Common Questions and Answers about Difference between prilosec and omeprazole

prilosec

Avatar f tn I take omeprazole and it works wonderful!! and its generic so not that expensive at all. I used to take protonix and it worked just as well as the omeprazole.. good luck!
Avatar n tn Besides the cost, is their truly a difference between Nexim and Prilosec. The active components in Nexium are esomprazole magnesium and in Prilosec are Omeprazole Magnesium. Also, Nexium comes in 20 mg and 40 mg capsules and Prilosec is sold over the counter in 20 mg tablets. My GI switched me to Nexium because Aciphex gave me terrible side effects and Protonix made my water brash symptoms ever worse. I have tried Prilosec in the past and it didn't have much of an effect for me.
Avatar n tn Omeprozole is not a narcotic pain killer. It is a heartburn med that isn't much different than over the counter Prilosec. I've never heard of it being administered via I.V. Omeprazole does nothing except preventing heartburn.
Avatar m tn From what i've read, prilosec (omeprazole) may lower cholesterol levels by inhibiting the amounts of cholesterol producing enzymes. How long should you stop taking this drug? Maybe a few months to see a difference perhaps. When acid blockers were introduced onto the market, it was recommended not be taken for more than 6 weeks. A very good reason for that! Not to mention insufficient stomach acid is by far a more common cause of acid reflux.
Avatar m tn my doctor put me on prilosec. Instead of prescription strength prilosec i am taking omeprazole 20 mg over the counter since it is very cheep. but even after almost 5 weeks of medication my gerd symptoms - heart burn, burping, regurgitation - have not subsided any significantly. My doctor asked me be patient and use the drug for 12 to 24 weeks to become symptom-free. My question is that does taking omeprazole otc instead of prescription prilose make any difference in efficacy of the medication.
Avatar m tn If you are taking a PPI such as prilosec or the generic omeprazole, peopl ehave reported the high BP as a side effect. I took 40mg omeprazole for 3 weeks and it elevated my BP.

1364792 tn?1278051187 AstraZeneca markets omeprazole as Losec, Antra, Gastroloc, Mopral, Omepral, and Prilosec. Omeprazole is marketed as Zegerid by Santarus, Prilosec OTC. The side affects mentioned in the above post can happen after long term use.......the absorption issues can become an issue and u should take ur meds at alternate times to avoid one cancelling out the others...so take ur Gerd meds in the AM and ur supplements at night....
Avatar n tn It seems that extended use is supposedly not harmful to the body. I take a 20mg tablet daily and I can function fully and eat and drink absolutely anything as long as I have had the capsule. I soon know about it if I forget to take it! That seldom happens I assure you. My question is: I have at least one bowel movement daily - usually after I get up in the morning. My stools are always loose and certainly smell very bad (so my wife assures me!).
709686 tn?1277432159 Esomeprazole (Nexium) is slightly different than omeprazole (Prilosec). But your body could react the same way. You could try a small amount and see. There are some combo otc drugs by Rolaids and others that have an antacid and famotidine (acid reducer). Those probably don't work as well.
1210142 tn?1266077031 Actually there are studies showing zero interraction between Prilosec and Plavix also so it is very difficult to see what this is. Thank you though and please keep me posted.
1296528 tn?1272524830 what the heck, i'll chime in: regarding these "prilosec" type meds, i've been on/off them for years. diagnosed with acid reflux, dysphagia and the like for years. like many here, been awakened at nite "choking to death" feeling. is it demyelinating disease/MS related? don't know. but i finally was diagnosed with that too. i've had acid reflux, dysphagia issues many years prior to taking gabapentin or any such meds.
Avatar n tn When my acid reflux is at its worse my food feels like it is "getting stuck". Prilosec or omeprazole is what I take. It took it about 2 months to work, but that feeling went away. My doctor said it was because my esophagus was inflamed and irritated. (Had a scope when it first happened. - I didn't have the need to have my esophagus dilated - You need the scope to rule this out.) It takes prilosec about 2 months to heal my esophagus when it gets that way.
581954 tn?1223391496 Is it possible for this to be a side effect from Omeprazole? And how long does it take to get out of your system? I have heard it could take 3 months and I have heard it won't take longer than a week??
Avatar f tn I have been taking Omeprazole (Prilosec) since year 2000. I am concerned about calcium absorption and bone loss and would like to wean from it. Is bone loss a legitimate concern? My last bone density showed osteopenia. This discussion is related to <a href='/posts/show/1247834'>Weaning Off Prilosec</a>.
Avatar n tn It is easy to find information regarding drug-drug interactions for omeprazole (Prilosec) and atorvastatin (Lipitor). The omeprazole appears to increase the bioavailability of the statin, increasing the risk of side effects. Does this mean that the interaction is like taking a higher dose of the statin, which would provide benefit for someone like me who only takes a low dose (10mg atorvastatin daily) and has no statin tolerance issues?
690060 tn?1247841741 Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has new data showing that omeprazole (Prilosec/Prilosec OTC)—a medicine used to reduce stomach acid—reduces the anti-blood clotting effect of clopidogrel (Plavix) by almost half when these two medicines are taken by the same patient." "...Patients using clopidogrel should consult with their healthcare provider if they are currently taking or considering taking omeprazole, including Prilosec OTC" but then, there's also this: http://www.
979080 tn?1323433639 still prefer lower VL and it does not just flactuate on it`s own. if we do not know what causes it to flacuate than that is something else.
142841 tn?1201975052 d call the Pharmacy and reread the directions that come with the script. Solvadi and the Prilosec type inhibitors counter act each other.
Avatar f tn I've had occassional PVC's for 20 plus years. I also have Mitral Valve Prolaps. About 2 months ago I started taking Prilosec for reflux. I then began to have a huge increase in the number of PVC's. Sometimes lasting all day. I've been on an event monitor for the past 2 weeks. I didn't even think that to relate this increase in PVC's to the Prilosec until about a week ago.
Avatar n tn Allegra, Prilosec and Flovent (one puff a day.) I have not taken the Allegra for two days to see if this would help the dryness, but it has not. I do have an infection under a tooth where I had a root canal a few years ago. I finished the antibiotic for the infection about a week and a half ago and still have a slight swelling around the site of the infection. Also, it is dry where I live due to the furnace running, and I have been using a humidifier.
