extended release generic Venlafaxine, it would be $80 cheaper than the Effexor ER. I couldn't seem to get any answers about this from Express Scripts. I have never heard of a generic med costing more than the brand name.

Yes and No. Venlafaxine is the active chemical in Effexor XR, But notice the "XR" Short for Extended Release. Generic Venlafaxine has no time release properties, but there is now a Generic Extended Release formula of Venlafaxine now on the market. I used to take Effexor XR in the past. I know many people still on it and they report that they had a much better response to the name brand Effexor XR than with the Geneic Effexor XR.

my mother (77yrs.of age) has been taking 10mg lexapro for general depression and body aches. Today, the physician said he wanted to give her something that would make her feel more "perky" and changed her script to 150mg Effexor. The instructions are to take 1 pill/day and to stop the lexapro. From my reading it seems that these meds should be weaned.

I'd check w/ your doc and OB. I was on Lexapro and went off but I was also on a smaller dose (5 mg). I've read many different opinions but mostly I've read that during the first trimester it is best to be off. My OB reinforced that if I had any depression whatsoever that there are many safe meds to take. For me, I've been fine going off and have felt fine and am actually glad I'm off! Good luck!

i have been using effexor xr for 6 or 7 years and now that i in menopause i have gained some unwanted weight and i read that wellbutrin or zyban will help with the weight issure....would this be an ok trade???

Trust me, all the name brand antidepressant meds are just as expensive. The active ingredient in Effexor is Venlafaxine, which is avalible in a Generic, but it is not in the XR form. The XR is short for "extended release." Only the Effexor has this time release form of Venlafaxine delivery. I have found this time release form to be much more effective than the generic Venlafaxine which has no such delivery system.

Hi, Venlafaxine hydrochloride is Viepax. Viepax is the generic form of Effexor. I take 150mg Effexor at breakfast, and it releases during the day. When I was given Viepax, I did not find it as effextive as Effexor, and asked to be put back on Effexor. Feel much better now. You are taking a lot of Venlafaxine over a day, unlike some, who take a daily dose. Perhaps there was a reason for this in your case. There are XP versions, and XL versions. The difference is in the release time.

In early May I started to taper down to 75 and in June 37.5. I have been completely off for 45 days. Recently the fog and memory have gotten better, but I also started to taper my caffeine down by half in that same time so what made the difference is unknown to me. In my case, I think caffeine dependence compounds my matters greatly. I decided to go off the med rather than go up to 225.

I tried Pristiq in an attempt to help with menopausal symptoms. I was (and am) on Effexor XR, and Pristiq is almost identical to Effexor XR. I think the only difference is in their molecules. I was told b y other doctor there is little difference in the price of Viepax and Effexor, so money not the reason. I don't know if you are in USA or another country. I am in UK, and I will stay on 150mg Effexor now.

So this doctor told you that the only other two medications like Effexor was Welbutrin and another? I'm sorry but I must call BS on that doctor because Welbutrin is totally different from Effexor. Welbutrin isn't even a close relative to Effexor. It works in a MUCH different way and on a MUCH different neurotransmitter. Since this doctor can not find you a viable alternative (Probably because of lack of experience) then tell him to prescribe you generic Venlafaxine.
